GCIA hosts another first in electric flight

MOSES LAKE — It was another day for the aviation record books at the Grant County International Airport on Thursday. “We are, I think, the second-largest hydrogen airplane ever to fly after the Tupolev 155, which the Soviet (Union) flew in 1988,” said Paul Eremenko, the co-founder and CEO of Hawthorne, California-based Universal Hydrogen. “But I think we can reasonably claim to the fact that we are the largest to cruise principally on hydrogen.” Eremenko spoke to a crowd of about 100 people gathered in the GCIA main terminal following a roughly 20-minute test flight of a special Dash 8 commuter airliner which flew with one electric engine powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system created by Universal Hydrogen.

YAKIMA – The 1B/2B/1A State Volleyball Tournaments got off to a hot start at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Thursday, with No. 11 seed Lind-Ritzville and No. 13 seed Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School both making the trip to state in the 2B and 1B brackets, respectively. “Getting out of districts, in our league, is a huge success,” Lind-Ritzville Head Coach Cari Galbreath said. “We have a highly competitive league, and so that road isn’t always easy for us, and getting out of that was a great success.” ...

Evelyn Lenore (Evie) Melcher, 9, of Ephrata, passed away July 19th, 2022, at Seattle Children’s Hospital after a sudden cardiac arrest in the early morning hours of July 14th. Evie was born September 8, 2012, at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake, to Ross and Addy Melcher. Our beautiful girl came home to two loving older brothers, Everett and Casey. Evie was a feisty little thing – always keeping up with her brothers and determined to never be left out. She loved meeting new people and made friends with everyone.
