Maverick boy’s XC qualifies for first state meet
MOSES LAKE – For the first time in program history, the Moses Lake boys cross country team will pack their bags for state after the Mavs finished with a score of 86 points in Thursday’s Columbia Basin Big 9 District Meet at Franklin Park in Yakima, a top-two placement that qualified them for the 4A state meet. “We’ve come so close to getting into state before, and then when we started researching, no Moses Lake team has ever qualified,” Moses Lake head coach Larry Dagnon said. “Some had been there when it was the University of Washington Invitational from 1959-64, but in 1967 that’s when teams started to qualify.” ...
Basin XC teams compete at Highlander Invitational
MOSES LAKE – The Ephrata Tigers, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague Broncos, Moses Lake Mavericks, Quincy Jacks, and Warden Cougars cross country teams met with over 50 other schools at Shadle Park on Saturday for the Highlander Invitational. “We did really well,” said the Mavs’ head coach Larry Dagnon. “Our athletes showed up, they raced, there were a lot of big schools there and we just came in and we had a lot of athletes break school records and just run pretty well.”
Mavs cross country ready for more this season
MOSES LAKE – After a storybook season, the Mavericks cross country team is ready to go farther this season, Head Coach Larry Dagnon said. “Last year was a monumental season. Honestly, not only was it monumental for how the team did, but just having sports was monumental,” he said.

Mavs fall to West Valley in regular-season finale
MOSES LAKE – The Mavs will now have to play on the road in next week’s 2023 Columbia Basin Big-Nine tournament, having fallen to West Valley (Yakima) 7-0 and 5-1 in Friday afternoon’s doubleheader. Moses Lake was charged with 10 errors across both games on Friday, allowing the Rams to score runs and build leads in both games.

GEORGE – The 33rd annual Moses Lake Cross Country Invitational was held at The Gorge Amphitheater on Thursday, giving runners from across the state the opportunity to trek through the hilly terrain of the music venue.
Gonzaga men’s XC reaches No. 12
SPOKANE — Gonzaga's men's cross country enters this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches' Poll ranked the highest ever in program history, coming in at No. 12 after a strong outing at the Cowboy Jamboree over the weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Zag men finished 10th overall with 245 points en route to beating six ranked teams in the most competitive meet so far in the NCAA this season. Yacine Guermali led the way for Gonzaga with a 15th place individual finish in a time of 23 minutes, 42.6 seconds over the 8,000 meter course on the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.

MOSES LAKE – Cross Country teams from around the Columbia Basin had a busy weekend with Lind-Ritzville, Othello and Wahluke going to the Max Jensen Invitational and Quincy going to the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational. The Moses Lake Mavericks split their team between the two meets.

MOSES LAKE – On Thursday, the Mavericks (2-0) hosted Sunnyside and were victorious 3-2 in a competitive game. The Mavs host Davis on Sept. 16 at Lions Field with a 6 p.m. start.
Jr Mavs play in first home game of the season
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Jr Mavs football teams took to Lions Field on Saturday to play in their first home game of the season. “It was a great effort and great play across the board,” said Tyson Olson, president of the Moses Lake Jr Maverick Football program. “That’s what we told our seventh-grade team and I know it was echoed across all of our teams that we were really pleased with everybody’s efforts across the board, not just the ones that got to start, but also coming in off the bench. Everybody stepped up and played really well.” The full day of football started with the seventh- and eighth-grade teams facing off against the Kennewick Jr Lions with the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teams playing in the afternoon against the Ephrata Jr Tigers.

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks Girls Golf team finished fourth overall Tuesday afternoon in their league tournament at Moses Lake Golf and Country Club. “All in all, I thought the girls did pretty good and I’m real proud of them,” said Mavs Girls golf coach Kevin Whittall.
Late goal seals fate for Mavs
MOSES LAKE — While the Mavs and Rams remained tied at one through most of the second half, a late West Valley (Yakima) goal sent the Rams into the next round of the Columbia Basin Big 9 district tournament, ending Moses Lake’s season. “We worked hard, looked like we wanted it, we just couldn’t string the passes together unfortunately,” Moses Lake coach Alysha Overland said. After a fast start to the first half for the Mavs, West Valley tied the game in the 34th minute after a through ball got past the Maverick defense, and following a pileup in front of the Moses Lake net, was shot in past the keeper for a goal.

MOSES LAKE – Last weekend, 16 Moses Lake Mavericks cross country runners travelled to Irvine, California, for the 44th Woodbridge Invitational Classic. Head Coach Larry Dagnon said it was a significant milestone for the Moses Lake High School squad. Five athletes walked away having earned hardware.
