YARD WASTE Reader wants more consideration
It is that time of year again. The falling leaves and the yard waste is insurmountable I know, but, please find another option for discarding versus burning. When you have a large pile of wet leaves and twigs smoldering for hours, it literally fouls the air for hours and makes it almost impossible to take a deep breathe. Please think of others that may not have the benefits of health that you obviously enjoy.

GOVERNMENT Reader responds to previous writer
I would like to respond to a recent letter by Scott Hudson. His letter disagreed with a previous letter to the editor I had written. The reason In my letter I "managed to get in every Democratic talking point" is because I am a Democrat. Small government, less taxes, and less government spending has never helped a struggling economy. and here are the reasons. We actually need taxes, and government spending, because when you reduce all of that, in the hopes of improving the economy. This is the result. The hungry will become hungrier. Our teachers, will once again have to figure out how to make a shrinking education budget last another school year. The poor and elderly, the ones who actually built our cities, and contributed to this great country, lose programs. Law enforcement agencies lose prevention programs, and you will continue to add to the ever-growing number of unemployed Americans, many of whom are former government workers, who I am sure, can tell you what smaller government looks like. Oh and you can also say goodbye to veterans funding, which is a travesty, because the veterans are the real patriots, not the ones who pretentiously call themselves patriots, because they carry a pocket version of the constitution (made in china, gotta love the irony) in their coat pocket. When I see these aforementioned "benefits" of reduced taxes, small government, and less government spending, it's hard for me to feel that swelling national pride. In Scott's letter, he mentions my opinions are "very typical of those who depend on the other half who actually pay federal taxes so the other half can pay nothing." I am a husband, a father, I work full time, and am a homeowner, so your comparison is empty and baseless, just like Tea Party ideology.

JASON AVILA Friend urges votes for candidate
I've known Jason Avila ever since our days at Garden Heights. I've worked with him at Big 5 Sporting Goods. He was in my wedding. If there is one thing that you need to know about Jason, it's that he's probably the hardest worker I know. It's been fun for me to watch him succeed in starting a business and sustain it. He's done it with integrity, hard work, and the support of his family and friends. I know Jason will be great for Moses Lake if he's elected to City Council. Ever since our days at Big 5 he's always talked about giving back and wanting to make a difference in the community.

Reader pleased with yard waste program
On Wednesday 10/19/11, the Moses Lake city yard waste chipping machine and crew ran 125 feet of branches from several households through the machine. These were on the street in front of my house and the lot next door. This is a very valuable service by the city as it enables those of us that have large trees to have the branches removed. We wish to thank the city for providing this service once in spring and once in fall, which I believe was initiated by Dick Deane several years ago. In addition, I wish to compliment the city for the very fine statues in the downtown area. I think the statues are really attractive and represent the athletics of this city very well. I understand that Don Garrett of the Parks and Recreation Department made them.

Reader explains Tea Party values
Where was the Tea Party? As someone who actually does a little research before forming too firm a position, I'd like to risk being told where to go for not agreeing with Mr. Reese. I won't waste time asking where he was. First, the Tea Party had not been officially formed. There has been decades where protectors of liberty and the Constitution have met in small and larger groups to discuss the outrages being done by politicians from both major parties at all levels. Those outrages done during the Bush years pushed many of us to get more actively involved. The mandates, czars, and new regulations and other Obama idiocies is what finally blossomed into the Tea Party.

JON LANE - Reader supports council candidate
I am writing to urge the voters of Moses Lake to retain Jon Lane on the city council. I got to know Jon when he served as principal of St. Rose school, beginning in 2005. Although I expect he would not be inclined to bring it up, I think it is important for other voters to know that he made significant personal sacrifices to come to the school, out of a sense of personal responsibility to help make it a better place. I have observed the same to be true of his work on the city council. We are fortunate to have a leader with his commitment to service, integrity, and strong values.
Herman David Liebrecht
Herman Liebrecht passed away August 19, 2011 surrounded by his loving family, he was born on Feb. 26, 1928 in Poplar, Mt. to Henry and Millie Liebrecht.
DICK DEANE - Re-election bid is thanks for dedication
I am very pleased to see that Dick Deane is running for re-election to the Moses Lake City Council. As a coach and educator, he has had a positive influence upon the lives of scores of the youths in our community over the past couple of decades and has dedicated his life to the improvement of the Moses Lake area as a community. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dick Deane for all his years of service to the entire Moses Laek area and he deserves our support for re-election to the city council. Please join me in offering that support.

MUSEUM EXHIBIT - Reader impressed by cultural display
I highly recommend the Yakima Valley Museum for the exhibit "Land of Joy and Sorrow," depicting the history of the Japanese people in the Yakima Valley. I also applaud those who contributed to, and supported, the creation of this exhibit. It includes story boards, historical documents, poetry, recorded voices, photos and memorabilia saved for a century and contributed by Japanese residents of the valley and the Columbia Basin. It follows the immigration of the Japanese to America in the early 20th century, their dedication to their new homeland and development of agriculture of the region, their incarceration in internment camps during World War II, their contributions to the American war efforts, and their beginning life all over again throughout the Pacific Northwest following release from the camps in the summer of 1945. The Yakima Valley Museum has done a masterful job not only of bringing to life the history of the Japanese in the valley, but also in communicating the spirit of the Japanese people, now an integral part of their respective communities. I hope this exhibit can become a permanent exhibit.
TODD VOTH - Reader endorses candidate for position 7
As a business owner and concerned citizen I recommend Todd Voth be elected to the Moses Lake City Council. Bringing new business, jobs, and shopping to the community is part of Todd's platform. He believes the city can bring new business to our great community be offering infrastructure assistance and deferring tax base. He has been on the planning commission for the past six years and is active in implementing changes to the current landscape ordinance. He was also proactive in creating an ordinance that provides the businesses on the Wheeler corridor to use larger signage. Todd believes the city's relationship with Grant County and the Port of Moses Lake is critical to future growth. The community of Moses Lake is ready for change. Please join me in supporting Todd Voth for city council position 7.
Police candidate list down to seven
MATTAWA - The Civil Service Commission told the Mattawa City Council on Oct. 6 that it has pared its list of candidates for a police officer position to seven people.
Reader likes 'hero' in council race
Very few cities in the US have their own hometown "hero." Moses Lake is one of the lucky few. Jon Lane, through his courageous, swift actions in the midst of a life-threatening emergency, ended an extremely hostile situation peacefully and undoubtedly averted the loss of several additional lives in a tragically fatal incident.
COUNCIL RESIGNATION - Reader tries to clear the air
I cannot understand that if Ms. Bernette didn't want to resign there wasn't anyone that could force her to. She's an elected official. Only the council could with three unexcused absences which she did not have. Or be impeached, which is a court ordeal. She should have told the mayor, 'no,' and continued walking her dog.
JON LANE - Reader supports 'dedicated community leader'
I would like to express my support for Jon Lane for Moses Lake City Council. Because Jon and his wife feel it's very important to always shop locally, I've had the pleasure of working with, and getting to know, them at Furniture West over the last 15 years. Jon works well with other members of the city council and city staff. He believes that good planning and working together with all the concerned private and public agencies will insure a bright future for Moses Lake. Jon has working to improve relationships with Grant County and it committed to serving the citizens of Moses Lake. I feel Jon will give his time, 100 percent commitment, and passion to serve our community. Jon is a caring family man, a dedicated community leader, a hero and so for those reasons, and many more, Jon Lane deserves your vote.
MEDICARE - Reader upset by benefit cuts
As a Medicare beneficiary who has recently moved into an assisted living facility, I was very disappointed to hear about Medicare payment reductions to nursing homes coming out of Washington DC. I understand fully from my own experience how crucial stable Medicare funding is to patients and the doctors, home health care workers and facilities we turn to when we need help.

KITTITAS - The Warden Cougars strolled in to Kittitas looking to get a win and move into a tie for the top spot with the Coyotes, but were turned back in three sets, (22-25, 14-25, 23-25).
DICK DEANE - Readers support longtime council member
Dick Deane has provided thoughtful and caring leadership in our community for many years. As a civic leader Mr. Deane has been willing to listen carefully to new ideas presented to the city council and consider the health, safety, and quality of life aspects of his decisions. Mr. Deane asks tough questions to bring about a full understanding to all parties in decision-making situations. Mr. Deane employs a sound common sense value to decisions accompanied with a genuine sense of humor. We encourage voters to support Dick Deane in his re-election to the Moses Lake City Council.
GRANT COUNTY - Reader wants change in government
In response to your article about the state auditor's office finding fault over certain Grant County behavior, I have to ask: When will the county get its act together?
Joshua Montano

Georgia Buchheim
Georgia Ann Buchheim, 83, of Royal City, WA, died peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2011 at her home in the presence of her two loving sons, after a short battle with lung cancer.
JIM LIEBRECHT - Reader wants different person on council
In the coming city council election, the husband of councilwoman Karen Liebrecht, who is Jim Liebrecht, is running for a council position. This means that if he is elected, there will be two of the seven council positions filled from the same household. I do not think that this is a good situation for our representation.

DICK DEANE Readers supports incumbent councilman
We have known Dick Deane for many years and have appreciated the many things he has done for our community, especially the excellent city park system. Besides parks, next week you'll see a city truck and chipper going around grinding up tree limb prunings that city residents have put out to be ground up. You can credit Dick Deane for this program that saves citizens money and prompts homeowners to keep trees tidy and safe. The city does this every spring and fall. Dick promotes projects that make our town a better place to live. On a personal level, after the Mt. St. Helens ash-fall, we were out of town and Dick came by and shoveled ash off our roof so it wouldn't cave in. What a great neighbor! In the spring, when we go walking down Northshore Drive, we'll see him going up and down the sidewalk, spot-spraying neighbor sidewalk weeds (free). Anything to help the neighborhood look sharp. He's that kind of guy. Always forward looking, getting things done and dedicated to improving our town. Please vote to retain Dick Deane for Moses Lake City Council.

Reader endorses Jon Lane
Jon Lane is seeking reelection for Moses Lake City Council, position 7. His experience and genuine caring attitude for the citizens and businesses of our City is his greatest asset. For example, last spring he initiated a meeting of local managers of companies on the Wheeler Corridor to meet with City Staff and other council members. The purpose was to hear how the businesses in that area, especially newly annexed industries, were adapting to "city life". We had a few issues that were discussed and several months later he followed-up, making sure those concerns were being resolved. Jon is truly concerned that city government is serving the people, not the people serving the city'. I strongly endorse Jon as a competent and worthy City Councilman and look forward to him serving another term.

TEA PARTY: Reader disagrees with letter writer
I would like to congratulate Brian Reese for his recent diatribe against the "Tea Party." He managed to get in every Democrat Party and Labor Union talking point. Because he doesn't believe in Constitutional small government, less wasteful spending, and lower taxes, he thinks it is his job to call 20 percent of the electorate stupid, racist and tell us we should all go to hell. Very typical reaction from those who depend on the half of us who actually pay federal income tax every year so that half can pay nothing and receive so much back from the taxpayers. That is what a progressive calls "fairness." Mr. Reese, you forgot to call us "SOB's" like that great Teamsters boss did! When you have no good arguments, just call the other side names! If you have been thinking of helping the Tea Party cause, please donate to "Tea Party Patriots," "FreedomWorks" or "Tea Party Express." Every small donation will help immensely to bring our behemoth government under control!

JON LANE: Reader backs incumbent
Jon Lane has the best interest of all of Moses Lake at heart. A long time resident, educator, supporter of local business, active in the Trails Planning Team and Vision 2020 committees, and he has served on the P&R Commission as well as several terms on Moses Lake City Council. Jon does his research and knows what he is talking about before he makes any claims and does not voice a council decision before it has been voted on and approved. Also he realizes, as well as most citizens, that a decision by council is not made by one member - its takes the majority. For that reason we need intelligent, well rounded individuals and Jon Lane meets those qualifications.
DARRIN JACKSON: Reader voices support
"Our City, Your Voice" is Darrin Jackson's premise for city council which is what I have wanted to hear for many years now. Working with him first hand on Forgotten Heroes Memorial, you soon find out he puts his heart and soul in his work. We were all amazed when he created the video for "Forgotten Heroes Memorial" and then designed the donation container, to top it off he designed and built the model for the memorial of the Forgotten Heroes - we were all Speechless. He also spoke at the groundbreaking inspiring each one of us to reach inside and work on commitment, excellence and focus on what needs to be done. Darrin Jackson is our choice for city councilman as we have no doubt in our minds he will work to accomplish what needs to be done in Moses Lake to make this city a star city in the state of Washington, with everyone working together for the good of all. He gives 100 percent and you can rest assured Moses Lake will be better off to have Darrin Jackson on our city council.
MATTAWA: Reader concerned with gang violence
I know the area pretty well is especially because last year I worked for the Wahluke School District in Mattawa. I have to say that they song by Tupac, "Why do people die young?" is very true. I grew up in Grant County and it wasn't violent years back then. I moved back last year for a job and the gang activity and violence has sky rocketed and law enforcement cannot keep up. People need to take a stand and take the community back.
Reader seeks candidate's election

I know Todd to be a hard worker and would be a great addition to the council. Please join me in an effort to elect Todd Voth to Moses Lake City Council position 7.
Reader supports his re-election
I would like to give my strong support to the re-election of Dick Deane to the Moses Lake City Council. Dick has served our city well for many years. At all points in his life, Dick has been a strong voice for the children in our community and he keeps a special eye out on the well being of our park system.

STROUD KUNKLE: Reader supports port district candidate
I am supporting Stroud Kunkle for Port of Moses Lake Commissioner Position 2. I have known Stroud for close to 15 years and have had the opportunity to work with him on a number of occasions. I have found him to be a good thinker, a good listener, an honorable person that can make good decisions. His financial knowledge and skills will be a valuable asset to the port. Stroud has not only had a successful business in Moses Lake, he has served on numerous boards of local organizations. His contribution to our community has been positive and I look forward to him serving on the Port of Moses Lake. His only agenda is to serve our community in a positive way.

As the Occupy Wall Street protests spread from Lower Manhattan to Washington and other cities, the chattering classes keep complaining that the marchers lack a clear message and specific policy prescriptions. Fresh News From MarDon: Walleye and low temps at Potholes
Our Indian Summer was beautiful but now it is over. Our surface water temperatures on Potholes Reservoir have been hovering around 60 degrees. Every fall for many years when our surface temps drop to 55 degrees Walleye action starts with a swim jig or blade bait. Fishing the humps on the face of the sand dunes in 15-40 feet of water would be your best bet using this type of bait. The best size swim jig for a large walleye would be a 4, 5 or 6 inch.

Fred was a very strong man known for his kindness and generosity, never hesitating to give to others when in need. Family was his first priority, he taught us to be honest, hardworking and loyal. We will forever thank him for the life lessons, leading by example. He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing, including competing in local Walleye tournaments. I-1125: Reader opposes initiative
The last thing our state needs is another Eyman initiative undermining our shaky economic recovery. We're not going to get Washington moving again by stranding students and commuters in never-ending traffic gridlock and throwing construction workers all over the state out of work.
KINDERGARTEN: Reader praises teacher
I cannot believe the luck I had in finding the perfect kindergarten teacher for my daughter! After having her tested for early entrance and then telling me she cannot start this year in public school because of only one particular area which was in verbal (all other areas she was above in) I kept searching and searching. Alas, I found her - her name is Starlene McDaniel. Also known to her students as Miss Star. She had previously taught for 12 years before. She has the true passion to teach. She feels blessed to have children to teach and feels she is not doing her job unless these children learn. She is a certified teacher. Now, her class is very small; only four students right now but that can change.

RELAY FOR LIFE: Reader gives thanks

Thank you to Carmen Hansen for making a beautiful cake for us to enjoy at the event. Also, thank you to the businesses that donated space and time for us to advertise this event.
JON LANE: Reader supports councilmember for election
I would like to express my support for Jon Lane for Moses Lake City Council. Jon has worked very hard during his time on the city council to represent the residents of Moses Lake. He is committed to making Moses Lake an even better place to live, work and raise a family. Jon considers all sides of an issue before making a decision and works very well with city staff and other members of the council. Jon has also done an excellent job leading the council as mayor. He has helped the council work through difficult issues during that time by providing good leadership and managing council meetings very effectively. Jon has told me that he believes that good planning and working together with all concerned including community members, businesses and public agencies will insure a bright future for Moses Lake.
TRAFFIC CAMERAS: Reader disagrees with Warden plan
I recently read a letter about that cameras to be put in Warden for traffic citations. I believe this is a waste of time an tax payers who will be paying for this. Recently my son got a ticket thats fine as one would say he broke the law. I know for a fact our police officers know of others with no license but never give them a ticket why are others treated unfairly. I believe the law is only for some people who are targeted. First we start with traffic violations an our system will work their way up to bigger crimes only for one to have a record. There are other families that feel the same. Let's treat everybody a like.
DICK DEANE: Reader supports retaining councilmember
A friend of mine visited Moses Lake recently and remarked on the great parks we having in our town. I agree with him as our city parks are well planned and maintained, something we can all be proud of. This fine park system didn't just happen. Councilman Dick Deane, as a park's commissioner, worked for many years to improve our parks, and as councilman continues that support. Dick is a real promoter of Moses Lake. Any clean-up day will find Dick Deane with a bag picking up trash. He is an honest, hard working, straight shooter who is open to ideas of others. I have known Dick Deane for many years. I appreciate his forward thinking and dedication to make our town, as Dick says, "Moses Heaven." Please vote to retain Dick Deane for Moses Lake City Council.
CITY COUNCIL: Reader supports Todd Voth for city council
I would like you to consider some type of clarification about your header on my letter as supporting Todd Voth for mayor. While I would not be opposed to that, the voters need to be aware that in Moses Lakes' system of government our votes elect city council members. Then, the council itself meets to elect one of their own to be mayor. I would hope that our next (?) mayor would be a member with at least a year or two experience on the council rather than be totally new and have to lead the meetings too. I do support Todd Voth to be elected to city council. It's time for new ideas and a more frugal use of tax dollars and a more open and transparent city government. Some have been there way too long and don't care to hear dissenting opinions. The voters need to know that they won't be voting Todd to be mayor but they will be voting to change to a new mayor instead of keeping the status quo.
