WSU academic student employees vote to form union

PULLMAN — Graduate and undergraduate teaching and research assistants at Washington State University are seeking to form a union. In a petition filed with the Public Employment Relations Commission, graduate teaching assistants are also seeking to includes students who work as tutors and graders, collectively known as academic student employees, according to a press release from the United Auto Workers. The group is seeking to be recognized as a new bargaining unit. Washington State University is the only major public research institution on the continental West Coast that doesn’t have a union for student employees, the press release said. The new union would represent about 1,600 members, according to the press release.

Vekich appointed to Maritime Commission

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Longshoreman and former Washington legislator Max Vekich has just been sworn in and the newest member of the Federal Maritime Commission, according to a press release from Sen. Maria Cantwell. According to the press release, Vekich in the first maritime commissioner to have served on the International Longshore and Warehouse Union’s executive board and is also the first from Washington state. With Vekich’s swearing in, Democrats now hold a majority of seats on the Federal Maritime Commission, the news release said. The commission is responsible for regulating agreements between exporters and shipping companies, according to the press release. The U.S. Senate confirmed Vekich to the post in a 51-43 vote in February, Cantwell’s office said.

Enrollment deadline approaching for WA college savings program

OLYMPIA — The annual enrollment period for people who want to start a 529 education savings plan will end May 31. The Guaranteed Education Tuition plan allows families to buy tuition units that can be used in the future to pay costs associated with college or post-secondary training. The current price is $114.01 per unit, and people have until June 25 to buy units at that price and add them to an existing account, according to a press release from WA529. The funds can be used to pay for college tuition, trade school fees and other expenses associated with post-secondary education. They can be used at most four-year universities, technical schools, community colleges or other continuing education institutions around the country.

Two injured in Mattawa area accident

MATTAWA — Two people were transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland after the semi one of them was driving ran off the road and rolled off the highway about 12 miles south of Mattawa Thursday morning. Brandi Miller, 27, San Antonio, Texas, was driving south on State Route 243 about 7 a.m. when she ran her truck off the road, according to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol. She overcorrected and the truck rolled, the memo said. Both Miller and her passenger, Zechariah Tuttle, 37, Springfield, Missouri, were injured. Miller was wearing a seatbelt, but Tuttle was not, the memo said. Miller was charged with driving with the truck’s wheels off the roadway.

USBR to finish Grand Coulee firehouse

GRAND COULEE — The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced Thursday it has reached an agreement to finish construction of the Grand Coulee Fire Station following two previous contract terminations with construction companies, according to a USBR press release. Division Street to close intermittently starting Monday

MOSES LAKE — If your commute takes you along Division Street in Moses Lake, you will be facing some delays caused by construction over the next two weeks, according to an announcement from the city of Moses Lake. City crews have already been busy replacing sewer lines underneath Sixth Avenue, and will move the work on Division Street beginning Monday, April 4. The work is expected to go on for about the next two weeks. The construction work means lanes of traffic will be blocked off and detours posted, the city said in a statement on its website. This project is part of a series of sewer replacements and upgrades that have kept city crews busy in and around the center of town for nearly a month and was budgeted at around $437,000.

I-90 work extended through Friday near Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE — Work on westbound I-90 exits in and near Moses Lake is slightly behind schedule and has been delayed, with exit closures slated for Friday, according to a statement from the Washington Department of Transportation. According to WSDoT, the contractor for the project will close westbound exit 169 at Hiawatha Valley Road and westbound exit 164 at Dodson Road from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both exits are expected to open to traffic again by Friday evening. Work on the Hiawatha Road exit was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was delayed due to planning issues that put the work on westbound exits between mileposts 164 and 175 days behind. The roadway is being resurfaced near the two affected intersections.

Ephrata man injured in one-vehicle rollover

RITZVILLE — An Ephrata man was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane after he rolled his car near Ritzville Tuesday night and was ejected. Ricky Bensch, 59, was driving west on Interstate 90 about five miles west of Ritzville at about 8:15 p.m. when he drifted into the median, according to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol. Bensch overcorrected and rolled into the north embankment, the memo said. Bensch was transported to East Adams Rural Healthcare in Ritzville, then to Sacred Heart. Greg Riddell, WSP public information officer, said Wednesday afternoon that Bensch was reported to be in stable condition. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, Riddell said.
