Ag markets posted mixed closes ahead of Thursday's USDA reports
Traders were looking forward to Thursday’s USDA reports Wednesday. Expectations for a massive corn harvest have weighed heavily upon the market this summer. However, the possibility that tomorrow’s USDA Crop Production and WASDE reports will hold surprises apparently spurred short-covering ahead of their release. Thus, corn futures traded slightly higher. December corn futures closed up 1.5 cents to $3.4575/bushel Wednesday, while May rose 1.25 to $3.6675.
Ag markets moved mostly lower again Wednesday morning
Corn futures resumed their post-report decline Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s USDA reports implied record U.S. corn yield and harvest totals this fall. Futures reacted poorly to the news and couldn’t sustain overnight efforts to stabilize. Indeed, early morning announcements of fresh export sales also failed to push prices higher. Traders think the USDA forecasts are too low. September corn dipped 1.75 cents to $3.5675/bushel late Wednesday morning, while December lost 1.25 to $3.6775.

Ag markets flailed around with little net movement Friday morning
Corn futures began Friday on a firm note. The annual USDA report on farmer enrollment in subsidy programs was published early this morning. They enrolled 83.322 million acres of corn, with 1.54 million classified as ‘prevent planted.’ Nearby futures rose modestly in response, since the indicated acreage totals seemed surprisingly small. September corn gained 4.0 cents to $3.66/bushel around midsession Friday, while December climbed 4.5 to $3.78.
Soy futures continued boosting crop prices Wednesday morning
The soy complex continues pulling crop prices higher. The corn harvest may have been slightly delayed by the latest Corn Belt weather system, but there’s little doubt it’s advancing rapidly. Nevertheless, CBOT futures are rising again today as talk of torrid soy demand sends that complex higher (and pulls the other crop markets upward in concert). December corn futures rose 3.75 cents to $3.6825/bushel late Wednesday morning, while May added 3.5 to $3.9025.

Large fall harvest prospects are exerting general pressure on the corn market, but concurrent slippage in the soy complex is also weigh on grains today. A late statement from the U.S. Grains Council argues that China’s forthcoming rule on DDG imports is unworkable; that may also be weighing on prices. September corn dipped 1.25 cents to $3.6025/bushel around midsession Friday, while December sagged 0.5 cent to $3.69.

That is, the anticipated freeze line on the weekend weather forecasts moved northward, thereby reducing the potential damage to the corn and soybean crops. December corn futures fell 7.75 cents to $3.4825/bushel at their Monday close, while May lost 7.25 to $3.695.

Corn futures are rallying Tuesday morning. Monday’s weekly USDA Crop Progress report stated the corn harvest as being just 31% complete, which apparently sparked a corn futures bounce from their overnight decline. Prospects for fine Midwest weather for harvesting through the end of the month may be limiting gains, but bulls are probably being joined by technicians. December corn futures rebounded 6.5 cents to $3.5475/bushel late Tuesday morning, while May climbed 6.5 to $3.77.

Corn futures followed the soy markets higher. The prospect of a huge fall crop has badly depressed corn futures, but prices rebounded in concert with the soy complex Monday. Talk of surging export demand for soybeans and dryer August weather is apparently supporting the markets. Traders were probably disappointed by the Export Inspections result, but futures acted well anyway. September corn gained 4.75 cents to $3.5775/bushel at their Monday close, while December rose 5.0 cents to $3.7675.

Grain traders are probably squaring positions Monday morning. The corn market has recently suffered badly from prospects for a huge U.S. harvest and from U.S. dollar strength. Today’s Export Inspections result also looked rather bearish. Nevertheless, futures rose modestly this morning, which probably reflected widespread short-covering ahead of tomorrow’s quarterly Grain Stocks report. December corn futures gained 1.5 cents to $3.245/bushel in Monday morning action, while May bounced 1.25 to $3.455.
