Legacy of Hope open to families

QUINCY - Legacy of Hope, a one-woman show by Susie Vanderlip, is presented to the community Monday at Quincy High School.

The free event is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the high school's performing arts center, 16 6th Ave. S.E. in Quincy.

"Ms. Vanderlip will portray a series of characters that are dealing with real-life teen, young adult and family issues that range from alcohol and drug abuse to teen pregnancy, irresponsible sexuality, gangs, AIDS, violence, suicide, domestic abuse, depression, self-harm and low self esteem," according to Legacy of Hope.

Following the portrayals, Vanderlip provides adults and youth with a message of resiliency, hope and wisdom, according to the organization.

"All our youth and families need messages of encouragement and emotional support," Vanderlip stated.

Washington State University Grant-Adams Extension Washington Regional Afterschool Specialist Jeannie Kiehn and the Quincy High School Associated Student Body are event sponsors.

"I would like to see her be able to help some of the teenagers with some of the stress in their lives," Kiehn said.

Kiehn said she is inviting everyone in the North Central region, including residents of Grant, Adams, Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan counties.

Kiehn said she received a grant through her job to work with afterschool programs.

"I thought this was a great way to highlight afterschool programs and to help kids," she said.

Kiehn said Vanderlip will speak with audience members one-on-one after the program is finished.

Information is offered from organizations including New Hope Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center, 21st Century and Quincy Partnership for Youth.

When Kiehn saw Vanderlip speak at a Georgia conference, she was instantly engaged by the speaker, she said.

An assembly will be offered to freshmen and sophomores during the school day, before the public event.
