THREE STRIKES

Reader disagrees with sentence

Between 1987 and 2007, the prison population in this country tripled. Much of that increase occurred in states that had adopted harsh punishments such as the three-strikes law and severe drug laws although they had already falling crime rates. According to the Pew Center on the States, spending from general funds on corrections increased from $10.6 billion to more than $44 billion which is a 127 percent increase. During the same period, spending on higher education only increased 21 percent.

GUEST EDITORIAL

MOSES LAKE — On the evening of Jan. 3, 2010, the Grant County Deputy Sheriffs Association lost more than a member – we lost a friend, a partner, and a father. Since that time, a group of many people worked day and night to create a ceremony that would honor Deputy Bernard and his family. On Monday, Jan. 11 at noon, we mourned the loss of our friend.

PUD RATES

Reader wants residents to take a stand

I am what our Grant County PUD calls a ‘Residential’ Rate Payer. There are over 34,000 of us here in Grant County. Everyone that pays their own household electric bill is a ‘Residential’ customer. The PUD ‘Residential’ customer accounts outnumber the other industrial, commercial and irrigation accounts three to one. Did you know we ‘Residential’ customers pay much more for a kilowatt of electricity than the other PUD customers do? Why? Maybe because we do not complain about this inequity or we aren’t well represented at the rate hearings (bargaining table). Our PUD Commissioners need to hear from us. There is a rate setting meeting coming up on February 3 in Moses Lake. Please contacted the PUD at gcpud.or or at one of the rate hearing meetings and ask them to fix the disparity in the electricity rates. I think residential rate payers should get the lowest power rates of all the PUD customers, because we the people own the license for the dams and the power they produce.

DOGS

Reader questions dog shooting

The most unfortunate aspect of the tragic shooting of a family pet at Neppel Landing is that it was totally avoidable. There were errors of judgment on both sides. The owner, Mr. Criscuolo, should never have had his dogs off leash, because as this incident proved, you just can never know what may suddenly happen. However, this is not a mistake that should have cost the life of a beloved family pet. Deputy Beau Lamens stated that he had his K9 on a leash and so was in control of the police dog. Further statements by Officer Turley that said, “during standard protocol, when a drug dog is called on scene to work, there can be no other dogs in the area” so it truly begs the question as to why the office having noticed that there were not one, but two dogs off leash in the area, not simply put the K9, he claims he had under his control, back in the car until the situation could be properly managed? This was not a life or death situation until the lack of proper protocol and due diligence by the officer made it one. He is supposed to be trained to assess situations and act with public safety as a priority. He reported he fired his weapon not once but three times and only after the dogs were separated. Did he not have a Taser that could have been used instead? Did he not have enough control over his K9 that after the dogs were separated at that point, he or the other deputy could remove the K9 from the scene? It is not acceptable that this office chose deadly force as his only option in a public park when the situation clearly had other options.

POTATOES

Reader appreciates recipes

Thanks to the Columbia Basin Herald and Grant County Gourmet Dan Bolyard for running the great page of potato information and recipes prior to our annual potato conference. The accurate headline, “Potato recipes to help you reach your weight-loss goals,” and the wonderful variety of recipes that followed really nailed the message that potatoes are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Contrary to some current mythology that still exists, potatoes contain vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and they don’t make you fat. In fact, carbohydrates are nature’s way of fueling your body. If you don’t believe us, believe Apolo Ohno! Thanks again.

DOGS

Reader upset with pet's death

It was with horror that I read about the deputy sheriff killing Slyder last Sunday, Jan. 24. I have worked with Slyder’s owner, Nick, at Frederick’s Jewelry for several years. Slyder was at the store every single day that Nick was working. There was never a gentler dog. Everyone who entered the store, from toddler to oldster, adored him. He and Nick were bosom buddies who understood each other implicitly. Nick walked Slyder several times a day in the downtown area. There was never a problem with other animals on the street nor in the store. I am heartsick that this happened. I hope the Columbia Basin Herald will follow up and publish all the facts regarding Slyder’s death.

TEA PARTY

Reader displeased by manners

My wife and I met with six other members of our family for dinner out with one of our relatives that was passing through town. We decided to meet at Perkins restaurant. We were seated in the atrium area as there would be more room for us. We were rather displeased when we were blockaded by a group of about 35 people from the local contingent of the “TEA PARTY”. The wait staff worked really hard to accommodate these people even though several seemed to be quite demanding. The sad part was that of all those people taking space only four ordered a meal. The rest either had coffee or water. We found out that no notification of this meeting was given to the restaurant and that they had told the waitress there would only be a few people. We were looking forward to a nice dinner and conversation which became impossible when the meeting started. My point in this is if you are going to hold a meeting, it is only proper to contact the facility first and after the OK is given, you should at least plan on dining there. The “TEA PARTY” is supposedly trying to do things to bolster the economy. What they did to the people of Perkins and my family was thoughtless and rude.

Henry 'Hank' Rittierodt

Henry 'Hank' Rittierodt

Henry “Hank” Rittierodt died December 29, 2009, in Spokane, WA at the age of 90. His loving daughter, Becky, was at his side. Hank was born in State Center, IA, on September 21, 1919, to Henry and Alvina Rittierodt. He joined sisters, Emma (Fred Hepperle) and Margaret (Howard Strode). As an infant, Hank survived the famous 1919 flu epidemic that had earlier claimed his father and a sister. The family moved to Loyalton, SD, where, in 1935, he graduated from high school. Hank met future wife, Dorothy Hoey in Yakima, WA and they were married on Valentine’s Day, 1942. Married 66 years, he and Dorothy raised a family; son, Michael and daughter, Becky. They lived in Moses Lake and Kennewick, before moving to Wenatchee to care for relatives. Later in life, the couple enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Caribbean and, their favorite, Hawaii. Hank was a WWII Navy Veteran, serving at the Naval Air Station, Pasco and aboard ship in the South Pacific. A longtime resident of Kennewick, WA, he served his community in the Lion’s Club, Tri-City Country Club, the Elks, the Chamber of Commerce, the Transportation Club and Toastmasters. Living in Wenatchee, he enjoyed being a member of the Three Lakes Golf Club. He had a hole-in-one there and another while vacationing in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hank was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Becky Woodruff of Cheney, WA; and grandsons, Cody and Tyson. He also has a special cousin, Jack Durrett and his wife, Betty, who recently moved to Vancouver, WA. Hank was preceded in death by his son, Michael, who died of cancer at the age of 26; his love and soul mate, Dorothy, who died just ten months ago. He requested No Funeral and to be buried beside Dorothy and Mike, in Kennewick. WA. Graveside Memorial will be held Friday, January 22, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Riverview Heights Cemetery, in Kennewick, WA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any local animal shelter or rescue group. There are two Great Danes who sure miss their Grandpa. He always brought treats when he came to visit. Becky is forever grateful for the adventures they were able to share since her mother’s passing. A special thanks to Ernie for making the trip up the Palouse Falls Canyon a reality. Hank was a trooper, smiling the whole time, not easy, at 90 years old. He was diagnosed with cancer just 13 days before his death. He is loved and missed. Arrangements by Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee. THANKS

Reader appreciates support for MLTRT

On behalf of the Moses Lake Regional Tactical Response Team, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff of the Columbia Basin Herald, as well as the citizens of Grant and Adams Counties, for making our recent fund-raiser a huge success. Thanks to the efforts of your staff, particularly Tom Hinde and Jenna Erickson, we were able to raise over $2,500.00 which will be used to upgrade our armored vehicles. Local businesses graciously donated items for the auction, and our citizens demonstrated great support for the team, and local law enforcement in general, by making generous bids on the items. Recent tragic events in our state are grim reminders of the dangers faced by law enforcement today. Thanks to the support of our community, the members of the MLTRT will be equipped with additional tools to make us safer in our duties.

SEATTLE — U.S. House and Senate Democrats have passed two sweeping 2,000 page bills that would fundamentally and dramatically change our health care. There are significant differences between the two bills, but the more moderate Senate bill has the best chance of passing through the conference committee and being signed by the President. Both bills passed on a strict party-line vote, with essentially no support from minority Republicans.

Port commissioner endorses Moses Lake flights

GUEST EDITORIAL

I would like to start out by saying thank you to all the people who participated in the election and voted for me. It is because of you that I was able to take a trip to Seattle for a conference related to my new position as Port Commissioner. This trip was a novel and rewarding experience that I would like to share with all of Moses Lake. On November 17th 2009 I took my first flight with the United Express at the Grant County International Airport to catch the first flight of the day to Seattle. This being my first time ever flying I had a lot going through my head not really knowing what to expect. As I approached the TSA area the airline employees were very helpful and it was an easy and painless screening. While waiting to board the plane I could not help but notice how everyone around me was calm there was no anxiety, no rush, and best of all no hostility. This was definitely a pleasant experience.

FIREWORKS

Reader disagrees with ban

I believe that the person who said making the rule that fireworks in city limits are not allowed is just a very wrong thing to do. First of all, the entire firework show in town almost does more damage than civilian’s fireworks. Second, fireworks are plain fun in moderation so if people are a little more cautious then they will enjoy themselves immensely. That is all I have to say about the firework safety law.

Lawmakers aim at your gas tank

GUEST EDITORIAL

OLYMPIA — Some state lawmakers plan to hit petroleum producers with more than $1.2 billion in new costs over the next decade to pay for new water pollution programs.  If refiners are forced to absorb those extra costs, they will become job killers right in the middle of a recession.  If the industry passes the costs on to consumers, they will amount to a hidden four cent per gallon increase in our state’s gas tax – already one of the highest in the nation.

Wayne Douglas Gander

Wayne D. Gander, residing at the Pine View Alzheimer’s Facility and a former Cheney, Washington, resident died Wednesday evening, December 30, 2009, at the Hospice House in Spokane Washington.  Wayne was born at Leahy Junction, Northeast of Coulee City, Washington April 15, 1925 to Nathan and Claribel Gander. He graduated from Coulee City High school and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946. He spent his tour of duty at Fort Lewis, Washington.  Wayne worked for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in Ephrata, Washington and later as office manager in Othello. Resulting from budget constraints in 1967 the Othello ASCS office was permanently closed. After seventeen years of service there, Wayne embarked upon a new profession and moved to Cheney, Washington in February of 1968. He was the Farmers Insurance Agent for many years. He also worked full-time at Lakeland Village, and later retired from Eastern Washington University in 1987 as a janitorial supervisor. Wayne was an avid rock hound, and he spent much time digging for and discovering many interesting rocks from all over the country. He loved the outdoors and spent lots of time working in the yard and tending to the many varieties of flowers that he and his wife Agnes of thirty years loved so dearly. He and his present wife, Pat, have also had many memorable experiences for the past seventeen years traveling and enjoying their beautiful home and yard in Spangle, and in the Spokane Valley. Two years ago, Wayne and Pat moved to the Evergreen Fountains Senior Living Community in the Spokane Valley. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Virginia, and wife Agnes. He is survived by his wife Pat and her three children, Gary, Patti, & Bob; three children from a prior marriage, Lawana Sellers of Spokane Valley, Russell of Aurora, Colorado, & Jeff (Jonie) of Colbert, his brother, Willis Dodge, of Tacoma, three stepchildren, John Goodrich (Jan) of Liberty Lake, Jim Goodrich (Virginia) of Cheney, and Deborah Chittenden of Soap Lake, including many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. A Funeral Service was held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2536 North 6th, Cheney, Washington.
