He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He married Ione Zimbelman on Nov. 21, 1953, in Odessa and this is where they made their home for over 55 years.

She was born on March 18, 1932 to Ernest C. Smith and Nellie B. Smith at their home in Kent, Oregon. She has an older sister, Joyce Short and husband Wallace Short, and a younger brother, William C. Smith and wife Elaine Smith. Mother went to see her Savior May 16, 2012 surrounded by most of her family. She had suffered a long illness of chronic leukemia until she succumbed to the illness. Jack and Virginia were wed on May 1, 1948 in Goldendale, Washington. After dad's passing, they had been married 58 years. Mom was a farmer and realtor for over 40 years. She was a wonderful wife and mother.

He was preceded in death by his father Dean in 1941 and his mother Lillian in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lenora A. Evans, daughter DeAnn Scanlan of Ephrata, son Dean Evans III of Moses Lake, daughter Dawn Prince of Ephrata, daughter Carol Ruele of Twin Falls, ID and brother Donald Evans of Port Angeles, WA. He is also grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
