MOSES LAKE — So close a should-have-been, instead a team was served a what-if.

The Moses Lake High School basketball team had a victory over the Big Nine Columbia leaders in Tuesday night’s game before letting the it slip though their fingers and metamorphosis into a 78-72 overtime defeat.

“It was a tough loss, the kids really wanted it,” Moses Lake coach Rolland Hansen said. “The kids played their hearts out tonight. We read Bill Walton’s article about cutting down the nets the practice before to get ready to do it after the game. The kids were up for it and they gave it all they got.”

Davis (10-2, 5-0) led 31-29 at halftime and built a lead of 47-37 after a 10-minute delay by referees to clear up an officiating error.

Still, the Chiefs (3-12, 3-3) fought their way back and managed to get their blood pumping again to trim the deficit to 52-48 after three quarters.

Moses Lake would take a lead of as many as four points before Davis made its push to force the extra session.

“A couple of turnovers and some missed free throws when they were fouling us to come back cost us,” Hansen said. “We were happy with the effort but we wanted to put them away bad. We thought we had them.

“They hit some tough shots to get it into overtime, it was impressive,” Hansen said. “They were making great shots over good defense. We had a hand in their face on those shots. The shot they hit from the corner we had him trapped and he jumped over the trap and made it. I was shocked.”

Moses Lake still had a chance to win it regulation but were called for travelling before a potential lay-up attempt was released.

In overtime, Davis built a 76-72 lead and Gabe Porter of the Chiefs would miss a three-pointer which would have trimmed the lead to one with 12 seconds left and the visitors pulled away.

Alex Todd led Moses Lake with 21 points and five rebounds, Tyler Raymond had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Porter registered 14 points and eight rebounds, Taylor LaGrave put in 13 points, while Jordan Wilks finished with 11 rebounds.

“We feel like we’re hitting the league in full stride and like I told the kids we have a chance to be peaking at just the right time before the playoffs,” Hansen said.

MOSES LAKE — Using a 14-0 first quarter run the Moses Lake Christian Academy Lions stormed to a 49-29 1B North Central Washington league win over Mansfield last night.

The Lions (9-3, 6-2) used a chest-to-chest, full-court man defense to harass Mansfield into numerous turnovers which were converted into steals during the game-momentum deciding first eight minutes.

“We’re trying to get back on track with winning defense because that’s what wins game,” Lions coach Duke Wood said. “If you can’t put the ball in the hole you got to play defense. Figured if we put some pressure on them and forced some steals and got some layups we could get a little lead.”

The Academy led 26-11 at halftime and the rout was in hand.

“We just have to be more consistent at defense,” Wood said. “It comes and goes and we are trying to make it continuous for four quarters.”

Jonny Roberts led the Lions’ attack with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocked shots.

“He played hard,” Wood said. “He was all over the boards and he got a lot of tips too that you don’t counts as boards. He hustled his butt off more offensively and defensively. He’s a senior and you want to play better toward the end of the year and he has been getting more consistent these last few games.”

The Academy’s Joe Timofeyev chipped in with 15 points, five assists, and five steals.
