Mavs Hancock and Whitaker sign with Eastern Oregon

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Mavericks pitchers Kason Whitaker and Cooper Hancock both signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers with Eastern Oregon Wednesday afternoon. “They’re an up-and-coming program,” said Cooper. “Their program got shut down a while ago, but then they got started back up in 2021 and every single year they kept on building.” Kason plans to pursue a degree in rangeland science, he said, where he would learn more about managing range and grazing lands for livestock and wildlife.

"I thought it went well; we were pretty dominant throughout the majority of the game,” said Jacks’ head coach Hector Vaca. “There were some moments where we got a little sloppy, but we were able to respond to that and get the right things going again.”

MLHS Tennis bests Davis in first meet of league play

MOSES LAKE- The Mavericks boys and girls tennis teams were both able to defeat Davis Thursday afternoon in their first match-up of league play. It was close for the boys who ended up beating Davis 4-3, winning all of their doubles matches and one singles. The girls won all of their games in singles and doubles, going 7-0 for the evening.

Strong Moses Lake offense pushes past Ephrata defense

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Mavericks and the Ephrata Tigers went head-to-head Thursday night on the Ephrata soccer pitch with the game ending with a score of 4-0 in favor of Moses Lake. The Mavs scored twice in the first half, resulting in the Tigers going on the defensive early in the game. Ephrata worked to regain control in the second half but were unable to overcome the Mavs’ defense with a goal and a penalty kick putting the Mavs up to four by the end of the game.

Wahluke looks to continue building team cohesion after strong start

MATTAWA – Wahluke soccer has started their 2025 season 2-1 and Coach Cele Lopez expressed pride in the team that has been built so far. This season the team has added new faces to the roster and is working on building a new defense. On top of this Coach Lopez has noticed a particularly strong bond that has been building among his players.

Referee shortage hits local fields

EPHRATA – Local communities have been feeling the impact of the nationwide officiating shortage which has had an impact on all sports. According to Bruce Shields, an officiant signer for Washington State, before COVID the area had over 100 umpires ready to officiate for baseball and as of last year that number had dropped down to 37.
