STATE BUDGET
Reader offers advice
Governor — $605 million more by taxing water, candy, gum, pop, tobacco, and oil products? Why stop there? Why not tax; coffee, tea, iPods and cellphones? Here’s a potential tax revenue. Why not tax the morons getting multiple tattoos and body piercings? In Moses Lake alone, you’d probably receive enough to balance the budget!
SUPERIOR COURT OF WASHINGTON
FOR CHELAN COUNTY
COURTS
Reader alleges racism in county courts
I’ve lost faith in our system of courts using jury members to do there dirty work. They say there’s no prejudice, but when a prosecutor and judge ask a jury to look at a witness’ education, especially when they’re officers. Does this mean officers are better than me? I might not be an officer or have much education or even money, but we shouldn’t be judged by our background. I’ve seen so much racism in our courts. Others wish to turn and ignore all that happens in court. There are people out there that know some police officers have market certain families. In my son’s first court trial, the judge didn’t allow my son’s witness to testify because she was running late. There was so much objection, over rule, sustain by the judge, during his first trial. On his second trial, a prosecutor used so many officers only to benefit her case. For one defence witness, a prosecutor brought out past records. Guess grant county officials will do anything for a guilty plea. There were no finger prints on either gun — never found on his person and wasn’t at his residence. But he was found guilty because he has a record. Gabriel will serve more time than any rapist or murder. I love my son. I was so hurt when the prosecutor indicates that I’d lie for my son. I only speak the truth and write the truth.

Reader opposes law change
Our votes became unimportant, and irrelevant to 83 percent of Democrats in the state Senate. In a bill deviously titled only “Relating to Fiscal Matters,” Senate Democrats voted to suspend the provisions of the voter Initiative-960, requiring either a 2/3 vote of the Senate or 50 percent+1 of Senate votes and a vote of the public to raise taxes. The intention was to force government to live within their means and present tax increases to the electorate as a last resort. The government has not even feigned an attempt to follow the law.

Reader defends daughter
I am Joseph Stevens, father of Suzanna D. Danzer-Thompson, I have know her for a long time. I believe she is a good kind person and not capable of “committing child abuse.” Is it possible that the agency that runs the foster care program has an overflow of willing foster care givers it can throw a few to the wolfs? I find it quite troubling that there seems to be many people “out there” with mental trouble of there own. Good Christians jumping on the band wagon! People that are foster parents that turn there back on one of there own, when they should be jumping to her defence. I could carry on for quite a while but won’t.

Dorothy Helen (Steelman) Groff
Dorothy Helen (Steelman) Groff went to her Heavenly reward on February 16th at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. Dorothy was born January 15, 1925, in Richland, Oregon, to Conrad Jefferson (C.J.) and Erna (Decker) Steelman. She was the youngest of three children. She attended school in Richland and found the man of her life, Morris Groff, there. They were married August 18, 1939, in Weiser, Idaho, and spent the first few years of their married life in Richland. All three of their children were born there. They moved to Unity, Oregon, to live on a cattle ranch for a short time, then Dorothy’s father purchased raw farm land in the Block 40 area of Moses Lake and they all moved there in the fall of 1951. Before long, many other family members moved to the Moses Lake area to farm, also. It was a hard life of picking up rocks, grubbing sagebrush and killing rattle snakes, but the families soon had green fields. It was while they lived there that Mom worked for a short time at the IGA grocery store, then started driving school bus, which lasted for 35 years! Dad decided he wanted his own land after about three years so he bought a farm in Block 42 and farmed there for several years before buying a farm in the Lind Coulee area. Mom continued driving school bus in Block 42. They moved from there to Potato Hill Road when Dad retired and lived there until 1988, when Mom moved to Cascade Valley. By this time Dad was in a nursing home. Mom sold that home in 2006 because of declining health and lived in various homes after that.

APARTMENT
Reader upset with neighbor, management
I have a question? Why is it here in Moses Lake, you can’t find a place to rent such as myself? I live on the base in apartments. I have been here two years and have been through two apartment managers and too many maintenance persons to count. My big question is why can the apartment managers not do their required job? Such as clean up around trash cans, parking lots, yards or even take care of simple problems? I live in a three bedroom apartment with a disabled child and we have the rudest, loudest neighbor above us and the apartment manager won’t do anything about it. Why? I just don’t understand. Maybe you could shed some light on the issue for us?

Readers are thankful for stranger's help
We would like to publicly thank a man from Othello by the name of Freddy for finding and returning my wife’s purse. She had left it in a shopping cart at the Target store parking lot in Kennewick. We live in Moses Lake. Freddy’s little girl noticed the purse and after finding it they took great effort in finding the owner. It turns out Freddy plays basketball with my wife’s brother, also from Othello, and took it to his house for us. We were afraid of who may have found the purse, cellphone, credit cards, checkbook ect. We are very thankful that even as bad as things may seem at times, there are a lot of good people in the Columbia Basin. Thank You Freddy and family and may God bless you for your efforts, it was appreciated very much.

SUPPORT FOR BILL
Reader encourages bill regulating centers
I encourage Basin residents to support the “Concerning Limited Service Pregnancy Centers” bill (HB2837/SB6452) which is before committee in our state government. The bill’s purpose is to ensure that limited service pregnancy centers (such as Crossroads) comply with consumer protection law. This would include informing center clients about which services the facility does not provide (such as comprehensive birth control services, abortion or medical care for pregnant women). It also proposes that all health information provided must be medically accurate. There is nothing resembling a “gag order” in this bill.

DOG SHOOTING
Reader asks for fair investigation
I am grateful to the Columbia Basin Herald for the well-written story of the shooting of the black lab, Styker. If it hadn’t been for you, the general public may not have known about this tragedy. I have talked to many and let there be no mistake, the public is outraged. One grave concerned expressed is that a deputy remains on active duty after gunning down a precious pet in cold blood. Why would anyone shoot a dog, three-times no less, after the dogs were separated. Out of anger, out of spite? Or was he just reacting? The officer had already separated the dogs and there were plenty of people there to help if the dogs started scuffling again. Was deadly force really necessary? Every deputy must have the mental tenacity to refrain from acting “trigger-happy” at any time. Don’t try to shift the blame by going after the victim with a dangerous dog ordinance citation — a leash law citation, if you must. The focus should be on the deputy. I hope a fair investigation will be made.
HEALTHCARE REFORM
Reader adds to healthcare discussion
Several political leaders have declared that with the loss of the 60 seat Democrat majority in the US Senate that healthcare reform is dead. I certainly hope they are incorrect as there are important changes that still need to be resolved under the heading of healthcare reform. As a reminder here are some starters for reasonable healthcare reform: 1) End disqualification because of pre-existing conditions; 2) End lifetime maximum for coverage; 3) Prohibit the rationing of healthcare due to a person’s age; 4) Fix the waste and fraud in the federal plans of Medicaid, Medicare, VA, and Indian Health programs; 5) Allow interstate selling of medical insurance; 6) Allow people to choose the coverage and deductibles they need (like care insurance); 7) Enact reasonable tort reform and; 7) Mandate uninsured poeple must purchase medical insurance if available from their employer AND if it is at a reasonable cost.

Throughout the 29 years of marriage Ruben moved his family 11times and had many great experiences. Some of Ruben’s favorite experiences were spending time with his grandsons, driving his corvette, enjoying good times with friends, and always being the first out on the dance floor with his wife Julie. Ruben is survived by his wife of 29 years Julie, his three children Cacye and her husband Jerry, Adam and his wife Khrinda, R. Zachary Gonzales and his two grandsons Jackson and Jacoby. He is also survived by his father Jesus, siblings Maria, Jesus Jr, and Roberto and there families. Ruben was preceded in death by his mother Isidora Gonzales. The family would like to thank Dr Zuckerman and staff, Andrea and the MSTI nurses, Dr Billingsley and staff at OHSU and the wonderful support of Kathy Alkire. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the St Lukes Hospital, MSTI, 520 South Eagle Road Meridian, ID 83642.
