USDA grants aim to help plan and prevent wildfires
ASHLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Forest Service announced it is giving nearly $25 million in grants to help plan for and prevent wildfires across Washington, according to a USFS press release. The grants are part of the Forest Service’s Community Wildfire Defense Grant program and are being given to 14 organizations from Spokane to South Bend in Pacific County, the press release stated. However, more than $11 million — including a $10 million grant — is going to three organizations in Kittitas County, including Kittitas County Resilient Landscapes.
Stack to speak on dangers of marijuana
MOSES LAKE — Laura Stack, CEO and founder of Johnny’s Ambassadors, will be speaking at 6 p.m. on March 30 at Columba Basin Technical Skills Center in Moses Lake regarding the risks associated with marijuana use. Former counselor files lawsuit against MLSD
MOSES LAKE — A former Moses Lake School District counselor has filed suit against the school district alleging discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination following what she alleges was a demotion and involuntary transfer. Dana Santos also named former MLSD administrator Dave Balcom and Columbia Middle School assistant principal Michael Nordsten as individuals in the suit. Charles Hayes
Charles “Chuck” Oliver Hayes Jr., 83, passed away March 7, 2023, in Moses Lake, Washington. Charles was born in April 1939 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Charles and Elnora Hayes. Charles married Fay Oct. 11, 1958, in Moses Lake and worked as a diesel mechanic. Charles is survived by his wife Fay Hayes; daughter Cindy; son Randy; grandchildren Jake Breaux, Alice Noe and Haley Hayes; and great-grandchildren Madelyn and Sophia Noe. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and one daughter.

Local Audubon Society seeks nature lovers, mentors
MOSES LAKE — The Central Basin Audubon Society is looking for a few good volunteers. “You don’t have to be a teacher,” said Gayle Talbot, president of the local Audubon Society. “You can be a person who’s just interested in children and interested in the environment.” Every year, society volunteers lead field trips for elementary school students to the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, which covers about 30,000 acres between Moses Lake and Othello, mostly south of Potholes Reservoir, to see a relatively undisturbed example of the local environment and the wild creatures that live there or migrate through, said Talbot.

Abortion bill protects Washington residents from outside restrictions
OLYMPIA — Reproductive health care services including abortion and gender affirming treatment would be protected in Washington State under a bill passed recently by the House in a 59-38 vote. The legislation, House Bill 1469, was sponsored by Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island. Hansen said it establishes the state’s right to protect the insurance coverage of protected healthcare services, regardless of a person’s location when receiving those services.
CWU students strut stuff at Rubik’s Cube tournament
ELLENSBURG — Two Central Washington University students made a good showing at the Sleepless in Seattle 24-hour Rubik’s Cube Tournament last month, according to a statement from the university. CWU mathematics major Ethan Davis won two events at the Feb. 18-19 competition in Everett, including 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, where competitors memorize several cubes, put on a blindfold and try to solve them all without looking, the statement said. Davis also won in an event called Megaminx, in which he solved his puzzle in less than 30 seconds, putting him among the top 10 competitors in the history of the event, the university said. Meanwhile, according to the statement, CWU mechanical engineering major Eli Kirk solved a Rubik’s Cube in less than nine seconds and took third place in an event called “Skewb,” in which competitors try to solve a skewed cube.
