Paula Garza
Paula Garza was born on June 18, 1930 in San Benito, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Felipe and Petra Garza and was called home by her Creator on her 83rd birthday, this past Tuesday June 18th at home surrounded by her family and relatives. Paula was the youngest of 11 siblings: Ignacia, Inez, Agapito, Pablo, Jose Marciano, Tomasa, Canuto, Alberto, Juan, and Timoteo. On February, 1947 Paula married Porfirio Garza. Together they had 12 children. The family migrated from Mexico to Bishop, Texas following agricultural seasonal jobs. From Bishop to the Yakima Valley in Washington and then to Moses Lake which became their permanent home.

Chicken wings are a big item these days. You see them on just about any menu and they are served at just about every bar. Usually with some sort of hot and spicy seasoning. Orders of the wings are served with a creamy dip, such as ranch, to help tame the hot sauce.

Wanda Faye Davis
Wanda Faye Davis passed away on February 7, 2014 after a year long battle with leukemia. She was born in Dallas, Texas on November 18, 1946. She is survived by her husband Mike Davis, daughters Paula, Debra and Kristy, 5 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. Wanda married Mike Davis in 1986 in Moses Lake, Washington and immediately began enjoying watersports, skiing, golf and camping. She was a member of Moses Lake Golf and Country club where she became totally hooked on golf. She continued this love when living in Spokane and was an 18 year member of Wandermere Golf course womens club. In Spokane she became known for her love of cooking and hosting parties for her friends. She became an avid and accomplished landscaper and had a beautiful park like yard and garden. She and Mike fell in love with Gonzaga womens basketball and were season ticketholders for years. In 2013 while undergoing chemotherapy she never missed a game and even went to Las Vegas for the WCC basketball championship tournament.

Pot roast, New England boiled dinner and more
I’d been reading about cooking meats in a boiling liquid lately and I figured it would be time for me to revisit the subject. The biggest challenge I’ve got with cooking meats this way is that the seasonings get diluted with the large quantity of liquid, versus other cooking methods. Plus, I like to brown my meats and veggies to get extra flavor out of them, while boiling them in some fashion would not be as flavorful, at least in theory.

Adventures in biscuitmaking
Last week I had been speaking with a food broker and he had brought up the subject of beer bread, having had some amazing stuff from a place in Wenatchee. I suggested an easy way to make some would be to use a commercially available biscuit mix, but just replace the liquid with beer.
