VATICAN CITY (AP) — Cardinal Robert Prevost has taken the name Leo XIV. The Chicago-born missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and took over the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops was elected the first pope from the United States in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

MOSES LAKE – The Mavericks (11-6) were defeated 6-2 at home field by the Eastmont Wildcats (8-10). Head coach Donnie Lindgren had few words to say when reflecting on how the game plan was executed heading into this game. “We had too many, too many mistakes, and we didn't make adjustments hitting the ball,” Lindgren said.

MLHS tennis victorious over Eisenhower
MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake boys (9-4) and girls (9-4) tennis were victorious against the Eisenhower Cadets. The boys forced a shutout 7-0 win while the girls held their own with a 5-2 victory. Head coach Jay Dickinson was enthusiastic about the outcome of this match, considering it was much closer when they last met earlier this season.

Kenneth Eugene Kriete, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 93. A lifelong resident of Ephrata, Washington, Kenny was known for his kindness, humor, and dedication to his family and community.

WA wildlife crop damage law signed
OLYMPIA – In a move to support farmers in less densely populated areas, the Washington State Legislature unanimously passed Senate Bill 5165, which aims to provide compensation for damage to commercial crops caused by wild deer and elk in designated frontier one counties.
MLSD discusses levy fund use in 2025-26
MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake School District Superintendent Carol Lewis discussed plans for the 2025-26 school year levy funds at the May 1 regular school board meeting. The district will only collect a partial levy in the second half of the school year at an estimated $5.9 million om revenue. However, the following school year the district will be able to do a full collection of about $11.9 million.
Moses Lake School Board passes five policies, holds one
MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake School Board met for its regular meeting April 1 passed five policy updates and discussed one policy update with no action taken. The policies ranged from updating guidelines for non-resident students to removing a sentence from the district’s sexual harassment policy.
