Mid-Columbia Symphony opens 2018-19 season
RICHLAND — The Mid-Columbia Symphony opens its 74th season with a concert commemorating the 100th birthday of American composer Leonard Bernstein Sept. 8. All four concerts in the 2018-19 season are at Richland High School, 930 Long Ave. in Richland. Bernstein’s most famous work is “West Side Story” and the concert will include the symphonic dances from the classic Broadway musical. The program also includes the overture from Bernstein’s operetta “Candide” and” the short piece “Slava,” written in tribute to cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. The concert finale is Bernstein’s First Symphony, “Jeremiah,” with mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski as the soloist. “Landmarks” is the theme of the 2018-19 season, and it includes plenty of landmark music from landmark composers. The Nov. 10 concert focuses on a landmark city, Rome, with excerpts from “Tosca,” Puccini’s opera set in the time of Napoleon. The program also includes the suite from the movie “La Dolce Vita” by Italian composer Nino Rota, and “Pines of Rome,” by Ottorino Respighi. Guest vocalists and the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers will join the orchestra. “Last Works” are the program for the Jan. 27 concert. It features last works from English composer Benjamin Britten (“Welcome Ode”) and Lili Boulanger (“D’un matin de printemps”), a French composer who died at 24 years of age. The “London” symphony, the last work of Franz Joseph Haydn, is the concert finale. Soprano Molly Holleran and the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers Youth Chorus will be the guest soloists. The season finale, June 1, is a performance of Symphony No. 7, the “Leningrad” Symphony, by Dimitri Shostokovich. The symphony is most famous for the performance in August 1942 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), which at the time was surrounded by Nazi German forces and had been under siege for about a year. The orchestra will host a debut concert March 23, with the musicians to be determined. The music includes Symphony No. 4 by Johannes Brahms and “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by American composer John Adams.

Royal preparing to win another 1A state championship
ROYAL — The road to the state football championship goes through the three-time state champion Royal Knights (41), who roll into the 2018 season on the nation’s sixth longest winning streak, coming off their third consecutive 1A state championship. Take a good look now while the South Central Athletic Conference East standings read zero’s across the board and the teams are listed in alphabetical order, because that’s the furthest down the list the Knights, who have not lost since the 2014 state quarterfinals, will be. Washington Coaches Association Hall of Fame coach Wiley Allred tells his guys every year, “We’re not trying to repeat, we’re just trying to win a state championship.” They’ve bought in and this year’s team is preparing to win the final game of the season. The challenge every year is to establish an identity with the current chess pieces, Allred said. “Every year we search for excellence and every year the kids have something to prove,” said Allred, who was the Don Shula high school coaches award national runner-up in 2017. “The kids work really hard to be their best, which is something we strive for every year.” They lose 17 seniors, including SCAC player of the year Corbin Christensen, who caught a touchdown pass and had a pass interception in last season’s state championship game. But they return a core group centered around quarterback Sawyer Jenks. Where there was a little bit of mystery going into last year with Sawyer taking over for older brother Kaden Jenks, who’s now vying for the starting job a Weber State University. Sawyer threw five touchdown passes in his first game as the starter and finished the season 149-of-249 for 2,790 yards and 40 touchdowns with just four interceptions. This year, there is no doubt Jenks is the triggerman for one of the most explosive offenses in the state. The offense averaged 56.6 points a game in 2017, backed by a defense went into the championship game allowing just 3.46 points a game with eight shutouts in 13 contests. “Sawyer has improved. He’s stronger and more familiar with the system,” Allred said. “If you can run the ball and throw when you want, that’s been a pretty successful formula for us.” The Knights return leading rusher Alonso Hernandez, who carried 24 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the state title game and finished the regular season with 1,111 yards on 157 carries with 16 touchdowns. The also return junior Lorenzo Myrick (76-for-694) and sophomore Tucker Janett (16-for-155). With Christensen (16 touchdowns) gone, they will be looking for a new scoring leader. Angel Farias returned four punts for touchdowns and will get his chance as the primary receiver. He finished the regular season with 28 receptions for 640 yards and seven touchdowns. They expect to bolster their receiving corps with Myrick at the slot receiver this year as well. “Every year we have to develop the kids to get it done at the level we want to play at. We have the kids that make ya look pretty good as a coach and we try to add to that,” Allred said. The beat goes on on the Royal Slope. The Knights open the 2018 season with 2A Ellensburg at home on Aug. 31. They play at 2A Othello on Sept. 7, then host Waluke (Sept. 14) in the first SCAC East game, before finishing out the non-league schedule at Okanogan (Sept. 21). “We expect Connell to be tough as always in our league. I’m not real sure what Warden has, but I’m sure they’ll be tough,” Allred said. “We’ll just do what we do to get ready. “But I do think our schedule is going to be more difficult this year, especially with the non-league games.”

Vote on new Grant PUD class scheduled for Aug. 28
EPHRATA — Grant County PUD commissioners will approve, reject or send back for more work a proposal for a new “emerging industries” rate class at the Aug. 28 commission meeting. Opponents and proponents of the new Class 17 had something to say about the proposal at the commission’s Aug, 14 meeting. The proposal was prompted by a flood of requests for service in summer and fall 2017, and been the subject of exhaustive study. Many requests came from people in the cryptocurrency industry, which uses relatively new technology to process transactions and information. That led PUD employees to propose a separate class for businesses using new technologies - or new kinds of businesses - which includes an assessment of risk. The resulting proposed rates are higher than the existing Class 1 and Class 7, where most of the businesses are now. Utility district employees are recommending that the rates be phased in over a three-year period for existing customers. Emily Smith, representing the Grant County Economic Development Council, said the council was in favor of the new rate class. “We strongly support the immediate implementation of Class 17,” Smith said. Grant County has missed out on opportunities for new business due to the uncertainty over the power supply and cost, Smith said. Jeff Bishop, executive director of the Port of Moses Lake, cited businesses that had considered locating in Grant County but in the end had gone elsewhere, one to Portland and another to Georgia. Bishop said the uncertainty around electrical supply also is affecting the decisions of businesses that want to expand in Grant County as well. Port of Moses Lake commissioner Kent Jones said in his opinion the uncertainty has had a negative effect on attracting and retaining business. Current cryptocurrency owners protested that the Class 17 rates were too high, and had suggestions they said would alleviate some of the risk for PUD. Jonathon Toomin had a proposal for revised rate class, suggesting an upfront yearly fee and a curtailment policy. Aiden Kilek proposed letting the existing customers stay in their current rate class and adding a premium for risk factors. Brian Snyder said he thought the Class 17 proposal was flawed, putting unprecedented rate increases on Class 17 customers. He asked why existing cryptocurrency customers couldn’t be left alone; they are no threat to other customers, he said.

Winds, humidity make it smokier
MOSES LAKE — The old saying about an ill wind is really true - slightly more humid weather and lighter winds are helping firefighters on fires to the north of Grant County. But the humidity and northerly winds are keeping smoke closer to the surface all over the region. Currently fires are burning near Entiat, along the Methow River near Winthrop and near Kettle Falls. There are also wildfires burning across British Columbia. The combination of winds and humidity is making it smoky all over Washington. That has pushed the air quality index into the “unhealthy” range in Grant County and throughout the region. The Washington Department of Health recommends staying indoors, curtailing any strenuous physical activity outdoors and closing windows and doors. Air conditioners should be set to recirculate air. The National Weather Service has posted a red flag warning for Sunday night and Monday morning. North winds will increase, “the strongest push of northerly winds experienced so far this summer,” according to a press release from the NWS office in Spokane. The wind will be accompanied by low humidity, which will increase fire danger.

Swine competition keeps competitors busy
MOSES LAKE — It was that tricky moment in swine competition, when the pig is either on its way to the ring or on its way back to the pen. Pigs in transit roam the aisles of the barn, and sometimes pigs have a mind of their own. The pig was on its way back from competition, and just would not go in the pen, to the visible frustration of its owner. Adults and other kids tried to help, and finally the pig had enough. Squealing and snorting the pig tried to make a run for it, scattering people as it ran - a 200-plus pound pig in motion is a lot of pig. But in the end its attempt to escape led right to its pen. It’s like that in the swine barn. Swine competition is one of the more popular at the Grant County Fair. The swine barn is bustling all day long, with pigs, with exhibitors and their parents, with 4-H and FFA leaders. Kids don’t just drop the pig off at the barn and stop by once or twice a day - far from it. All exhibitors must pull barn duty. And pigs need some babysitting. It being August, it’s hot, and pigs don’t do well in heat. “They can’t sweat, so if you don’t keep them cool they overheat,” explained CJ Schultz, Ephrata. For CJ that means a spray bottle and pig-sitting, squirting his pig (and his sister’s) regularly when the temperature starts to climb. The barn is an open-sided building, but it does have a cooling system. A swamp cooler, fans, misters, all designed to keep the pigs cool. Some kids add their own fans and that helps, said Jaiden Hill, Quincy. And what are the characteristics of a prizewinning pig? “You want them short, you want them to have wide shoulders, a wide back and big butt,” CJ said. “It really helps to pick a good pig from the start,” Jaiden said. She takes pictures of prospects, front and back, on her phone and analyzes them before making her purchase. The best pigs have “good hams and good shoulders,” she said. After that, it’s a matter of maintaining the good start. “Feed them lots of protein. I’ll feed mine eggs,” Jaiden said. Wednesday was market competition, with fitting and showing Thursday. The fair continues through Saturday.

Othello School Board forms committee to study space needs
OTHELLO — Othello School District patrons are being invited to join a committee to look at the facility needs of the district and make recommendations how to address them. District superintendent Chris Hurst said a plan to convert the district’s elementary schools to kindergarten through eighth grade will be suspended while the committee does its work. People who want to serve on the committee should contact the district office. The committee was proposed by Othello School Board member Tony Ashton a special meeting Aug. 4 to review a report on the space that would be needed for the transition and its potential cost. Hurst, speaking at Monday’s regular board meeting, said the information caused district officials to review their planning. The estimate was about $32.6 million. Not all of that was for the K-8 transition, Hurst said; it included costs for other changes district officials plan to make. But however it’s allocated, “that is a big price tag that would have to go to our community, our voters, for a potential bond in the future.” In addition, the estimate only included current students, with no provision for growth. In light of that, “we’re reflecting, we’re taking a step back - we really want to pause, just the conversation,” Hurst said. “We wholeheartedly believe in direction and the work that’s happening here,” Hurst said, with teachers and staff in support of the district’s direction. But “we realize we did have to pause. Which is an opportunity.” Hurst said it gives district officials time to talk to district patrons about the proposed changes. “How do we get others involved? How do we bring more people to the table?” The innovations won’t succeed without community support, he said. The committee will be a maximum of 25 people, including a maximum of five people with kids (or grandkids) in school and a max of five district patrons without kids in school. If more than five people apply, the committee members would be chosen by lottery. The committee will also include one teacher from each school; to be nominated by the school staff; two school board members, two high school students, a representative from the city of Othello, the superintendent, a second central office administrator chosen by its staff, and one principal or vice-principal from a school, chosen by the other administrators. The committee will be asked to determine what the district’s facility needs are, focusing on the next five years. Board member Ken Johnson said he thought district officials needed to take a longer-term look, at least 10 years out. Ashton said, and Johnson agreed, that could be the work of a second committee, after the first committee’s job is finished. The committee members will set a timetable to report to the board, and will be asked to meet twice a month until they come up with a recommendation. Board members are asking for at least two options.

Moses Lake Grange No. 1151, chartered May 31, 2017, would like to thank the local companies for all their donations that allowed them to install the seed display booth at the Grant County Fair. The weekend before the fair, ten members collaborated harmoniously to place the seeds, creating the unique display that can be seen in the agriculture building. Matt Manweller: a great professor and a great representative
My favorite class during my time at CWU was by far my American Political Thought and Culture class with Matt Manweller. He used a variety of teaching techniques to reach students, we played games, listened to music, and were encouraged to bring in material from our lives that represented American Political Culture. Manweller isn’t partisan in class. While students know his personal political views because he’s a state representative, he’s not a professor that preaches his personal politics to his class like so many other professors. In one of his classes we read a book by well-known liberal commentator Chris Matthews, “America: Beyond Its Grandest Notions.”

Making Moses Lake a rodeo town
Every picture has a story
One of America’s status symbols is a home with a beautiful bluegrass lawn. It is a necessity for children and pets in town. Many people do not realize the steps it takes to produce the seed for this beautiful lawn. The farmer must first have the land available, decide a year in advance if bluegrass seed is needed by the consumer, is it profitable for him to grow and will it fit into his crop rotation schedule. Only select growers are given contracts to grow bluegrass seed in Grant County. The USDA writes up the BMP (Best Management Practices) rules the grower must obey and the Department of Ecology issues burn permits based on a daily scientifically researched national weather forecast.

Kelowna shells AppleSox 15-1
KELOWNA, B.C. - The AppleSox scored just one run on 10 hits in a 15-1 loss to Kelowna on Tuesday night in West Coast League action. It was a must-win situation for Wenatchee (26-27-0), which was trying to keep its WCL playoff hopes alive. Wenatchee won the series opener on Monday to move to half-a-game out of first place with a 7-4 victory over the Kelowna Falcons on Monday night at Elks Stadium. Thanks to Yakima Valley’s fourth loss in the last five games and the Sox’ fourth consecutive win, Wenatchee is now less than a game out of a playoff spot. But they couldn’t find the same mojo on Tuesday. JT Schwartz was 3-for-4 and scored Wenatchee’s only run. But it it was Kelowna, all night long. The Falcons (27-26) took a seven-run lead in the fifth and broke it open with a four-run seventh. The two clubs wrap up the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, beginning at 6:35 p.m. at Elks Stadium.

Moses Lake Toyota dealer offers great service
My two sons are getting ready for their senior year at Eastern. They drove to Wenatchee over the 4th while my wife and I were on vacation in Oregon to retrieve an old Toyota pickup and a bed full of furniture for their apartment. The pickup’s engine blew as they were exiting I-90 to SR 17 for gas and they coasted into the truck stop at Kittleson Road. It was late Friday afternoon and they found there was a Toyota dealer only a short distance away. They towed it there and with the mechanics gone for the weekend, Kim, the service manager, said they’d keep it in the covered shop and see what was broken on Monday. The boys headed for Cheney and Kim called Monday with the bad news - no compression in two of its four cylinders. Getting my pickup to Moses Lake fell to my wife and Kim had her staff move the furniture to my truck which delivered the load to Cheney. It was going to be another week until I’d be free to take my RV to Moses Lake and tow the dead Toyota back to Wenatchee. Again Kim said she’d have it moved outside in a secure location. I showed up last Tuesday. Kim had her staff push the pickup onto the dolly I rented and refused any compensation for what she had done for us. She said, “they are great kids but they don’t have money to burn and I’ll keep my eye out for a used engine!”
