Margaret A. Smith

Margaret A. Smith was born on Feb. 12, 1939 in Concordia, Kan. to George and Elizabeth Stevenson, their eighth of nine children. She passed away on July 24, 2018. Margaret graduated from Warden High School in 1957. She was the mother of five children from her first husband, Ruben E. Valdez. She married her second husband Carl Smith in 1990 and they lived in Moses Lake, Wash. until his death in 2005.

Margaret loved spending time with her family and friends. She was always up for outings, especially if shopping was involved. She was an avid collector of things, especially carousel horses, costume jewelry and rosaries. She was an active parish member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Moses Lake . She moved to Spokane in May 2015 to Brookdale South Hill on 57th to be closer to her daughters and to receive better medical care. During her last few years, she made many new friends and would frequently stop to say hello or to introduce herself, spreading joy to those she met. She loved playing bingo and was a regular winner, winning her last prize on Sunday, July 22, 2018.

Her son Richard J. Valdez and her husband Carl Smith predeceased her. She is survived by four of her children and a daughter-in-law Ruben D. Valdez (Dorothy), Joseph G. Valdez (Daisy), daughter-in-law Sharon Valdez, Kim R. Weller and her fiancé Bill Heath and LaRayne Gonzalez (Carlos); seven grandchildren Guinevere (Matt), Daniel, JoAnna (Nick), Christinea (Brandon) Dylan, Noah, and Justin and five great-grandchildren Sarina, Alexander, Logan, Jeremiah, and Liliana.

Her family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care she received from the caregivers at Brookdale South Hill on 57th over the last three years and the nurses from Horizon Hospice for the last few months of her life.

Margaret’s funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church located at 3520 E. 18th Ave, Spokane, Wash. on Friday, Aug. 3, 2018 at 12 p.m., with a rosary prior to the mass at 11 a.m. and a reception immediately following the funeral Mass in St. Peter’s parish hall. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens located at 9934 Rd. U SE, Warden, Wash. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady of Fatima located at 200 N. Dale Rd., Moses Lake, Wash.
