EPHRATA — American Legion Riders are fearless and maybe just a little bit crazy, but it’s all for a good cause, members say.

The group consists of motorcycle riders and associates performing community service projects.

They went out in 20 degree weather last December to ride in the Ephrata Christmas Parade. Legion rider Heather Ammann carried the club’s newest flag, riding behind husband Anthony Ammann, director for the Ephrata Legion Riders.

“It took awhile for my fingers to thaw out,” Heather recalled.

Heather, one of 12 members and three supporting members, joined the group for, “good causes, good friends and a lot of good fun”.

The Legion Rider Club began in Michigan in 1993 and was reintroduced to the Ephrata Legion family by George Doles. Legion Riders grew into a worldwide club, associated with the American Legion.

The rider membership is open to any American Legion relative or Auxiliary member.

Those not owning a motorcycle, but just wish to get involved, can join as supporting members. Some supporters travel with the group during rides.

“There is a 250 mile ‘Polar Bear Ride’ held on March 27,” said Anthony.

The ride starts at 9 a.m. at the Ephrata post. Members are riding throughout north central Washington.

The riders are traveling from legion to legion, hoping to have more riders join. They are ending in Ephrata for a dinner and auction, starting at 6 p.m.

This is held at the American Legion in Ephrata, located at 276 Eighth Ave. NW. The Legion Riders are forming a committee to discuss visiting local businesses to receive funds for auction items.

Legion riders are planning a lasagna dinner open to American Legion members and guests Feb. 19. All proceeds are donated to the “Make a Wish Foundation” in the name of Samantha Webb, a local girl who passed away after a courageous bout with cancer, according to a spokesperson.
