Huskies gear up for Selah showdown

GRANDVIEW — With their eyes peering in the distance the Othello Huskies maintained focus on what was in front of them as they pounded Grandview in a 55-6 Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) match last night.

Four pin victories were recorded by Othello’s Gilbert Villa (103-pounds, second round), Bianca Mendoza (112-pounds, first round), Reuben Lopez (135-pounds, second round), and Eddie Garza (152-pounds, first round).

At 119-pounds Lucas Garza 20-10 decision, Joseph Gonzalez won 8-6 at 125-pounds, Matt Jordan recorded a technical fall at 130-pounds, and Eduardo Montes (140-pounds) took his match 11-4.

Matthew Melo (145-pounds) recorded a 10-2 major decision, Amando Deleon took a 18-4 win at 160-pounds, Daniel Walker squeaked out a 12-7 decision at 171-pounds and Joey Gomez (189-pounds) captured a key 6-0 match that could help him in district seedings according to Martinez.

Alberto Vargas wrapped up the scoring with a 10-4 win at 215-pounds.

The victory comes with one week remaining before Othello (8-0 in CWAC) host Selah Friday, Jan. 29, for the league title.

“We just wanted to pick up where we left off at Quincy since we know we have a big weekend coming up,” Othello coach Ruben Martinez said. “We were pretty pleased we were able to accomplish that.”

Two non-league duals are in the offing this weekend for Othello before they gear up for their Selah showdown.

“We have a good test this weekend against Riverside and Deer Park,” Martinez said. “There is no pressure on us we are just trying to get ready for Selah.”

Ephrata 47, Prosser 19

PROSSER — The Tigers of Ephrata recorded their second straight road win of the week with an emphatic 47-19 CWAC win at Prosser last night.

This victory follows up the narrow 37-36 win at East Valley on Tuesday.

Tigers Robert Motzkus (152-pounds) and Andrew Sconce (160-pounds) registered pin wins, while Ephrata’s win was aided by five forfeit victories.

Curtis Trieber took a 9-3 win at 189-pounds and Tyler Childs scored a 16-0 win at 119-pounds.

Kurt Nygard squeezed out a 1-0 victory at 140-pounds.

“I liked the way we came  forward tonight,” Ephrata coach PJ Anderson said. “We ended a long couple weeks tonight and now we can refocus for the post season. It’s nice to have a couple of win heading into this last part of the season.”

Ellensburg 42,Quincy 23

ELLENSBURG — A tough CWAC trip to Ellensburg resulted in a 42-23 loss for the Quincy Jacks last night.

At 103-pounds Christian Alejandrez took a 9-8 decision after falling behind 5-0.

Hector Avalos took a 11-7 decision at 112-pounds while Manny Ybarra claimed a major decision at 135-pounds, 10-0.

“Manny really worked and took him down in the middle of the first round with a near fall,” Quincy coach Greg Martinez said. “For Manny to record that decisive a victory over Colby Coats, he was on.”

Ben Horning won 5-2 at 152-pounds and Keaton Webley recorded a 16-5 major decision at 160-pounds.

“Our team wrestled aggressive and like they wanted to be on the mat,” Martinez said. “That old, scrappy team I used to talk about made an appearance tonight and it was nice to see.”
