MOSES LAKE — Remember your first bike? The wind in your face, that first taste of freedom. A Moses Lake business woman wants to keep that spirit alive.

Dawn Witthuhn opened Moses Lake Cyclery at 503 W. Valley Rd., Suite I with the idea opening up the door to the open road, or off-road for that matter.

“My passion with bikes is that I see these little kids that need their bikes fixed and don’t have much money. I had one woman come in and had a couple of bikes for her grandkids, but was living on a fixed income,” Witthuhn said. “She asked how much it would cost. I told her I’d do it for $5 and she almost cried because no one has done that for her.”

Witthuhn opened Moses Lake Cyclery in June with a selection of bicycles and accessories. She does all the repair work herself.

“When the business gets bigger, I want to have kids come in and have their own work station,” Witthuhn said. “I’ll have techs show them how to put their own bike together, show them how to do basic repairs. They can bring their mom and dad in and make it a family. That way they all have opportunities to enjoy their bikes together.”

The shop is currently on West Valley Road, but Witthuhn has plans to move to a new location at 210 W. Third Ave. within the next few months, where she intends to expand into skateboards and snowboards.

“I’m excited I eventually want to develop into skateboards and snowboards,” she said. “I recently signed a contract with a skateboard company, Santa Cruz Skateboards, I’m waiting for the move so I get the boards and inventory.

“I also intend to expand the cycle shop inventory once we make the move.”

Witthuhn joined the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce recently and is settling in as a first-time business owner.

“Being in the chamber gives me a chance to talk with other people and develop ideas and meet new people,” she said. “I will eventually have a grand opening.”
