Ephrata schools to move forward with spring levy election
EPHRATA – The Ephrata School District Board unanimously approved a motion to run an Educational Programs and Operations levy on the Feb. 2025 ballot. The levy is not a new tax but instead will replace the 2021 voter-approved levy which will expire in 2025.
Adams County 2024 election results certified
RITZVILLE — With the final results in, about 64.99% of eligible Adams County voters cast ballots in the 2024 general election. The results were certified Tuesday. That’s lower than county turnout in the last two presidential elections. Turnout was 76% in 2020 and 72.6% in 2016.
Construction begins on Ephrata’s first water tower
EPHRATA – After a long-anticipated wait, Ephrata moved its new water tower project forward Saturday by pouring 15,120 yards of concrete and laying around 67,800 feet of rebar to make the tower’s foundation.

The meeting ended with a farewell to Board Director Anita Waller who has resigned her position to focus on personal matters.
Ferguson names leaders for three state agencies
OLYMPIA — Governor-elect Bob Ferguson selected leaders of three state agencies Wednesday, according to an announcement from Ferguson’s office: Marcus Glasper as director of the Department of Licensing; David Puente Jr. as the director of the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Cheryl Strange as acting secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services. Strange formerly served as Secretary of DSHS from 2017 to 2021. Marcus Glasper has been serving as the director of the Department of Licensing since April 2023, according to the announcement. In his role at DOL, Glasper serves on the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission and the Transportation Economic and Revenue Forecast Council. Glasper has over 30 years of public sector experience, and prior to his appointment at DOL, he served as the director of the Washington State Lottery for five years. He has served the public in a variety of Washington State executive leadership positions including Deputy Director at the Department of Revenue and Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Department of Corrections. Prior to his state service, he spent a decade working for the United States Department of Energy.

She was born in Bremerton, Wash., on July 27, 1950, to her parents, Robert Dale White and Getrude Sadie White. The family moved to Moses Lake in 1966 where Kathy graduated from Moses Lake High School in 1968 and completed one year of college at Big Bend Community College.

Rail, airfield improvements planned at Grant Co. International Airport
The Port of Moses Lake is projected to spend about $8.8 million for its operations and wastewater treatment facility in 2025 and generate revenues of about $9.38 million. Port commissioners approved the 2025 budget Monday.

Itchy cows to blame for several power outages
WINCHESTER – There have been multiple intermittent power outages between Nov. 13 and Nov. 18 between Quincy and Ephrata. The Grant Public Utility District began investigating the outages which were impacting the Winchester area with patrols searching for the problem. After several days of searching and a two-night investigation, the district believes it has discovered the culprit – itchy cows.

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Winter Wonderland market was held Saturday at the Grant County fairgrounds, allowing locals to shop for holiday gifts and perhaps a fresh-baked scone or two. Turnout was good with Columbia Basin residents mingling and getting a chance to visit with Santa.

MOSES LAKE — Nance Beston has always loved finding out things and telling stories. “My grandma got me a camera when I was really young,” Beston said. “And as soon as I got that camera, I harassed everyone to get their photos, including random strangers. At a certain point, my dad no longer allowed me to bring it to the store, because I was taking pictures of random people and they were not happy.”

EPHRATA – Two Moses Lake men were booked into Grant County Jail Thursday night for suspicion of second-degree trespassing on private property near Ephrata, according to a statement released from Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Regional parks district approves first-ever budget
QUINCY — The Quincy Valley Regional Parks District is projected to generate about $4.5 million in revenue and spend about $2.08 million in 2025. District commissioners approved the district’s 2025 budget Tuesday. All the district’s income in 2025 will be its property taxes. Commissioners also approved a resolution authorizing the collection of property taxes for 2025. Property owners will pay 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to the district.

Othello sewer rates to increase
OTHELLO — Othello residents will see their sewer rates increase by one-half of one percent each year over the next three years. The rates became part of a discussion of current and future needs during the Othello City Council meeting Nov. 12. The rate for 2025 will be $65.42 per month for a single-family residence in the city limits. Owners of a single-tenant commercial building will pay $65.42 for the first 1,000 cubic feet of wastewater, and $2.64 for every 100 cubic feet of water in excess of that.

Moses Lake tree lighting kicks off the holiday season
MOSES LAKE — Downtown Moses Lake blazed into light Friday evening as the enormous holiday tree in Sinkiuse Square was lit to mark the beginning of the holiday season. About 500 people came to the event, said Mallory Miller, executive director of the Downtown Moses Lake Association, which staged the event. In addition to the tree lighting itself, there were craft tables and a scavenger hunt for the kids and hot dogs and hot cocoa for everybody. The turnout was bigger than last year, said volunteers Jesseanne Polmateer and Mason Golliher, who were handing out fliers for the scavenger hunt. There were about 300 people at the end of the night last year, Golliher said, and within the first half hour they had already given out more than 100 fliers.
WSU raises tuition as enrollment declines

Consultant to be hired to examine Othello pool

Fentanyl report shows drug's impact on Central WA

MLPD arrests 19 in prostitution crackdown
MOSES LAKE -- The Moses Lake Police Department Investigations unit with the support of Othello Pollice Department conducted a three-day human trafficking operation. The three-day operation was designed to impact both the demand and supply side of human trafficking. There were a total of 19 arrests with 13 of them for patronizing a prostitute and the other six for prostitution.

EPHRATA — A Grant County Public Utility District project that has been in the works since 2000 is about five miles from the finish. The last piece of the PUD fiber optic buildout is projected for completion by early December. The last section under construction is along Johnson Road Northwest, west of Soap Lake. SPOKANE – Nicholas Andrew Anardi, 33, of Moses Lake has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison after setting off an explosive device. Chief Judge Stanley A. Bastian of the U.S. District Court Eastern Washington District also imposed three years of supervised release following imprisonment in Anardi’s case.

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Farmers Market is having its first harvest market this Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Grant County Fairgrounds in the Commercial building. “At the (regular season) market we try to really focus on the farmers and the produce that we have at the market. So that’s our main focus. It’s a farmer’s market after all,” Moses Lake Farmers Market Treasurer Katie Laine said. “I would say our off-season markets, they’re a bit different. It’s more of a craft market. We do have some produce there. We do have a couple of farmers who still have produce (to sell). Socktober drive brings in 1,300 pairs of socks
MOSES LAKE — Some feet will be warmer this winter in Moses Lake. A whole lot of feet, in fact. Greenpoint Technologies and Red Door Cafe’s joint project, Socktober, brought in 1,300 pairs of socks last month, according to an email from organizer Amy Ward. This is the first year that Moses Lake has done Socktober and the response was overwhelming, said Phyllis Lavalle, Ward’s mother, who helped her count and package the socks Nov. 8. The drive was given a big boost by Bombas, a nationwide clothing retailer that specializes in socks.

COLUMBIA BASIN — Home sales were up in October statewide, according to data released by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, but a mortgage rate hike and rising prices fueled uncertainty in the market. Closed sales increased 11% between September and October 2024 in the 26 Washington counties the NWMLS tracks. In Adams County closed sales doubled, from six in September to 12 in October, and in Grant County the number stayed steady: 75 sales in September and 74 in October.

Growing up in Peshastin, Washington, she looked up to her two big brothers. In her early years, she spent her summers at Camp Zanika Lache. She graduated from Peshastin-Dryden High School in 1961 and went on to graduate from Central Washington University in 1966.

Wide-ranging discussion on taxes, revenue by Moses Lake council
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake City Council approved a 1% increase in its property tax assessment Tuesday, but not without a wide-ranging conversation about taxes, revenue and city projects. The vote was 5-2 with council members Deanna Martinez and Don Myers voting no. City Finance Director Madeline Prentice estimated the increase would add an average of $68 per year to the tax bill for property worth $300,000. Along with the 1% increase, that includes an estimated increase in assessed property value in the city and what Prentice called “banked capacity.”
Moses Lake 2025 budget projected at $119 million
MOSES LAKE — The city of Moses Lake is projected to spend about $119.62 million in 2025, an increase of about $13 million from 2024. That includes an increase of about $8 million in capital projects. The preliminary budget was presented to the Moses Lake City Council at its regular meeting Tuesday; city residents will have a chance to comment on it during a public hearing at the Nov. 26 council meeting. Balancing the 2025 budget will require a transfer from the city’s reserve funds. City Finance Director Madeline Prentice said during the budget presentation that the projected city revenue is about $107 million. That will require the transfer of about $15.87 million from the reserves to balance the budget.
Port of Ephrata passes budget, updates on new fuel
EPHRATA – The Port of Ephrata Commissioners met Tuesday night to pass its 2025 budget including the tax levy. The board also discussed the Jet-A fuel project and the annual track inspection.
Soap Lake City Council calls special meeting
SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake City Council is calling a special meeting this Friday at 5:30. The agenda for the meeting includes an executive session for current or potential litigation. The meeting will be held at the Soap Lake Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center at 301 Daisy Street North as the Soap Lake Community and Senior Center, where the council normally meets, is booked for another event. The Columbia Basin Herald will have an updated story after the meeting if action follows the executive session.
Ephrata High School expands parking lot from donations
EPHRATA — The Ephrata High School received an upgrade to its softball and soccer parking lot. Tommer Construction and Stevens Hay donated $25,000 in labor and supplies to expand the lot and make it more accessible to families and fans. "We are incredibly grateful to Tommer Construction, Stevens Hay, and the Enforcers Softball Program, whose connections helped make this project possible," said Bryan Johnson, Ephrata High School Athletic Director. "Their generosity has provided a much-needed upgrade that will make the complex easily accessible to more people. This donation also allows the district to allocate resources that would have been used on this project toward other initiatives that directly benefit our students."

YAKIMA — No. 13 seed Soap Lake opened the 1B State Volleyball Tournament with a win over No. 20 Pe Ell, advancing past the loser-out game with a 3-0 sweep of the Trojans. “They were ready to go,” Soap Lake Head Coach Niki Noble said. “They wanted to come out and win and show that we deserved to be placed where we are. Have a strong game and a strong win.” The Eagles jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, headlined by a 6-0 scoring run; after doubling up Pe Ell with a 16-8 lead, the Trojans cut the lead to 18-12 late in the set. Following an ace by Soap Lake junior Mylee Dana, the Eagles scored the set's final five points to win 25-12, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
$3,300 in grants to go to various Grant Co. school districts
GRAND COULEE — The Friends of the Lower Grand Coulee have been awarded classroom grants for the 2024 to 2025 school year. Each year the FLGC awards a minimum of ten teacher classroom grants with the help of North Central Education Foundation. The grants so far total $3,300 and will assist Soap Lake School District, Ephrata School District, Moses Lake School District and Quincy School District. The funding will help support around 200 students, according to a statement from the FLGC. The activities funded include a Colville Tribes field trip, a study of history, culture and importance of salmon habitat, butterfly life cycle, plant growth in partnership with Washington State University Master Gardener Outreach, rover exploration missions and more.
Moses Lake resident booked for alleged sexual assault of a minor relative
MOSES LAKE — Jason Klein, 34, Moses Lake resident was booked into Grant County Jail on several charges related to sexually assaulting a juvenile relative over several years, according to a statement from Grant County Sheriff’s Office. Klein was booked for charges of second-degree rape of a child, two counts of third-degree rape of a child, commercial sexual abuse of a minor and first-degree incest. GCSO detectives were notified by the 15-year-old victim Nov. 1, and a search warrant was served to Klein’s home. The detectives found evidence corroborating the victim’s statements and Klein was booked on the allegation.

John Dailey Pryor, 85, of Moses Lake, Washi., passed away Nov. 7, 2024. Born on Sept. 4, 1939, to Delbert Pryor and Viola Beck in Indianola, Okla., he was the seventh born of 11 children. John's early years were marked by a trajectory from a cotton picker in Oklahoma to a skilled jet engine mechanic at Larson Air Force base where he served honorably from May 2, 1957, to May 1, 1961. Following his military service, John's career path led him through various industries, including working at Moses Lake Feed Mill, U&I Sugar, AAA Ready Mix, local dairies, McAtee & Heath and as a lounge manager.

Kristen Lynn Vedder unexpectedly passed away due to complications from an ongoing battle with cancer Nov. 6, 2024, at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, Wash. She was only 53 years old. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden death. Kristen was born on Aug. 22, 1971. Kristen is survived by her parents, Timothy A. Vedder II and Debora K. Vedder, and forever remembered by her siblings, Tim Vedder III, and his wife, Shari Vedder, Matt Vedder and his wife, DeAnn Vedder, Cindy Hawk and her husband, Martin Hawk, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Kristen was preceded in death by her grandparents Tim and Bette Vedder of Chewelah, as well as John and Beverly Murphy of Spokane.

MOSES LAKE – The Rotary Club of Moses Lake has opened their scholarship application for the 2025-26 school year. The Rotary Club in the spring awarded $75,000 in scholarships. The scholarships are open for three groups of people: students graduating from Big Bend Community College wishing to continue their education towards a bachelor’s degree, students enrolled at BBCC who graduated from a high school in the BBCC service area pursuing certification in a Workforce Education Program and high school seniors graduating from a high school in the BBCC service district of Grant and Adams counties wishing to pursue training leading in certification in a Workforce Education career.
Eagles reach state tournament for second straight year
SOAP LAKE — After defeating Entiat in the Central Washington 1B district tournament on Saturday, the Soap Lake Eagles will return to the 1B State Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive season. The Eagles bested the Tigers 3-1 in the district consolation bracket. “We were really excited,” Head Coach Niki Noble said. “Not only did we win when it counted – we got second in districts, and that was the first time that I as a coach have beat Entiat and the first time that any of these girls have beat Entiat.” Soap Lake had lost to the Tigers twice already this season; a 3-2 road loss on Oct. 3, and a 3-1 loss in the semifinals of the district tournament on Nov. 5.

MOSES LAKE — Dietrich and Emma Thiesfeld’s 14 children could just about constitute an army in themselves. “Seven of them are or were veterans, and the other seven married veterans,” said Leland “Lee” Thiesfeld, 84 and the 10th of those children, who served in the Marine Corps in the early 1960s. Lee and his wife Charlene live in Moses Lake, where they raised their four children, one of whom followed his father into the USMC. Some of those overlap, like Lee’s oldest sister Elverda, who both served in the Navy and married a Marine, he said. Between the siblings and their children, the Thiesfeld family tree holds 24 military vets. Ironically, their father Dietrich never served, Lee said. “In the First World War, he got an exemption for farming,” he said. “He had to help on the farm. In those days, 60%, 70% of the population was farmers. Nowadays it isn’t even 10%.”

SOAP LAKE — War is hell, it’s often said, and soldiers who get hurt or killed in action are rightly honored for their courage and sacrifice. But recently the U.S. Congress honored another group whose courage sometimes goes unnoticed. Operation Dustoff, the collective name for the medical teams who evacuated the wounded from the battlefields of Vietnam in helicopters, was honored in September with the Congressional Gold Medal. One of those men was Glenn Knight, who now lives in the Lakewood area of Soap Lake. “A Dustoff crew was made up of two pilots, a crew chief and a medic,” Knight said. “I was a medic.”

MARDON — As the water temperature drops crappie begin to form large schools under and around the MarDon dock to gorge themselves on the minnows that have summered here. The MarDon Resort dock has been a destination for fall anglers for many years now. Last week our dock provided dozens of anglers with near limits of crappie daily. Targeting crappie off the dock can be tricky. Start tying on a 1/64 Trout Magnet jig head, then tip it with your choice of a silver and black Bobby Garland Baby Shad or a 1.5-inch Watermelon Pearl Berkley Gulp Minnow. This set up can be fished vertically, tight-lined or under a slip bobber. To access the MarDon dock, you must be a registered guest of the resort and have a dock pass.

MOSES LAKE – After 52 days of striking for a better employment contract, 59% of more than 26,000 Machinists Union members voted in favor of a fourth contract offer made by Boeing. “While the past few months have been difficult for all of us, we are all part of the same team,” said Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg in a statement released Monday evening. “We will only move forward by listening and working together. There is much work ahead to return to the excellence that made Boeing an iconic company. This is an important time in our history, and like generations before us, we will face into the moment together, and stronger as one team.”

Outreach part of removing homeless encampment
MOSES LAKE — The removal of a homeless camp in Moses Lake was preceded by about a month of contact and outreach with its residents. The camp was located on private property on North Block Street. Moses Lake Police Captain Jeff Sursely said it was removed at the request of the landowners, Maiers Enterprises LLC.

HARTLINE — Grant County Fire District 6 covers 232 square miles of Northeastern Grant County with a population of a little over 2,200. That means resources can get stretched a little thin, said Charles Erickson, a fifth-generation farmer in the Hartline area. “For the most part, we’re all farmers out here, and a lot of times, I can be 12 miles north and two miles away from my pickup, and when the call comes out, it’s going to take me 10, 15 minutes to get back to my pickup and then another 10, 15 minutes to get into town,” Erickson said. Erickson – he’s equally at home being called “Charlie” or “Chuck” – is a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician who also serves on the fire commission for GCFD 6. That makes him both Fire Chief Daryl Dormaier’s subordinate and one of his three bosses, which Dormaier is just fine with.
