As an old pop culture friend goes, two others return
Currently I find myself in the midst of a bittersweet blend of pop culture and emotions. Next month I will join my friends in the theater as we embark on another mission with agent 007 in "Quantum of Solace." This has me so excited the mere glance at any of the related magazine cover stories I am ravenously collecting leads to a childish glee and unyielding smile. It is the kind of awestruck reaction Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" displays when fantasizing about his Red Ryder BB gun.

They had three children, Katie, Phillip, and Denise and lived there until moving with the Arden Farms company to Moses Lake in 1960. Her passion for life showed in the many organizations and activities in which she was involved. Beth spent many years actively working in Republican Party politics and served several years as the state committee woman from Grant County on the Republican State Committee. Mathew T. Horn
Mathew T. Horn, 41, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. He was born on Nov. 3, 1966, in Ellensburg, to Pete and Elva Horn, and was the eldest of three children. Matt graduated from Ephrata High School with the Class of 1985. In 1986 Matt met the love of his life, Mona D. Webster and they recently celebrated their 22nd anniversary in April of this year. The first of their two children was born in 1989, Jacob D. “Jake” who was the absolute pride and joy of Matt’s life, and in 1994 Josephine E. “Josie” was born, the apple of her daddy’s eye. Matt was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments - Jake when he won the Washington State 2A wrestling championship and received a scholarship to wrestle at St. Cloud State College in Minnesota, and Josie for continuously achieving a 4.0 GPA and her future plans to enter the medical profession. He started his own business in 1988, “Matt Horn Professional Window Cleaning Services.” He spent innumerable hours driving all over Grant County building his clientele from just a few customers to way too many to count. It truly became a family business when Jake and Josie started spending their summers working with him. Matt also enjoyed venturing out in the night to help Jake with his pigeon business. Matt and Mona, along with their close friends, Brad and JoAnn Rushton, purchased a cabin and 25 acres in 1993 by Republic, Wash. This was the beginning of his dream that someday he and Mona would retire on this pristine piece of land. Along with his family and friends, Matt spent countless weekends at the cabin riding the mountain trails on the quads, and literally putting his blood and sweat into working on the cabin, and at the end of the day gathering around the campfire just spending good, quality time together. Matt is survived by his wife Mona, his son Jake and daughter Josie; his parents, Pete and Elva; his brother Jason and wife Erika; his sister Brandy and husband Ben; grandmother June Hunt-zinger; grandparents Lloyd and Mary Huss; in-laws Karin and Don Webster; sister-in-law Petra and husband Dan Resendez; sister-in-law Nancy and husband Mike Schubeck; Brad and JoAnn Rushton; aunt and uncle Bette and Don Heyer; uncle and aunt Jim and Karen Huntzinger; several nieces, nephews, other family members and numerous friends so close they were considered family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents George and Ida Horn; grandfather Irvin Hunt-zinger; and brother-in-law David Crowe. Matt was truly a family man and friend who will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know and love him. We were truly blessed to have this too-short of time with Matt. A memorial account for the family has been set up at GRANCO Federal Credit Union, 217 Alder St. S.W., Ephrata. For more information please contact Sue Fronsman at 509-754-5233.

Charles Alan Curtis
Our loving father and dear friend passed away at the age of 57, Sunday Oct. 12, 2008, in his home in Liberty Lake, Wash., surrounded by loved ones. Charlie was born Feb. 10, 1951, in Ephrata, to Marian and Louis Curtis. He was a graduate of Ephrata High School and very proud graduate of Washington State University. You would definitely count Charlie as a loyal Coug! After graduating from WSU with a BS in civil engineering, he moved 17 times with his career and eventually settled in Spokane, where he worked as an insurance broker for the rest of his years. Charlie married his beloved wife of 31 years, Robin, in 1974. They had two beautiful girls together, Haley and Nikki, and also raised a warmhearted nephew, Johnny, as their son. Charlie’s true passions in life were family, friends and fly-fishing. He also loved to golf, ski and watch as many ball games he could fit in on a Sunday. Charlie was an amazing father, husband, provider, friend and human being. His humor and grace never ceased to amaze those who were lucky enough to know him. Even as he struggled and fought the cancer that eventually took his life, he continued to warm and comfort those around him with his contagious smile. He had the ability to make anyone laugh even at the saddest of times. He was truly a kind and great man. He was preceded in death by both his mother Marian and father Louis. He is survived by his daughters Haley and Nikki, their mother Robin, his sister Merelene, his son Johnny, his grandchildren Callie and Ben, and countless family and friends, all of whom he held so close to his heart. Charlie will miss all of you as we know you will miss him. We can only hope that we will learn as much from his death as we did from his wonderful life and inspiring character. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Oct. 18 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave. Spokane at 2 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow at the Manito Golf and Country Club. Cards and condolences may be sent to the Curtis residence at 1406 S. Lilac Lane Liberty Lake, Wash. 99019. Charlie asked that any donations in his name be made to either Hospice of Spokane or the KMC Foundation for Kootenai Cancer Center Research.
