Monday April 1st is the Annual "April Fools Opener", with a couple dozen lakes becoming available to anglers in the Columbia Wildlife Refuge. This region is dotted with lakes that are spread across the high desert from Potholes Reservoir down to Othello. Many of the lakes are managed for trout and offer great fishing in the spring, whole others are excellent spiny ray fisheries.

The Fishin' Magician: Family fishing derbies

Fishing families can participate in a couple of fishing derbies in our area this spring. The tagged trout derby at Burke Lake on Saturday, March 3rd is the first where big cash prize and other items can be won by those who fish in it. There are really fun, free events for kids in the month of April that I will be telling you about in future reports, and then a brand new derby is going to be held at Bridgeport on Rufus Woods Reservoir.

Reader pleased with yard waste program

On Wednesday 10/19/11, the Moses Lake city yard waste chipping machine and crew ran 125 feet of branches from several households through the machine. These were on the street in front of my house and the lot next door. This is a very valuable service by the city as it enables those of us that have large trees to have the branches removed. We wish to thank the city for providing this service once in spring and once in fall, which I believe was initiated by Dick Deane several years ago. In addition, I wish to compliment the city for the very fine statues in the downtown area. I think the statues are really attractive and represent the athletics of this city very well. I understand that Don Garrett of the Parks and Recreation Department made them.

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

I mentioned earlier that there was good trout fishing at Lake Roosevelt, so I just had to go and try it myself. I took my time getting up there and when I was set up on the beach at Spring Canyon, it was already past 12:30. I rigged two rods and began to cast off the shore.
