In addition to containing vitamins and nutrients babies need in the first six months of life, breast milk is packed with disease-fighting substances that protect babies from illness. It is for this reason that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months (although any amount of breastfeeding is beneficial). Scientific studies have shown that breastfeeding is good for the mother as well.

As stated in her campaign literature, Legislative District 13 candidate Sylvia Hammond intends to work to: 1) strengthen public schools, colleges and trade and technical schools, 2) bolster and diversify our local economy, 3) support our farmers and businesses with necessary infrastructure and by cutting red tape and working for fair tax policies, 4) support veterans and military families, and 5) promote safe and healthy communities. Aren’t these the important issues for central Washington? A vote for Sylvia Hammond says, “I too value hard work, families, education and integrity.”

Kudos to Elizabeth Reynolds and Confluence Health
I am writing to make our community aware of an exceptionally talented and compassionate provider at the Moses Lake, Wash. walk-in clinic. Her name is Elizabeth Reynolds, PA-C and she is my champion. I visited her at the Moses Lake walk-in clinic on June 28 after a particularly agonizing night of pain in my arms so bad I could not sleep. She listened very carefully while I explained how this pain had started six months ago and I had been seeing a rheumatologist but with no relief. Elizabeth explained she was suspicious of an autoimmune disorder and this could be confirmed very easily with a low dose of prednisone. I took the prednisone and within 12 hours my pain had reduced from 8 out of 10 to 2 out of 10 and has remained so with the prednisone dosing. I am finally pain free after eight months of sheer agony, frustration, depression and hopelessness. And this is all due to the caring and competent medical care and abilities of Elizabeth Reynolds. I had pretty much given up on ever having a life free of pain again, and Elizabeth rescued me from that. She even agreed to follow me until I can get long-term care. I have never heard of a walk-in provider doing that. This is what I call quality patient care. She was able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a challenging pathology and suggest a simple way to confirm or disprove that diagnosis. And as a plus, provide a horribly pain-stricken patient relief. And I didn’t even have to drive to a big city to get help.

Soap Lake belongs to everyone, not just event attendees
Three weeks ago, during the first Soap Lake fire, we were inundated with a hundred firefighters and their vehicles, tents, trailers, water trucks and sanitary facilities. Now on the third weekend in July, a handful of cosplay motorcyclists perform a takeover of the Soap Lake park. Tents and trailers are parked on the only hard walkway in the park. Any handicapped users are forced to trudge through the sand. All other users must weave their way through scattered paid guests. Everyone has a right to use the park and parking on the paved service road and impinging on the access of others is rude and unnecessary.
In their own words: State Representative 13th District, Position 1 candidates
My vote is for Sylvia Hammond
Sylvia Hammond deserves our support in her bid for Representative for the 13th WA Legislative District. Farming in Grant County for many years, she understands agriculture, hard work and business. Her life as a teacher has given her insight into what works in education. She is a person of high integrity and family values, and believes in supporting rural medical care and business growth that provides jobs and quality of life in Eastern Washington.

Moses Lake physician surrenders medical license
MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake physician has agreed to give up his license to practice medicine. Physician David Earl agreed to surrender his license July 17, and has 10 days to transfer his patients to other doctors and close his practice, according to a press release from the Washington Department of Health. Earl said he would give up his license during a six-day disciplinary hearing before the Washington Medical Commission. A receptionist at Earl’s clinic said there would be no comment. “In the case of Dr. Earl, the WMC spent significant time and resources over a period of years in an attempt to improve his practice to safe levels. Unfortunately, it became clear that his practice concerns and boundary violations could not be addressed and the WMC invoked (the state regulations governing) license surrender, to which Dr. Earl agreed,” wrote Micah Matthews, WMC deputy director. The hearing involved charges of unprofessional conduct filed in June 2017, related to the treatment given to 18 patients and the sale of property of another patient. The report also said Earl had failed to comply with a prior order issued by the commission. The unprofessional conduct charge was in connection with Earl’s treatment of a woman described as Patient A, who was 82 years of age when Earl became her physician in 2013. Earl arranged to buy the woman’s house, in partnership with a friend. The commission said Earl’s “involvement in Patient A’s personal affairs, at a time when she was by definition a vulnerable adult, was below the standard of care. Respondent (Earl) was in a position of trust and influence as the patient’s physician, and took advantage of that position to gain undue influence in the patient’s financial matters to gain ownership of her property.” The commission statement said Earl’s “medical records of his treatment of Patient A reflect poor quality of office visits, and show more of a concern for Patient A’s living and financial situations than her health. Documentation of office visits was inaccurate, contradictory, incomplete and misleading.” The commission statement also charged Earl with “irresponsible behavior” in prescriptions for Patient A, giving the patient early refills “without a documented reason for the increased use.” The commission statement alleged Earl had not provided adequate treatment for a 63-year-old woman whom he treated from June 2015 until her death in May 2016. The woman had been treated for substance abuse, but the medical commission statement said Earl had prescribed medications that “were not a good choice for medication for a patient with a history of alcoholism or other substance abuse.” Earl “misrepresented either that he reviewed (the woman’s previous physician’s) records or that he had no notice of Patient B’s history of substance abuse,” the commission statement said. “Respondent’s record keeping and tracking of medications make it difficult to track Patient B’s treatment and were below the standard of care.” The statement cited 17 people Earl had treated for chronic pain, and said his treatment “failed to meet the standard of care and placed the patients at risk of harm.” The medical commission statement said Earl had not met the conditions of an earlier order, issued in 2012. That order was issued to “address practice below the standard of care with five patients and charting so grossly inaccurate and misleading that it amounted to misrepresentation of the patient consultations and evaluations.” Earl’s license was placed on probation, and he was required to attend additional training. The report said Earl was in compliance at the first review, but out of compliance by the third review and never got back in compliance. Under the conditions of the order, Earl cannot practice medicine in Washington, “including any temporary, emergency or volunteer practice.”

Moses Lake physician surrenders medical license
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake physician David Earl will surrender his license and close his practice, according to a press release from the Washington Department of Health. Earl has agreed to permanent surrender his license. He has 10 calendar days to transition his patients and close his practice.” Earl had been charged with unprofessional conduct by the Washington Quality Assurance Commission.

Lessons from Sermon on the Mount
Rev. Walter Klockers, in his thoughtful article (CBH July 6, 2018) urged us to avoid the “pesky, negative” thoughts and “self-pity, resignation and despair” which sometimes result from our pursuit of perfection. Certainly good advice. But remember, it was the Lord himself, who commanded us to “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” (St. Matthew 5:48) The Lord desires to move us in that direction that we might receive his blessings. As we each consider our own life experiences, we see that the Lord does not withhold blessings until we have reached perfection but blesses and helps us in our efforts.

Moses Lake man arrested for DUI, faces additional charges

Because no criminal charges have been filed yet, the man's name has not been released, said Moses Lake Police Chief Kevin Fuhr. The accident occurred about 11 p.m. Saturday on West Gary Street, according to information released Monday by the Moses Lake Police Department. The man rolled his car and was transported to Samaritan Hospital for further evaluation. While at the hospital he was taken into custody for DUI, but not arrested due to the injuries he sustained in the accident, Fuhr said. His car was towed. The man talked to police officers about 6 a.m. Sunday, asking where his car was. Police officers told him it had been transported to a towing yard. The man allegedly went to the tow business sometime Sunday and climbed the fence, going to his car to retrieve some items. An employee of the tow yard stopped him at the time, but didn’t report the incident until later in the day.

Mulches for the garden continued
Many growers and gardeners regularly use crop residues including straw, hay, grass clippings, or leaves as mulches or cover and green manure crops which can be tilled into the soil. These types of mulches biodegrade well and can add valuable nutrients to the soil, assuming they have not been treated with pesticides, which are harmful to plants and animals. Sometimes these sources provide habitat for rodents or provide weed seed sources, so all materials should be used with caution.

WorkSource Central Basin holding job fair on Friday
MOSES LAKE — WorkSource Central Basin is hosting a job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday to help accommodate REC Silicon employees affected in the recent round of layoffs. But WorkSource administrator Todd Wurl said the event is open to anybody looking for a job or a change in careers. “We currently have 12 employers that have committed to a table at the event,” he said. The Center at 309 E. 5th Ave is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and we provide a full range of assistance to job seekers, including reemployment assistance, retraining and educational opportunities. One hundred employees were laid off at the REC Silicon Moses Lake production facility on July 2 as a result of the current dispute with China over access to the country’s market for polysilicon. REC Silicon could close its production facility in Moses Lake, according to President and CEO Tore Torvund. “I will not be firm on either closing or operating the plant, it depends on what will be the market,” Torvund said during a recent conference call. “It might be an option if nothing is happening between the U.S. and China.” During the conference call, Torvund said the round of 100 layoffs at its Moses Lake production facility was a way of adjusting the workforce and spending so REC could keep the plant operating “in the short term.” “It’s a regrettable situation for employees,” Torvund said. “It is a necessary adjustment so we can continue to operate.”

Treasurer needs to own his mistake, not blame the MLIRD
The MLIRD tax assessments have finally been received and with them came an explanation of why they were not sent out on time. “Due to unresolved concerns regarding the process used by MLIRD to compute the amount of this assessment it was not possible to include this assessment in the original tax statement sent earlier this spring to the ratepayers.” That explanation is misleading because it seems to blame the MLIRD for the delay. The MLIRD has assessed the taxes the same way for several years and nothing changed this year. The problem is that the Treasurer has no say in how the tax is assessed; his job is simply to send the bill for the assessed tax and collect said tax. By failing to send out the MLIRD assessments with all the other property tax assessments, he has not only cost the people extra money in postage (and legal fees to force him to send the assessments), but also caused hardships to the taxpayers because most people have their mortgage company pay their property taxes and spread it out over the whole year’s mortgage payments. Most people will have to pay this assessment out of their regular budget. Not only did the Treasurer insert his opinion where he had no authority, but then he tried to lay the blame on the MLIRD. The MLIRD has released a statement with much more harsh language. This is just one example of discord involving the Treasurer’s office. It may be time for new leadership in the Treasurer’s office.

Sylvia Hammond's positions better suited to Seattle
I read the April 5 letter to the editor about Ms. Hammond who is running against Rep. Matt Manweller for state legislator. The writer offers some easy platitudes about being candid and forthright. Those types of broad and vague statements are fine, but eventually she will have to be “candid and forthright” with the voters. Here is what was posted on her Facebook page. She wants to ban guns and advocates for strong gun control measures. She supports Colin Kaepernick and all the other athletes who are taking a knee during the national anthem. This is an insult to all our veterans and she wants to appeal the federal tax cuts and impeach the president. She supports allowing men into women’s bathrooms or worse, men into girl’s bathrooms. She praises socialism. Someone needs to tell Ms. Hammond that this is Grant County and not Seattle.

Family rescued from Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE — An 8-year-old boy was transported to Samaritan Hospital as a precaution after the kayak he was paddling capsized during a family outing on Moses Lake. The incident was reported at about 1 p.m. Thursday at Connelly Park. The boy and his parents were using kayaks that were unfamiliar to them, said Brent Haley, a captain with Grant County Fire District No. 5. The boy’s mother fell out of her kayak, Haley said; “it’s a new kayak to her,” and she had trouble getting back in. Seeing his mom in the water caused the boy to panic, and he fell in the lake. The boy’s father paddled over to help, got out of his kayak and had trouble getting back in. All three were wearing life jackets. A “good Samaritan on a jet ski” arrived on scene and helped the man get back in his kayak, and transported the boy to shore. The mom’s kayak began to take on water, and the jet ski rider returned to help the woman. The jet ski rider flagged down a passing boat, who transported the woman back to shore, along with the two kayaks. A Fire District No. 5 unit was en route to another incident, but was diverted to the park, Haley said. AMR ambulance personnel also responded to the scene, and transported the boy to the hospital.
