A Clinton presidency would be disastrous
All those in the “Never Trump” crowd please consider what damage our country will experience with a Clinton victory. The Supreme Court will become dominated by six or seven liberal justices. Disastrous Obamacare will increase our insurance premiums approximately 30 percent in 2017. More open borders, many more refugees that will not be properly vetted and amnesty given to all illegal immigrants. Higher corporate taxes, more regulations and almost twice the current minimum wage will result in driving more jobs and industry out of our country. More government spending resulting in an unsustainable federal debt of approximately 30 trillion dollars. Further restricting the development of our rich natural energy resources. There will be an increase in taxes. Our constitution will be under attack, especially the Second Amendment. The continued acceptance of late-term abortions partially paid by us the taxpayer. More power given to the EPA and other bureaucracies that will implement more suffocating regulations. Less support for our law enforcement officers. I could list many more reasons not to vote for Hillary, but we have to recognize that we will be electing the most corrupt presidential candidate of all time who should be disqualified from even running for the office of president. Please look past some of Trump’s flaws and understand that his policies will sharply contrast with all of the above policies of Clinton’s. He will “make America great again” by shaking up Washington, D.C.
Open government wins in Lincoln County
The statewide watchdog group, the Washington Coalition for Open Government, honored Lincoln County commissioners with a Key Award for approving a resolution in September that opened negotiations with county union employees to the public. We think the honor was well deserved and showed courage on the rural county’s part. Commissioners took a stand in the public’s best interest and they should be applauded for it. We are glad they were recognized on a statewide level because their efforts will gain more widespread attention, emphasis and traction. Their decision and strong stance mattered. Commissioners took to heart their responsibility of being stewards of taxpayer funds. They refused to bend to pressure and other counties and public entities should take note.

Estudillo best suited to bench
I have worked for Grant County for 10 years. In my position at the county, I work very closely with judges, the current court commissioner and any pro tem commissioners that fill in on the bench and attorneys. After working closely with both Judge Estudillo and his opponent, Nick Wallace, I can say with 100 percent certainty that Judge Estudillo has the most experience and the best temperament, and is the most knowledgeable for the job. His respect and compassion for others is quite apparent through his rulings on the bench and his relationships with colleagues. He is the type of person who never looks down on others because of their race or life choices.

Fishing has heated up this past week. Cooler days and cooler nights have radically cooled our water temperatures to a low 60-degree mark. The water level on Potholes Reservoir continues to slowly rise. On Oct. 20 the pool height on Potholes is 1032.90 elevation. The Potholes Canal will be shut off on Monday, Oct. 24. Once this happens the water level will rise very rapidly. This allows better boating access for fishers and duck hunters. Every fall this cooling enhances trout action for bank fishers at Medicare Beach. Limits are being reported on trout from 2l pounds to 5 pounds. Most anglers are using Power Bait and a night crawler. Some of the seasoned Medicare bank fishers use a mini marshmallow with a Pautzke Ball of Fire or a mini marshmallow with a night crawler on a size 6 bait hook. Soda Lake below O’Sullivan Dam also have some amazing rainbow trout. Bass action on Potholes Reservoir has been good for largemouth bass in the sand dunes and smallmouth bass on the face of O’Sullivan Dam near Goose Island.

Superior Court Judicial Officer supports Wallace
Before Governor Inslee appointed David Estudillo to the Grant County Superior Court, the Grant County Bar Association conducted a poll of its members to provide input for the governor from those of us who were most knowledgeable about the candidates and their qualifications. Nick Wallace was determined to be by far the most qualified candidate. Nonetheless, the governor appointed David Estudillo.
Mutual respect is better than division
People need to have good hearts. A letter to the editor on Sept. 29, 2016 caught my attention. It shows how divided people have become. A gentleman remarked about “police profiling,” perhaps without recognizing he was profiling behaviors of others based upon visual clues. He identified himself as “African-American” rather than “an American.” He had already placed himself into a “propaganda box” that divides people into little groups. Groups that can be, and are, manipulated by corrupt politicians.
Former secretaries of state endorse Wyman
We should be grateful that Washington’s elections are trustworthy, accurate and run by Secretary of State Kim Wyman. She’s a leader who has kept Washington’s edge in voter registration, turnout, and ballot security.
Time to replace Newhouse with Didier
Two years ago in our congressional primary Clint Didier defeated all of his challengers easily. In almost any state but ours he would have faced the top Democrat and become our Representative in Congress. Since we have this ridiculous top-two election system, the second-place finisher Dan Newhouse (also a Republican) was the challenger to Mr. Didier. Since Newhouse is a moderate, establishment Republican, he appealed to Democrats and pro-amnesty moderates from both parties and pulled out a narrow victory. Once he got to Congress, he did just what we warned he would do. He joined in with the establishment Boehner Republicans and voted for another bloated trillion-dollar budget that increased our debt. He supported funding for Planned Parenthood and their millions of taxpayer-supported abortions, funding for “sanctuary cities,” funds for more Syrian refugees and continued funding for the failed debacle called Obamacare. Dan Newhouse is not the type of congressman we need. Clint Didier is a true Constitutional conservative. He will stand up to a progressive tax-and-spend president, not just go along to get along and continue spending our country into oblivion. It is time to fix the mistake of 2014 and put Clint Didier in Congress where he belongs.

Wallace has the right kind of experience
People often ask, what kind of experience matters when choosing a Superior Court judge in Grant County? Experience in Grant County Superior Court is imperative. For over 20 years Nick Wallace has practiced law in Grant County Superior Court. Nick’s opponent, Mr. Estudillo, had little or no experience in Grant County Superior Court when Governor Inslee appointed him. Governor Inslee appointed Mr. Estudillo to fill Judge Sperline’s position, but Judge Sperline, who had served on the court for over 32 years, did not recall Mr. Estudillo ever appearing in his courtroom.
Today's runners should know who paved the way
I realize the “Running Boom” done boomed, and I’ll be the first to tell you I can’t name a single American distance runner in the past 20 years. Well, except for Galen Rupp, who became the first U.S. man to take the podium since 1964 after winning the silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the London Games in 2012.
Grant County Superior Court judicial race Local judges support Wallace
I grew up in this community and am now raising my children here. Grant County is my home and I definitely consider myself to be a “local resident.” I am also an attorney in Grant County. As an attorney in Grant County, this election is one that affects my clients on a daily basis. I am supporting Nicholas Wallace. This is not because I am against Mr. David Estudillo. In fact, on all accounts, Mr. Estudillo appears to be a nice guy. However, that isn’t nor should be the reason to vote for him as a Superior Court judge. Don’t make a decision based upon whom you attend church with, whom your neighbor is, or simply because you like the look of someone’s sign.

Clinton's election means things are improving for women

Judge David Estudillo – in his own words
Throughout my campaign, it has been difficult to hear and read opinions — stated as absolute “facts” — offered by those seeking to sway perceptions of who I am and my judicial qualifications. Particularly peculiar are opinions offered by predecessors who admit they have never visited my courtroom. In wading through these opinions, one thing is clear — no one ever states that my level of performance as a judge has been anything other than competent and honorable.
MLHS sports classification: What's the right fit?
As the Moses Lake School District prepares for its Feb. 14 bond, talks are taking place about the future of the town’s high school sports. If the bond passes for a new high school, a second high school would be added. So far, it appears Moses Lake High School and the new second high school would both drop down to a 2A size. Moses Lake High School is currently classified by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) as a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state. There are 1B and 2B schools for generally less-populated areas and smaller schools and 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools for larger school districts.
Wallace has lived a life of service to Grant County
As this race comes to a close – with ballots to be sent out shortly – it is important to pass along two key reasons why we believe Nick Wallace is the superior candidate for Grant County Superior Court Judge.
Wallace's political leanings more suited to Grant County
Judicial elections are non-partisan, but judicial candidates’ political leanings are important. Judges makes judgment calls. Judgment calls reflect jurists’ worldviews, which correlate to their political leanings. And examining who supports a particular judicial candidate helps us determine whether the candidate’s judgment aligns with ours. In our Superior Court race, the contrast is stark that Nick Wallace’s political leanings and judgment are consistent with Grant County voters.

Vote no on Initiative 1501
Initiative 1501 would increase the state penalties for criminal activity, theft and consumer fraud for seniors and vulnerable individuals, but federal law already provides penalties that exceed those proposed. Why are we voting on an initiative that is a duplication of federal law? In reality the measure is attempting to take away our freedom of choice and information.

Wallace has the qualities we want in a judge
I am probably the only person who knows Nick Wallace and Judge David Estudillo both personally and professionally. Estudillo and I worked together from 2000 through 2001. Since then, I have seen him at birthday parties and barbecues with common friends. I have appeared before him often in the past year.
Wallace has the experience and common sense we need
The voters of Grant County are best served by a judge who made a decision to focus on serving Grant County early in his profession. Nick Wallace has been practicing law in Grant County for over 20 years. Nick has the experience and temperament I have observed in the best judges. In addition to his experience as an attorney, he has over 11 years of experience in Grant County Superior Court as a part-time (pro tem) court commissioner and has been serving at the request of our current and past judges.

Surprise, support for Knolls Vista teacher
MOSES LAKE — Knolls Vista kindergarten teacher Brenda Britton said she suspected something might be going on. A few friends from school invited her for an early-morning cup of coffee. And her husband Patrick said he’d take their son to school. And there was that email that went around summoning the entire KV staff to a meeting Thursday morning. About a school event, it said, but Brenda said she thought that had all been settled, despite her friends' insistence to the contrary. And Brenda was right - it was all a ploy, a ruse, to surprise her with a school-wide show of support. Brenda is fighting breast cancer, and staff members had T-shirts made in her honor and wore them Thursday morning. (Fifth-grade teacher Jack McLauchlan wore a pink shirt with a natty pink bow tie in lieu of a T-shirt.) Brenda’s kindergarten class also got T-shirts and wore them Thursday. Each teacher gets a small stipend from the Knolls Vista PTO, and her fellow kindergarten teachers donated their stipends to pay for the class T-shirts. “What a tremendous amount of support,” Brenda said. It wouldn’t be possible for her to keep teaching without the support of family, friends and fellow teachers, she said. Her prognosis is good, she said, because her cancer was identified early. But because of her genetic history the treatment is pretty aggressive. She is undergoing chemotherapy - two treatments down, four to go, she said - followed by radiation. Patrick Britton said he was thinking about supportive T-shirts and called Brenda’s fellow kindergarten teacher Kim Francisco to see what the staff thought about it. Francisco said the staff was already thinking along the same lines. Patrick Britton said if he had some advice to give, it’s “get those mammograms done.” Early detection dramatically improves the chances of successful treatment, he said. Brenda lost her hair as a result of treatment (she wears a wig to school), “so I shaved my head,” he said. As her treatment requires her to give up things, he does too, he said, as part of his show of support. “What she can’t do, I’m not doing either, because she’s not alone.” The support of family and friends is important, Patrick Britton said, so that patient knows they are not alone. The Britton family has set up a GoFundMe account under the title, “Brenda Britton’s battle with cancer" to help pay medical expenses not covered by insurance.
Wet, windy, weekend weather in Columbia Basin
MOSES LAKE — It’s going to be wet and windy out there this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a wind warning for the Columbia Basin for Friday, calling for “windy and gusty conditions” through Friday night. It’s part of a series of storms that is expected to make it rain, or at least increase the possibility of rain, into early next week. The NWS forecast sustained winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour through Friday evening, with gusts 45 to 50 miles per hour. The winds are expected to die down after 8 p.m. - and then on Saturday, it’s going to rain. ‘It’s going to be wet everywhere,” said Steven Van Horn, meteorologist with the NWS Spokane office. It won’t be quite as rainy in the Columbia Basin as it’s expected to be in the Seattle and Spokane areas, but Saturday’s storm is expected to drop up to one-half to three-quarters of an inch locally, Van Horn said. The rain should be heaviest from late Saturday morning into Saturday night, he said. The good news is, it will warm up a little. Friday’s high is forecast for 62 degrees, and it’s supposed to top out at about 60 on Saturday. The rain tapers off Saturday night and Sunday, when the chance of rain falls to 40 percent. It’s forecast to be mostly cloudy but warm, 60 to 62 degrees, Sunday and Monday. The chance of rain ramps back up Tuesday, but partly sunny weather is forecast for Wednesday. Coastal regions and inland valleys on the west side are forecast to bear the brunt of the storm, with rainfall totals reaching 2 to 5 inches over the Cascades. The rain will get to Spokane by Saturday afternoon, and there’s a higher chance of rain continuing into Sunday and Monday.

Breast cancer survivors stress regular exams, taking control
MOSES LAKE — Stephanie Maiers-Chambers said the diagnosis of breast cancer was a horrible moment, but the outpouring of support after the diagnosis was overwhelming. “I’ve never felt so much love,” she said. Christin Boisse said she learned to speak up when she thought something was wrong. “Definitely be your own advocate when it comes to your health care.” Maiers-Chambers and Boisse were among the speakers on a panel of breast cancer survivors at “Breast Friends Forever,” a seminar Wednesday on breast cancer detection and treatment sponsored by the Samaritan Healthcare Foundation. A panel of physicians and an imaging technician talked about what patients can expect if they receive a cancer diagnosis. Stephanie and Christin were joined on the panel by Shirley Bartalle, a two-time survivor. “Real heroes,” said Angel Kneedler, director of the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. “My message to all of you is early detection,” Bartalle said. Early detection is the reason she was sitting there Wednesday night, she said. Bartalle said he first diagnosis came in 1999, when she was 53. “It showed up again on the other side” in 2011. Her doctors gave her a range of options for treatment, and she decided on a double mastectomy, with reconstructive surgery at the same time. In Shirley’s case, when the cancer recurred it was found before it spread to her lymph nodes. When the doctor gave her that news, “that was a huge day,” she said. Maiers-Chambers said her first indication something was wrong was being tired all the time. She had a mammogram, a follow up was required, then she received the diagnosis. “I couldn’t believe it was happening to me.” Her cancer had spread to some lymph nodes. “Nobody respects the lymphatic system until you have some removed,” she said. Her treatment included chemotherapy and radiation, and it was rough. But she received an outpouring of support. “My family was insanely amazing. Especially my husband,” she said. Friends rallied around, “people who didn’t know me very well sent me text messages.” Boisse developed inflammatory breast cancer, which affects about 1 to 5 percent of breast cancer patients in the U.S. It usually gets diagnosed later (stage 3 or stage 4), because it’s different from other breast cancers. She was pregnant when her symptoms appeared, she said, and her doctors suspected - and treated - other illnesses. That was when she learned, she said, that it’s important to find experts in her disease and ask as many questions as necessary. She ended up seeking treatment in Texas. “This is life or death stuff.” If people want to give to cancer causes, Christin said, she would suggest supporting research. Her type of cancer means “I will be in treatment for life,” she said, but advances in research mean the treatment won’t be as debilitating. “I’m here and can have a normal life,” she said. Support of family and friends has been vital while she was fighting the disease, she said. Christin and Stephanie said the support that helped them the most were the gestures people made - offering to care for their children for a few hours, volunteering to do some housework, fixing and dropping off a meal. “There are so many little things,” Boisse said. When people tell a cancer patient to call if they need anything, “we won’t call,” she said. “You just come.”

Drugs and alcohol can ruin lives
Just say no to drugs and alcohol. Learn to love yourself and keep hope and break free from drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol destroy families and children. Many people who struggle with drugs and alcohol seek love, and true love can change anyone. Don’t give up on people who struggle with drugs and alcohol. Hope and dreams always come true to those who believe. Don’t let drugs and alcohol destroy your future and life. Today, just say no to drugs and alcohol and start your new life in 2017. I’m helping somebody break free from drugs and alcohol because drugs destroyed and killed my mother at an early age. In closing, to everybody, in 2017, learn to love yourself and keep hope.
