Fresh news from Mardon Resort
This waterfowl season has been one of the most memorable in recent years. Each cold blast created lifetime memories for our customers and our guides. The cold temperatures forced birds from the north to escape Mother Nature's harshness. During these arctic conditions our tenacious guides dealt with high wind and cold weather conditions in the sand dunes on Potholes Reservoir. We are still almost completely iced up in the sand dune area but the main lake is still open for walleye fishers to come out and enjoy the catch. Fishers are using blade baits fishing 22 to 64 feet of water to catch these monster fish. Your odds are good to also catch some nice perch fishing at these depths as well. This week swim baits have produced casting and using a slow retrieve method. We are seeing the aggressive pre-spawn perch as big as 12 inches long. Jig fishers are using Whistle Pigs tipped with a night crawler.

Dave Graybill: The Fishin' Magician
The big news at the NW Ice Fishing Festival in Molson this year was that people caught fish! Yup. During the Festivals of 2012 through 2014 there were no fish caught at all. This year's event was moved to January 17th and it made a huge difference. There was 14 to 18 inches of ice on the lake, but anglers swept off deep snow and drilled through it to get to the trout. A total of 86 anglers registered for the fishing aspect of the festival, and there were trout from 10 to 18 inches caught. The grand prize winner for two fish weighing just over four pounds won the $500.00 cash prize donated by Hughes Department Store in Oroville. It was very pleased to hear of the fishing success at this year's event. The community really turns out to make this derby a great time to all those who attend, and getting fish made it even better. People, including myself, had a wonderful time in Molson even when there were not fish caught at all. Congrats Molson for moving the date and putting on a terrific event.

Dave Graybill: The Fishin' Magician
On Tuesday of this week I traveled to Bridgeport and met with Pat Phillips, hatchery manager at the Colville Tribal Salmon Hatchery, and Casey Baldwin, Senior Research Scientist for the Colville Fish and Wildlife Department. This gave me a chance to see the facility up and running with fish being processed and to talk about the near future of the salmon fishing in this region. I saw spring and summer run salmon in different stages of maturity, from just-hatched eggs to small fry that were still too young to be fed. They showed me the large ponds where the fish were being held until they would smolt and be released into the Columbia. One of the features of this hatchery is that the fish are transferred from one station to the other and finally into the river without being handled. This water-to-water transfer system greatly increases survival rates of the fish. Everything is working as it should at the new facility. Anglers are eager for the first return of salmon to the upper Columbia and this hatchery in 2017, and the return in 2018 is to be even larger.
