Ephrata author’s children’s book celebrates rescued pets

EPHRATA — Denver Morford is just wild about Harry. And Charlie. Morford, the former owner of Barry Chevrolet in Ephrata, recently published “Two Goofy Dogs,” a children’s book about his experiences with two pooches named Charlie and Harry. Morford had always liked golden retrievers and found them to be well-behaved and trainable. “They were grownups,” he said. “They were mature animals that didn't require a leash. I taught them hand signals so that … I could run my business and they wouldn't be in the way.” Then in 2016 his wife Sarah Morford - who also serves as the public information officer for the Ephrata School District - brought home Charlie, an English cream golden retriever, and everything changed...

Softball tournament set to 'cap' summer season

MOSES LAKE – The Summer Sizzle softball tournament will return to Moses Lake this weekend, giving teams a chance at a final tournament during summer ball. “It’s the off-season, pretty much everybody has done their state tournaments, their national tournaments, so what we try to do is put on a little fun tournament to put a cap on the whole (summer),” Tournament Director Willie Holmes said. Holmes said that most of the teams that participate in off-season tournaments are travel teams, who are taking a look at their rosters for the next season. “Also, it gives coaches on the travel teams a chance to try out new players and get an idea what they’re going to have for the coming season,” Holmes said. “Not everybody has the tendency to play softball and practice year-round now.” To help coaches with this examination process, the Summer Sizzle features alternated rules allowing more players to enter the game...

Tigers sweep in season opener

EPHRATA – The Ephrata Tigers opened the 2022 campaign with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-10) sweep over Cascade (Leavenworth). Coming off an appearance in the 2A state tournament, the Tigers look to stay their momentum entering a new season. “(It feels) good,” head coach Britney MacLeod said of the season-opening win. “We’re coming off of a really strong team, strong season last year. They did a good job.” After Ephrata scored on the opening rally, the Kodiaks bounced back, taking a 4-2 lead. Once the set was tied at six, the Tigers went on a six-point run to double Cascade. Ephrata never looked back, eventually winning the first set 25-14. “We made some mistakes, we made the mistakes we thought we were going to make, but it feels good for them to settle in and know they can do it,” MacLeod said...

Farmer Consumer Awareness Day returns to Quincy

QUINCY — A parade, antique tractors, a car show, a quilt show, a memorial for military veterans and games for children are among the events - but by no means all the events - scheduled for the 41st Farmer Consumer Awareness Day Saturday in Quincy. “A lot going on, oh yes,” said FCAD President Wyman Duggan. Farmer Consumer Awareness Day started as a way to show consumers the contributions made by farmers, and that’s still FCAD’s foundation. Bierlink Farms and its owners will be recognized as the farm family of the year, and a longtime community volunteer, the late Grace Kok, will be honored for her contributions to Quincy. Kok was named the honorary farmer of the year. “She did many, many, many things for this community,” Duggan said...
