Quincy defeats Brewster 34-6 for second win

QUINCY — The Quincy Jacks football team evened its record at 2-2 with a convincing 34-6 win over the Brewster Bears Friday at the Quincy High School field. It was the first home win for Quincy in two years.

“I thought it was a great group effort,” said Quincy head coach Russ Elliott. “The defense played really well, the offense got going - we had some great runs, and we threw the ball better tonight.”

“They played sound fundamental football. And we did not,” said Brewster head coach Travis Todd.

Quincy never trailed in the game, scoring first on a 35-yard touchdown run by Jackson Yeates with 11:21 left in the second quarter. The Jacks recovered a Brewster fumble and capitalized on it with a pass from quarterback Ethan Gregg to David Gudino that put the ball on the 2-yard line. Gregg scored from two yards out to put Quincy up 14-0 at the half.

“I thought the kids came out and played hard from the start,” Elliot said. “We’d had an issue with that.”

Brewster pushed the ball deep into Quincy territory about halfway through the third quarter, and the Bears were on the 4-yard line when a shotgun formation snap went awry and the ball got past the Brewster quarterback. The ball was scooped up by Quincy’s Noel Ruiz, who returned it 96 yards for the touchdown to put Quincy up 21-0.

The Jacks scored again on their next drive, when Yeates got around the end, cut back about halfway to the goal line and scored on a 45-yard run. Quincy missed the extra point but the touchdown gave them a 27-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.

With the Jacks sideline chanting “defense,” Quincy held Brewster on fourth down at Quincy’s 12-yard line early in the fourth quarter. After Quincy took the ball back Yeates went around the end again, was nearly caught at the sideline, evaded the tackle with a 360-degree spin, and got to Brewster’s 11-yard line. David Gudino caught an 11-yard pass from Gregg to push Quincy’s lead to 34-0 with 10:34 left in the game

Brewster scored on a 34-yard pass with 6 minutes left, but the try for two points was no good.

Quincy had not scored in its first two games, and had not won a game for two years before beating Tonasket on Sept. 16. In the last two games, the Jacks scored 68 points and pushed their record to 2-2.

“It feels great,” Gudino said of Quincy’s resurgence.

“We could get used to it, right?” Elliot said.

The hard work the team has put in has helped lay the groundwork for the current, and maybe future, success, Elliot said.

“We just keep grinding, and working through the process, and see what happens. The kids are responding, the kids are working hard, and they’re starting to overachieve,” Elliott said.

Quincy opens Caribou Trail League play Friday against Cascade (Leavenworth) in Leavenworth. Elliot said he thinks the Jacks can keep improving if they keep doing what they’re doing.

“We just have to play hard,” he said. “The kids are believing, they’re working really, really hard in practices, and practices have been great. And it’s paying off, just like it always does.”
