Must be paid by end of the month

GRANT COUNTY - Grant County property taxes are due by the end of the month.

Residents can pay either by mail or in person at the treasurer's office on the second floor of the Grant County Courthouse. Grant County Treasurer Darryl Pheasant said people need to make sure they bring their payments into the post office if they're mailing them.

"You need to make sure they postmark it," he said. "State law says it has to be postmarked by Oct. 31 … Even if you brought it into our office (on Nov. 1), it'd still be late."

For people mailing in their payments, they'll want to send in the coupon on the bottom right of their bill, according to the treasurer's office. If they have more than one statement, they can make one check out for the entire amount. Payments also can be left in the drop box outside of the treasurer's office for people who don't want a receipt.

Late payments are charged a 1 percent penalty monthly. If the owner hasn't paid the bill by the end of November there is an additional 8 percent charge.

"That's why we do a courtesy mailing in November," Pheasant said. "Hopefully people pay to avoid that big penalty."
