MOSES LAKE – The city of Moses Lake’s adult softball league is underway and pushing into its summer portion of the season. “It really is a big family out there,” said Isaac Valdez who runs the league for the city. “We have a diverse group of people that play in our local league here in Moses Lake.”

Warden Development Council holds charity golf tournament

WARDEN – The Warden Development Council held their annual Golf Classic at the Sage Hills Golf Course Friday. The event had a high turnout of 64 golfers participating, mostly in teams of four, and raised roughly $12,000 for local causes, according to organizers.

Masquers’ ‘Firebringer’ breaks some new ground

SOAP LAKE — The Masquers Theater has brought many traditional musical plays to the stage. “Firebringer,” written by Meridith Stepien, Mark Swiderski, Matt Lang, Nick Lang and Brian Holden, is not one of them. “It's a bit of an obscure absurdist musical about a tribe of cave people who want to evolve and advance and do all the fun things, like discover fire, fight sabertooth tigers and mammoths, and at the end is a very sweet surprise,” said Zhane Serrano, who’s co-directing the production with Allison Pheasant. “It's weird and kooky, and it's just a little bit all over the place.”

Neppel Estates could offer workforce housing for Moses Lake, Ephrata

MOSES LAKE — There’s nothing at Neppel Estates yet, but there could be. “Our client is a developer that bought the property years and years ago with the idea that he was going to develop the lot,” said John Rosenthal, president of Realty Marketing Northwest, which has the property listed for auction. “He’s over in western Washington and he doesn’t want to spend more time … he wants to get it unloaded on an as-is basis.”

No house? No problem: Vacant land selling well in the Basin

MOSES LAKE — More people in the Basin are opting for land over houses these days, according to real estate professionals. “(People think) it’s a lesser cost (if) it’s got power and services nearby,” said Johnny Reyes, an agent with Windermere in Ephrata. “Slowly, over a year, two years, three years, they’ll put the services into the property and then they’ll put a home on it. They’re trying to save a little money that way. Also, there are people who are more inclined to live out in the country (for) a little bit more privacy.”

Local martial arts studio participating in scholarship program

MOSES LAKE – On Thursday, it was announced that Freewind Martial Arts was selected as the flagship location for the California nonprofit Jonie’s Angels new scholarship program. Freewind will be able to provide qualifying youths in Moses Lake with an all-expenses-paid year of classes.

Some road projects close to completion, others scheduled for July

MOSES LAKE — Summer construction season does not always mean road construction. A section of a downtown Moses Lake street got a new sidewalk this week. Crews from McBoyz Construction, Moses Lake, were out on Thursday morning pouring and finishing new sidewalk at the intersection of West Third Avenue and South Balsam Street. The old sidewalk was removed from about half the block of West Third Avenue, along with the corner sections and about half the block along South Balsam Street.

Grant GOP discusses selection of prosecuting attorney

EPHRATA – Members of the Grant County Republican Party gathered for their monthly meeting for June last Thursday. The main topic of discussion was organizing for the upcoming selection for the open seat for prosecuting attorney after current prosecuting attorney Kevin McCrae announced he will be stepping down from his role August 3. “I want this prosecutor to be put in so cleanly that they can hit the ground running with no cloud of how they were appointed,” said Andrew Koeppen, Chair for the Grant County Republican Central Committee.

Heading into this summer, Head Coach Bob Richardson is hopeful for another successful season of growth. “If we get better every single game, we learn from the little things, that's a success to me, the girls are getting better, and we as a group are getting better. So as long as there's growth and progression, that's a successful season for me,” he said.

Mavericks athletics overcome levy obstacles

Community help, dedicated coaches and parental support make for a successful year of MLHS athletics.

MOSES LAKE – The school year has come to an end, the class of 2025 has graduated, and an unprecedented year of athletics has been completed. After the local levy in 2024 failed to pass twice, Moses Lake athletics and extracurriculars were faced with financial challenges like they had never seen. Loren Sandhop is the Athletic Director at Moses Lake High School and oversaw the task of making sports happen throughout the 2024-25 school year. According to Sandhop, due to a shortfall exceeding $20 million, athletics of any kind were being called into question.
