Five fantasy series for ages 12 and up

When I first started fourth grade, I despised reading. Now, that very thought sounds like sacrilege and I’ve gone on amazing adventures all through the pages of books. Not only do I have fond memories of reading particular books, but I grew as both a person and a writer as a result. Generally, fantasy and science fiction have been my favorite genres, though poetry and the occasional biography have drawn me in.

Rice dishes better than anything from a box

Rice dishes better than anything from a box

Nearly everyone has tried that famous named boxed rice side dish. You know, the one that features the cable car from that city in California. Did you know it is really easy to make, without the aid of the box? In fact, with a little practice, this is one of those recipes you can start to make without a recipe. I actually made up a batch off the top of my head once and found I had made a tastier version than I had ever found out of the box. I think the biggest difference is the fresh flavors of the background vegetables, versus the dried and powdered versions in the flavor packet. I‘ve also noted a few recipes online that have no veggies at all. They rely on powdered garlic and dried parsley to do the job that carrots, onion and celery do in my version.

Experts preview 2024 Washington apple industry

MOSES LAKE — Several factors will likely play a significant role in 2024’s apple industry, including labor shortages, legislation, water availability issues, a strong export market and last year’s opening of the Indian market, according to representatives of the Washington Apple Commission and the Washington Tree Fruit Association. Washington State Tree Fruit Association President Jon DeVaney said it is too early for a real crop prediction. “We will not really start trying to do an initial estimate for talking to our members until later in the spring,” DeVaney said. “Crops can be affected by so much weather in between the early part of the season and when harvest begins. We try not to make too many firm predictions too early.”

Washington students show increased attendance and high school course completion

OLYMPIA — Three important indicators of student success are attending school regularly, passing all of their ninth grade classes, and completing advanced courses where they earn both high school and college credit at the same time. In the 2022–23 school year, Washington’s students made significant strides in all three, according to data published recently by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Each year, Washington’s students continue to work hard to set themselves up for success,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “Attending school regularly, passing all their classes in ninth grade, and completing advanced-level coursework all prepare students for their unique future pathways. I am so proud of our students for their efforts and of educators and district staff for supporting them.”

Mavs defeat Eisenhower in Big 9 tourney

MOSES LAKE — The Mavericks opened the Columbia Basin Big 9 district tournament with a 39-32 win over Eisenhower Tuesday night, holding the Cadets to just two points in the fourth quarter. Moses Lake Head Coach Matt Strophy said the win came down to “sheer determination.” “When we got in the locker room for winning the first game in the district tournament, the girls were somber – there was not the excitement, because I think they knew they didn’t play well,” Strophy said. “So, we had to remind them at this point of the season, winning ugly is better than losing pretty.”

Lind-Ritzville brings home the W for season opener

RITZVILLE - The Lind-Ritzville Broncos brought the heat Friday night in their season opener against Colfax, running away with a 35-12 victory. “We have a lot to work on but we're very happy to start the season with a win,” said junior running back Brock Kinch. Despite the big victory, the beginning of the game saw Colfax and Lind-Ritzville neck and neck. Lind-Ritzville started the game, pushing little by little toward the end zone before an interception by Colfax about two and a half minutes into the game foiled the Broncos' progress. Colfax made several pushes before making a touchdown with six and a half minutes left in the game. The two-point conversion failed however for Colfax when their quarterback was sacked but gave them a 6-0 lead over Lind-Ritzville. Kinch leveled the playing field with a touchdown three minutes later but took a one-point lead with a successful extra kick by senior quarterback Chase Galbreath. The Broncos were leading 7-6 when Colfax’s JJ Bodey made an 89-yard kickoff return touchdown. Again, Colfax’s two-point conversion failed but left them 12-7 over the Broncos going into the second quarter...

SEATTLE (AP) — While the Seattle Mariners' top task all along was just getting into the postseason, playing home games in the wild-card round was a very close second. Accomplishing that will now take some significant help from others following Seattle's 10-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
