Moses Lake High School theater troupe to present ‘Mamma Mia!’
MOSES LAKE — The curtain goes up on a tale of lost love, family complications and a wedding on the beach as the Moses Lake High School Theatre troupe presents “Mamma Mia!,” opening Friday. Sharon Winningham, drama advisor and director, said the musical has established itself as a classic. “It is a beloved musical,” Winningham said. “The kids are excited. The parents are excited. There’s just something special about ‘Mamma Mia!,’” Winningham said. “‘Mamma Mia!’ is that show that they grew up on.” The 1999 play is based on the music of the Swedish pop group ABBA, whose songs were part of the soundtrack of the late 1970s. It’s the story of Sophie (Ruby Nishida in the MLHS production) who’s about to get married. It’s all good – her mom Donna (Calissa Dalton) approves of her choice – but there’s a little bit of a glitch.

Quincy Hardware and Lumber offers friendly variety - and furry friends
QUINCY — Quincy Hardware and Lumber owner Tina Stetner - along with Sophie the dog, because Sophie is part of the crew at QHL - greeted a couple of customers who walked in on a Wednesday morning. “You guys need anything?” Stetner asked. “We’re just doing a little shopping,” one of the customers replied, while the other had spotted Sophie. “Is that a store dog?” the second customer asked. “They have a store cat, too,” the first customer said. Cheeto is the cat, and he was sleeping in the basket at the top of his cat tree, right next to the rack of sun hats. And the sun hats are right across the aisle from the box of flip-flops, which are right across the aisle from the display of power tools. Quincy Hardware and Lumber is the sort of store that has a little bit of everything...

Everything fabric focus of new Moses Lake shop
MOSES LAKE — If there is a needle and thread and material - doesn’t matter much what kind - involved, Sophie Mattson is pretty sure she can take it from there. “I’ve done a boat cover repair, I’ve done a golf cart cover repair,” she said Wednesday. “I did a chair repair today. And (the owner) was super stoked about that too.” “If it can be done on one of my machines, I’ll figure it out,” she said. Mattson and her husband Andrew are co-owners, with business partner Dave Johns, of Stitch N Time, 1626 W. Broadway Ave., Suite A, in Moses Lake. The shop opened July 1. Mattson said she’s still building her inventory, and for now the shop features a lot of quilting material; she also offers quilting classes. While quilting will always be a focus, Mattson already does more than quilting, and she said she plans to do a lot more.

School choice surges in Washington state and beyond
School choice is the term for giving families the ability to choose the school that is the best fit for their child. Families with economic means already enjoy school choice. They can afford private school tuition or homes in districts with good schools. Other families must accept the public school they have been assigned by zip code, even if the school is overcrowded, unsafe, or failing at the task of educating children. School choice programs give families various options and tools so they can direct the education of their children.
