Othello Huskies avoid 'attack' in one-point home win

OTHELLO — It almost gave their coach a “heart attack,” but Tuesday’s 30-29 win for the Othello Huskies over visiting Ellensburg was still good news for Ruben Martinez as his squad continues to pull out key victories.

“The last few weight classes were huge,” Martinez said. “We had a freshman at three and at nineteen and the kid at twelve has been out for six weeks due to a concussion and it was his first match.

“We got two wins and didn’t get pinned in the other and that helped us get the win. My heart was pounding.”

Anthony Barrera (103-pounds) won via a second-round pin, Gilbert Villa (112-pounds) nailed a second-round pin, and Lucas Garza (119-pounds) lost 15-7 but did well enough to keep the Huskies’ lead.

Othello (5-0 in Central Washington Athletic Conference)

Amando DeLeon (160-pounds) recorded a first-round pin and Matt Jordan (130-pounds), Matthew Mello (140-pounds).Reuben Lopez (145-pounds), and Eddie Garza (152-pounds) all won via decisions to aid in the victory.

Warden 51, Kiona-Benton 19

WARDEN — Five first-round pins were enough to seal the deal in the Warden Cougars’ 51-19 win last night against visiting Kiona-Benton.

The Cougars were sparked by Casear Rangel (130-pounds) Dakota Scott (171-pounds), Adam Hanson (189-pounds), Matt DeLeon (215-pounds), and Gerino Luna (285-pounds) who all recorded first round pins in the Warden victory.

Rangel pinned Roberto Palencia in 22 seconds.

Other results included Javier Tapia recording a second-round pin at 103-pounds, Scott Hendrickson won with a second-round pun at 140-pounds, and Hector Camacho gained a third-round pin at 145-pounds.

Kenny Sullivan scored a 10-4 win at 152-pounds for Warden who remain unbeaten in league competition.

Selah 55, Ephrata 14

SELAH — A tough trip to Selah ended in a 55-14 CWAC loss for the Ephrata Tigers on Tuesday.

Ephrata were pinned eight times in the loss.

Anthony Bush won by pin at 125-pounds, Kurt Nygard won 15-6 at 140-pounds, and Chris Trieber won 6-4 at 215-pounds to record the Tigers’ points in the dual match.
