Wahluke schools receive health funding
MATTAWA - The Wahluke School District has received a shot in the arm toward improving the health and fitness of its students and community.
The district has been awarded a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant.
This grant goes to local education agencies and community-based organizations to initiate, expand and improve physical education for students in K-12. Recipients must implement programs that help students make progress toward state standards.
"We have applied four times for this grant," said Jeff Ahmann, lead person in the application process. "This year we used an outside grant writer."
The grant covers three years. It will provide the district with $326,000 the first year and $125,000 each of the next two years.
"The first year is the highest because it is for most of the equipment that each building will purchase for their health and PE programs," Ahmann said.
The grant covers K-12 curriculum and health and nutrition programs for the community. District grant writer Ima Terry will be the grant administrator.
