No house? No problem: Vacant land selling well in the Basin
MOSES LAKE — More people in the Basin are opting for land over houses these days, according to real estate professionals. “(People think) it’s a lesser cost (if) it’s got power and services nearby,” said Johnny Reyes, an agent with Windermere in Ephrata. “Slowly, over a year, two years, three years, they’ll put the services into the property and then they’ll put a home on it. They’re trying to save a little money that way. Also, there are people who are more inclined to live out in the country (for) a little bit more privacy.”

111th graduating class strolls out in style in Ephrata
EPHRATA — About 200 students strolled, cavorted, lightsaber-battled and marched their way onto the Ephrata High School football field last Friday evening. Some wore honor cords showing accomplishments, some had decorated mortar boards and others a look of relief that their day had finally come. Student speaker, Charles Flynn, a graduating senior and outgoing Associated Student Body president, thanked the teachers, staff, parents and others who’d helped him and his classmates reach their educational and other goals. “I would also like to thank the class behind me,” Flynn said while at the podium, facing the gathered audience. “Many of us have grown up with each other since grade school, making mistakes and maturing from them along the way, staying up late to complete work, then waking up early to turn it in, going to football games and bonfires. All of these moments have given me the utmost confidence in the class sitting behind me. Today is not merely a heartfelt goodbye, but it is also a new beginning.”

CBTECH students headed to national competitions
MOSES LAKE — This isn’t exactly the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center’s first trip to the nationals. “For 11 years straight we have placed at state competition, and eight of those years we’ve qualified for nationals,” said Terri Pixlee, who teaches video game programming at CBTECH. “We’ve been all over the country. We’ve been to Chicago, Utah, Georgia twice, Florida (and) Maryland and this will be our second time in California.” Pixlee’s students Alex Meyer, Hailey Harper and Ethan Huntley competed in April at the Future Business Leaders of America game programming competition in Bellevue, she said. One team of three students took second place and will go on to nationals in Anaheim, California. Another team of two, Neri Hernandez and Jaden Salazar, placed seventh, not high enough to be assured of a berth but enough to be alternates in case some other Washington team doesn’t show. So far, that doesn’t seem likely, Pixlee said.

Moses Lake Woman’s Club may be few, but they’re making a difference
MOSES LAKE — There may be strength in numbers, but sometimes those numbers are small ones. “We gave 600 diapers, plus other items (to New Hope),” said Margaret Schiffner, president of the 10-member Moses Lake Woman’s Club. “We donated 30 packs of baby wipes and over $273.” The club has had a relationship with New Hope for many years. The signature project for the nationwide General Foundation of Women’s Clubs is domestic violence, and local clubs partner with local domestic violence advocacy organizations. The diaper drive in March was part of a statewide effort by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Washington state, in which more than 12,000 diapers were collected by 24 clubs statewide with a total membership of 303.
