Royal girls in near-miss against Wahluke

ROYAL CITY - Another tough week for the Royal girls in basketball ended with a heartbreaking loss to arch-rival Wahluke.
The Knights used a 7-2 third period to build a 24-19 lead after three quarters. But they were not able to hang in the fourth quarter and fell, 35-33.
"We came up a little short," coach Phil Daubel said. "We had our chances down the stretch to win the game, but we did not execute and finish."
"I always try to hit home to the girls that every possession matters no matter what time it occurs in the game," Daubel added. "That free throw and that layup in the first quarter is just as important as the ones in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.
Flor Araujo led the Knights with nine points. Staci Hebbon and Jennifer Ledezma had seven each. Kailee Harris grabbed 13 rebounds, and Araujo had eight.
On Tuesday, Burbank took away Flor Araujo with a tough defense and took a 57-13 game. Annabelle Booth led the Knights with four points. Ledezma picked off 13 rebounds.
"We let Burbank dictate the tempo," Daubel said. "We also shot really poorly from the field, shooting only 10 percent. It also doesn't help when you turn the ball over 30 times."
Friday's game with Kiona-Benton got away early with a 15-2 Bears first quarter. The Bears won the fourth period, 14-2, to finish the 50-24 contest.
"We got off to a slow start once again. getting outscored 15-0 before we scored late in the first," Daubel said. "We shot a little better from the field tonight and did some good things defensively."
Araujo found her shooting again for a team-leading 16 points. Guadalupe Guadarrama, Jacky Guadarrama, Ledezma and Araujo grabbed three rebounds each. Araujo had four steals.
