Ag markets ended Monday mostly higher
Grain traders were probably squaring positions Monday. The corn market has recently suffered badly from prospects for a huge U.S. harvest and from U.S. dollar strength. Today’s Export Inspections result also looked rather bearish. Nevertheless, futures rose modestly today, which probably reflected widespread short-covering ahead of tomorrow’s quarterly Grain Stocks report. December corn futures gained 2.75 cents to $3.2575/bushel in late Monday action, while May bounced 2.75 to $3.47.
Ag markets proved generally weak Tuesday night
Profit-taking reportedly hit the crop markets Tuesday night. The crop markets posted impressive gains Tuesday, with the nearby contracts making multi-month highs. Their rallies may persist, especially if country prices remain strong, but the markets apparently suffered from widespread profit-taking in overnight action. May corn sank 4.0 cents to $5.1175/bushel early Wednesday morning, while December slumped 3.75 cents to $5.085.
Ag markets diverged somewhat Thursday morning
The export data boosted corn futures Thursday morning. The ag industry is clearly expected huge fall corn production, but traders sometimes forget that demand is also quite strong. They were reminded of that fact by the weekly USDA Export Sales report, which stated corn commitments above industry forecasts. That’s a big reason for subsequent gains. September corn bounced 2.25 cents to $3.6025/bushel around midsession Thursday, while December gained 2.0 to $3.7175.
Ag markets proved surprisingly changeable Thursday morning
Corn futures dipped on China talk Thursday morning. Corn futures followed soybeans higher Wednesday night and seemed likely to keep rising after the weekly Export Sales report stated the new-crop result far above expectations. However, rumors that China will insist that U.S. DDGs shipped to that country be certified free of an unapproved GMO trait apparently undercut the market. September corn sank 0.25 cents to $3.6225/bushel late Thursday morning, while December sagged 0.5 cent to $3.7025.
Ag markets moved mostly lower after Tuesday's USDA reports
Corn futures bounced on Tuesday’s production data. Today’s USDA Crop Production report stated the forthcoming corn crop at 14.032 billion bushels, which fell moderately below the average of analyst estimates. Global carryout on the WASDE report also fell short of expectations, thereby causing corn futures to take back a portion of early losses. September corn slipped 3.5 cents to $3.5325/bushel shortly after Tuesday’s reports were released, while December lost 4.75 to $3.635.
Bears made presence felt in the ag markets Thursday afternoon
Corn futures dipped on China talk Thursday. September corn settled 1.0 cent lower at $3.615/bushel late Thursday, while December sagged 1.25 cents to $3.695.
