Frustration growing after Seahawks stumble on defense
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — It's early but there is some clear frustration starting to show with the Seattle Seahawks. It's evident from the head coach. It's obvious from some veteran players. And none of it has to do with what most outsiders expected to be Seattle's biggest weakness entering the season — the quarterback.
Everything fabric focus of new Moses Lake shop
MOSES LAKE — If there is a needle and thread and material - doesn’t matter much what kind - involved, Sophie Mattson is pretty sure she can take it from there. “I’ve done a boat cover repair, I’ve done a golf cart cover repair,” she said Wednesday. “I did a chair repair today. And (the owner) was super stoked about that too.” “If it can be done on one of my machines, I’ll figure it out,” she said. Mattson and her husband Andrew are co-owners, with business partner Dave Johns, of Stitch N Time, 1626 W. Broadway Ave., Suite A, in Moses Lake. The shop opened July 1. Mattson said she’s still building her inventory, and for now the shop features a lot of quilting material; she also offers quilting classes. While quilting will always be a focus, Mattson already does more than quilting, and she said she plans to do a lot more.

First responders get soaked for Special Olympics fundraiser
MOSES LAKE — Renae Stott and her 3-year-old son Emmett came a long way to squirt water at an Othello Police officer Friday. “We wanted to see some police cars, get them wet,” she said as her son filled a large squirt gun. “We were hoping to see some fire trucks but we might have to come back later.” Residents of Othello, the Stotts stood in the parking lot of the Staples on North Stratford Road in Moses Lake while OPD Officer Tyson Cox stood atop a lift, his uniform soaking wet. Emmett squealed with delight as he charged the lift, squirting Cox as Cox returned the favor. “It’s for a good cause,” Cox said between squirt gun assaults. “It’s something that I’ve always had a passion to help out with.” ...

Grant Co. candidates face off in Mattawa
MATTAWA — The democratic process was on display Thursday evening, as candidates for countywide office faced off at Wahluke High School Thursday evening. The candidates forum, sponsored by the South Grant County Chamber of Commerce, Wahluke School District and the Wahluke Community Coalition and moderated by Columbia Basin Herald Managing Editor Rob Miller, included candidates for the office of Grant County clerk, sheriff and commissioner, as well as for Grant County Superior Court judge. Candidates were given a few minutes to introduce themselves, and then asked a set of pre-selected questions. Joe Harris and Joey Kriete, candidates for Grant County Sheriff, both discussed their long careers in law enforcement. Kriete has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 30 years, he said, both on patrol and running the Corrections Division. Harris has been in law enforcement for 20 years, he said, at the city, county and state levels, including serving as Mattawa chief of police. Both candidates agreed that response times needed to be improved. The trouble is, they said, Grant County is a very large area to patrol and respond to...
Growing business
Busy Moses Lake vet puts expansion plans into action
MOSES LAKE — When Dick Maier started Pioneer Veterinary Clinic nearly 25 years ago, he had more than enough space in the building he owns on Sharon Avenue just down the road from Moses Lake High School. “I built this clinic in 1999 and we moved in, in the fall,” said Maier, Pioneer’s owner and senior veterinarian. “I was a solo practitioner, I was the only doctor in this practice. This building was plenty big for me.” Three exam rooms for one doctor was more than enough room then, Maier said. However, he always had in mind the possibility of expanding his business in the future, so when he built his current building, Maier said he had the architect design it with additions and expansion in mind. Just in case. “We put it up as far on the front as we could, so we could push out back,” he said...
Quincy defeats Brewster 34-6 for second win
QUINCY — The Quincy Jacks football team evened its record at 2-2 with a convincing 34-6 win over the Brewster Bears Friday at the Quincy High School field. It was the first home win for Quincy in two years. “I thought it was a great group effort,” said Quincy head coach Russ Elliott. “The defense played really well, the offense got going - we had some great runs, and we threw the ball better tonight.” “They played sound fundamental football. And we did not,” said Brewster head coach Travis Todd. Quincy never trailed in the game, scoring first on a 35-yard touchdown run by Jackson Yeates with 11:21 left in the second quarter. The Jacks recovered a Brewster fumble and capitalized on it with a pass from quarterback Ethan Gregg to David Gudino that put the ball on the 2-yard line. Gregg scored from two yards out to put Quincy up 14-0 at the half. “I thought the kids came out and played hard from the start,” Elliot said. “We’d had an issue with that.” ...

Patricia Ann Trujillo
Patricia Ann Trujillo, 71, of Moses Lake passed away unexpectedly Sept. 9, 2022, at the hospital in Wenatchee, halfway through her first round of chemo and radiation. Patti grew up in Minnesota then moved to Moses Lake in 2000. Patti worked at Columbia Basin Herald for the last 21 years. When she wasn’t working she was spending time with family or friends, playing cribbage, having a barbecue or getting a Dairy Queen Blizzard. Patti had some health issues but in July 2022 she found out she had lung cancer. She was terrified because she had seen her own daughter fight and lose a battle to cancer in 2005, but she was determined and ready to fight. Sadly, her heart just wasn’t strong enough.

MOSES LAKE — They came from all over to share memories and see old friends. “We call ourselves the Spirits of ’62 because we are very spirited,” said Marilynn Hansen, a member of the Moses Lake High School Class of 1962 and one of the organizers of the class’s 60th reunion gathering last week. “We've had a reunion every five years since our 30th.” Wednesday, Sept. 14, found them gathering in the Moses Lake Civic Center — a building designed by Seattle-based architectural firm Miller Hull, whose founding partner Robert Hull grew up in Moses Lake and graduated from MLHS in 1963 — to swap stories and renew old friendships and spend some time together. “Tonight we’re expecting about 50 or 60 people,” Hansen said. “A lot of us went to kindergarten together.” ...

The photo reportedly shows Bergman at an ATM machine, though the GCSO did not say when or where the photo was taken, noting only that it is recent.
