Zags announce signing of Ismaila Diagne

SPOKANE – The Gonzaga Bulldogs added seven-foot center Ismaila Diagne to its 2024-25 men’s basketball team, the school announced in a release on Tuesday. Diagne, a native of Nguekhokhe, Senegal, signed a financial aid agreement to attend Gonzaga University. This past season he averaged 10.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and .9 blocks per game for Real Madrid’s Under-18 team, helping guide his team to the Adidas Next Gen Tournament championship in Berlin. During the Podgorica Tournament in 2023-24, Diagne averaged 11 points and 7.8 rebounds over a four-game stretch. Diagne played four games with the Real Madrid national team in the Spanish Liga Endesa, averaging five points on 58% shooting from the field, 4.5 rebounds an one block in 12.5 minutes per game. He also played two EuroLeague games with the national team.

Grant Co. Democrats announce contest winners

MOSES LAKE — The Grant County Democrats have announced the winners in their second annual Candy Count game. The game took place at the Democrats’ booth at the Grant County Fair. Contestants were invited to guess the number of candies in a jar. The container held 297 candies, according to an email from Grant County Democrats Vice Chair Jill Springer Forrest. Leo Dabalos guessed the closest at 296. Dabalos won the jar of candy as well as a four-pack of Super Soaker water guns. Second place went to Clorissa, whose last name was not given. Third place winner was Logan Myers, fourth was Analia Valdez and fifth was Angelo Adams. The contest garnered hundreds of entries and was a huge success, Forrest wrote.

GCSO identifies driver, victims in fatal crash

MOSES LAKE — Investigators with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office have determined who was driving the vehicle during a single-car accident on July 30 west of Moses Lake that left one person dead and three injured. According to a GCSO statement, investigators determined that Kari S. Ortega, 22, of Moses Lake, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier west on South Frontage Road near Hiawatha when she failed to negotiate a curve. That prompted her to lose control of the car, which rolled several times and ejected all four occupants. The GCSO said Armando D. Lopez of Quincy died at the scene, while Christopher Rios Chavez, 18, of Quincy, was admitted to a Spokane hospital for treatment, as was an unnamed 14-year-old girl from Quincy, who has since been admitted to a rehabilitation center for treatment of her injuries. In its post, the GCSO said it continues to investigate the accident.

OLYMPIA — Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing the U.S. Postal Service for deciding in February to replace up to 165,000 USPS vehicles with gasoline-powered models rather than with electric vehicles. Ferguson, who has filed suit against the Postal Service in U.S. Court in California, said the decision by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy violates the National Environmental Policy Act by failing to do a proper environmental review of the purchasing decision and examine alternatives, according to a press release from the attorney general’s office...

Powerball at about $400M

OLYMPIA — With no matching winning numbers following Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, the Powerball jackpot has reached roughly $400 million — the biggest jackpot since January, according to Washington’s Lottery. The next Powerball drawing is set for Saturday, April 23, at 7:59 p.m., with Powerball tickets on sale until 6:45 p.m. the day of the drawing. The Powerball drawing has not been won since Jan. 5, when the prize was $632 million. Tickets are $2 each, and can be purchased at locations across the state. To play, players pick five numbers between one and 69 and one final Powerball number between one and 26, or they may use Quick Pick and let the computer pick their playing numbers. Established in 1982, Washington’s Lottery has generated over $4.5 billion in support for college scholarships and early childhood education and assistance programs, according to a state lottery press release.
