Elks Lodge to move into Porterhouse building
MOSES LAKE — In a time when everything seems to be changing, at least one thing will remain the same: the Porterhouse totem pole is staying put. “There's such history with that totem pole, we would like to put a plaque there that acknowledges the history and the Russell family for leaving it there for the community,” said Debbie Doran-Martinez, a trustee with Elks Lodge No. 2892.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thi Sanh Ayers, who peacefully departed on Sept. 23, 2025, in Moses Lake, Washington, at the age of 89, after a long battle with various illnesses. Born on Jan. 1, 1936, in Can Tho, Vietnam, Thi Sanh moved to the United States in 1975 and dedicated the last 50 years to making Moses Lake her beloved home. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sanh will be cherished for her fierce fighting spirit, her incredible survivor mentality, and her deep passion for gardening, cooking, and fishing.

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake High School has been honored as a 2025 "School on the Rise" by the Association of Washington School Principals and the Association of Washington Student Leaders. This recognition highlights the school’s strides in fostering a culture of inclusivity, leadership and student success, according to a statement from the district.

Barbara Ann Ronk, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 25, 2025, in Moses Lake, Washington. She was born on October 8, 1942, in Modesto, California. She moved with her family to Eltopia, Washington in July 1955. She lived a life rich with laughter, love, and purpose.
Moses Lake man booked after child abuse investigation
MOSES LAKE – Maxwell S. Homer was arrested by Grant County Sheriff’s Office Motor Crimes Detectives Dec. 19 after a 10-month-long Internet Crimes Against Children investigation. A search warrant was then served at his home in the 3000 block of Road F-Northeast.
Deanna Jean Cuthbertson ‘Mimi’ Hirz

Deanna Jean Cuthbertson Hirz, “Mimi”, a beloved resident of Moses Lake, Washington, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. She was 86 years old. A joyous reunion with Ned took place on this day, which was also their 65th wedding anniversary. Born on April 12, 1939, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Deanna was the daughter of Frederick Cuthbertson and Lenora Brown. Her family moved to Medford, Oregon when she was six months old, where she grew up. A graduate of Medford High School, Deanna embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved participating in school plays, she was a spirited majorette and cheerleader in the Bliss Band, and she lent her beautiful voice to the girls' choir. Deanna became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1954 at the age of 15. Even at age 12, before joining the church, she declared to her mother and aunt her intention to work on their family tree. Little did she know this spark would ignite one of her life's greatest callings. Beginning in 1959, Deanna dedicated her life to genealogy, meticulously indexing tens of thousands of names and passionately helping countless others discover their own family heritage. She joyfully served in many church capacities, including Stake Young Women's President and Counselor, Relief Society President, Primary President, teacher, compassionate service leader and chorister. She loved working with the youth.
Moses Lake man arrested in attempted murder case
MOSES LAKE – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27-year-old Luis Angel Ortega Tuesday morning after an what investigators describe as an attempted murder last Friday night. Ortega is lodged in Grant County Jail for suspicion of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree robbery, and second-degree attempted murder.

Kathryn (Kathy) Schmalz Rackham, 81, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, in Moses Lake after a long battle with Alzheimer’s/dementia. Kathy was born July 17, 194,3 in Ogden, Utah to William Moyes Schmalz and Karma Chadwick. She was born the middle child of three. She lived in Salt Lake City and Seattle before moving to a farm north of Warden in 1952. In 1961 she graduated as the valedictorian of Warden High School and attended Central Washington State College in Ellensburg receiving a degree in Education and French in 1965. She taught English and French at Tyee High School prior to spending a summer abroad in France.
New Elks Lodge hosts youth hoop shoot
MOSES LAKE — Four Moses Lake youths will advance in the Elks Hoop Shoot thanks to their free throw skills. Fabian Vargas, Preston Groth, Linden Wiltbank and Brinly Wiltbank emerged the champions in their divisions in the competition held Saturday at Frontier Middle School, according to an email from Debbie Doran-Martinez, a member of the new Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge that formed in November in Moses Lake.
