Most ag markets rose in concert with equities Thursday

The crop markets exhibited surprising strength Thursday. Overnight grain weakness seemed to reflect bearish equity market expectations, as well as an acceleration of the fall harvest as the Midwest dries out. But the corn market rebounded by midmorning, which probably reflected a sizeable sale announced earlier, as well as the late-morning stock market comeback. December corn futures settled up 4.75 cents to $3.5225/bushel Thursday afternoon, while May moved up 4.75 cents to $3.7425.

Grain, soy futures easily outperformed livestock & cotton Friday

The grain markets followed soybeans higher Friday. Little fresh news concerning corn emerged Friday, although strong export demand was rumored. Still, grain market bulls were clearly encouraged by the big soybean sale announced this morning. The strong U.S. Employment report was also encouraging, but the fact that it sent the dollar to fresh five-year highs may have limited gains. March corn futures closed up 5.25 cents at $3.95/bushel Friday afternoon, while July gained 5.25 to $4.10.

Chinese news is affecting the crop markets early Friday morning

China’s interest rate cut is weighing on crop futures. Thursday’s export news was quite supportive of the corn and soy markets and powered sizeable gains. However, the crop markets are suffering a relapse in the wake of early-morning news that China’s central bank is cutting interest rates. That implicitly lowered the value of its currency and boosted the U.S. dollar, and reduced the potential for export sales to that county in the short to intermediate term. December corn futures slipped 2.0 cents to $3.7125/bushel Thursday night, while May lost 2.25 to $3.9275.

Ag markets began Wednesday's trading in mixed fashion

Favorable conditions continued depressing corn futures Tuesday night. Although China announced overnight that it will increase its domestic grain storage capacity by 50 million tonnes, that apparently did little to support corn futures. Prospects for a bumper autumn harvest reportedly dragged yellow grain prices lower once again. July slid 2.5 cents to $4.405/bushel early Wednesday morning, while December declined 2.75 to $4.38.

Ag markets proved generally mixed Friday morning

Traders are citing harvest pressure on corn and soybeans. Corn futures acted surprisingly well Thursday night, but have followed soybeans lower this morning. Wire service sources cited fresh harvest pressure for the losses. Still the corn drop is pretty surprising, since early news of a big sale was supplemented by a huge total on the weekly USDA Export Sales report. December corn futures sagged 2.25 cents to $3.50/bushel late Friday morning, while May slipped 2.25 to $3.72.

Ag markets took some rather divergent paths Wednesday

Favorable crop prospects seemed to renew pressure on CBOT corn Wednesday. Talk that recent corn and wheat losses will reinvigorate demand boosted those markets Tuesday night, but yellow grain increases prices couldn’t be sustained. Traders apparently resumed their recent sales in response to the favorable moisture situation across the Corn Belt. July corn slipped 2.0 cents to $4.5625/bushel in late Wednesday trading, while December slid 0.75 cent to $4.535.

Ag markets were decidedly mixed again Thursday morning

Weather forecasts are again weighing on corn prices. Although corn futures followed the bean market higher yesterday, bulls couldn’t sustain the upward momentum despite signs of potential technical support. Ultimately, favorable spring weather is pointing to a good fall harvest, which in turn is weighing on prices. July corn slumped 4.5 cents to $4.68/bushel late Thursday morning, and December lost 4.0 cents to $4.655.

Ag markets diverged somewhat Thursday morning

The export data boosted corn futures Thursday morning. The ag industry is clearly expected huge fall corn production, but traders sometimes forget that demand is also quite strong. They were reminded of that fact by the weekly USDA Export Sales report, which stated corn commitments above industry forecasts. That’s a big reason for subsequent gains. September corn bounced 2.25 cents to $3.6025/bushel around midsession Thursday, while December gained 2.0 to $3.7175.
