Soap Lake holds 3-on-3 basketball tournament
SOAP LAKE – The Soap Lake Prevention Coalition held their second annual 3-on-3 Soaring Eagles Vape Awareness Basketball tournament over the weekend. The tournament not only highlighted local athletes but also promoted awareness of substance abuse. “The tournament isn’t just about basketball – it’s about building meaningful connections that can protect young people from the pressures of substance use,” said Ryan Boldman, Coordinator Soap Lake Prevention Coalition. This year’s tournament featured 20 teams this year compared he the six teams last year. The teams were split among four brackets, one for boys aged 13-15, one for boys aged 16-18, one for girls aged 16-18, and one for adults.
Sleep Center clients, law enforcement adjusting after closure
MOSES LAKE – With the closure of the Moses Lake Sleep Center on June 30, the homeless community in Moses Lake, residents and law enforcement are adjusting to the change in resources serving the unsheltered. “I think the big thing is any time we change anything in law enforcement, we try to make the first period while everybody’s getting used to it to be about education and we’re definitely doing that now,” said Jeff Sursely with MLPD. “A lot of our focus now has been educating people as they transition to a time period where there isn’t a sleep center.”
Othello honors Independence Day with its annual celebration
OTHELLO — The Greater Othello Chamber of Commerce hosted the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration in Lions Park. The event lasted all day Friday with a parade, games, tournaments and a fireworks show. “Overall, I think it was a great event,” said Jackie Wilhelm, Othello Chamber Manager. “I think we’ve kind of worked on the things that needed to be worked on, and everything went well as far as the organization and the planning and getting people in and out of the park.” Wilhelm said her favorite part of the celebration is the flag-raising ceremony. “That's something that I’ve tried to make sure we highlight and incorporate every year,” she said.
Quincy Jacks host junior basketball camp
QUINCY – The Quincy Lady Jacks Basketball team will be hosting a Jr Jacks basketball camp July 28 and 29. The camp will be open to both boys and girls in third through eighth grade. “Me and our (head coach) Johan Farias, we are just trying to get a camp together for the community,” said Lady Jacks assistant basketball coach Gonzalo Guerrero. “We haven’t had a high school camp out here in a while and this is our first year taking over the program.

Grid Kids to start girls flag football this fall
MOSES LAKE – Grid Kids Football has partnered with NFL Flag to bring more flag football opportunities to girls in grades 1-12 with practices starting in August and their season starting this Fall. “I think there is a general movement in women and girls flag football,” said JD Houvener, the NFL Flag Football League organizer for Moses Lake. “It’s just going to continue leading up to the 2028 Olympics where it's going to debut for the first time as an Olympic sport.”

Fire destroys home in Lind
LIND – On July 5 at 2:30 a.m. Adams County Fire District 2 was dispatched to a yard fire in the 200 block of E 2nd St. Upon arrival it was determined the fire had spread to the house and the fence of a neighboring house.
Ephrata softball coach retiring after giving back, forming connections
EPHRATA – The Ephrata Tigers softball coach, Heather Wood, is officially retiring after coaching since 2002. This season the Tigers softball team earned third in districts and made the state tournament after Wood earned her 250th career win with the team in April. “The reason you (become a coach) is because you’re giving back to your community, I was blessed with great coaches in my time, throughout my high school, rec league and my college, and just kind of giving back to what they did,” said Wood. “And you develop great relationships with the kids and see them outside of the academic world.”
UPDATED: Fire breaks out in field near S. Eastlake Drive in Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE – A fire has spread across the lakeside part of the field behind S Eastlake Dr and Vue Street. A Moses Lake Fire Department crew is working to put out the fire and prevent further spread across the area. One witness on scene said the fire started at around 9:45 p.m. Witnesses who live in one of the houses near where the fire started said it was likely due to fireworks that are being lit in the area. They also said it might have started about 20 yards away from their home and the wind blew it away from both S. Eastlake Drive and Vue Street. More information on the fire will be provided as the story progresses.
High Fitness brings friends together with a health focus
MOSES LAKE – The Larson Rec Center’s High Fitness class held its Fourth of July-themed High Fitness class this past week. The class is held every Tuesday from 7:45-8:45 p.m. “It gives you a family, it gives you friends, keeps you accountable and makes working out way more fun than doing it by yourself,” said Liza Tait, the instructor for High Fitness at the Rec Center. “And as the participant you don’t have to think, you just show up and I tell you what to do.”
Local doctor finds new calling with Eudaimonia
MOSES LAKE – Dr. Hollie Matthews has begun a new journey in the medical field by opening Eudaimonia Medical Spa at 124 E Third Ave #212. Her goal is to provide services that guide her patients toward optimal health and personal fulfillment. “I’m learning a lot about business, which I had never been interested in,” said Dr. Matthews. “I always say I’m a scientist first, now a businesswoman, which was not an expectation, but I just would like to be able to stay open and still help some people.”
New Bride Missionary Baptist Church burns Wednesday
MOSES LAKE – Local authorities were notified that the New Bride Missionary Baptist church was on fire late Wednesday afternoon. An officer from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office who was on the scene said the entire building was engulfed in flames by the time they had gotten onto the scene.
Fire burns behind Grant Co. Irrigation and Rehabilitation building
MOSES LAKE – On the morning of July 2, the City of Moses Lake Fire Department was dispatched due to multiple reports of a wildfire located in the area of Penn Street and behind the Grant County Irrigation and Rehabilitation District building, north of East Wheeler Road. The fire was reported at about 10:45 a.m. “We made a pretty quick stop of the fire,” said Battalion Chief JR Schwendeman, who was on the scene. “It’s going to continue to burn for probably the next 24 hours in certain areas, but we’re going to be in the area in the next 24 hours continuing to watch it and put out hot spots.”

ACH Legion earns two wins against Ferris Legion AA
COULEE CITY – The ACH American Legion baseball team earned two wins in their doubleheader against Ferris Legion AA Monday afternoon. This puts the team at a record of 5-5. “Even though we didn’t really get going like we wanted to at times and balls didn’t fall when we hit some good shots, I never really felt a panic in any situation,” said ACH Legion coach Mike Correia. “I think we just kind of stayed the course.”

Steel Wolf Karate stays busy for the summer
MOSES LAKE – Steel Wolf Karate has plans to keep busy during the summer months following their break for the Fourth of July and into the future. These plans include expanding their regular classes and getting more involved in creating community activities. “There's a lot to be said for just having a productive physical outlet,” said Robert Heale, the owner and head instructor for Steel Wolf Karate. “Kids are full of energy and we’ve got to help them direct it somewhere that’s constructive.”
Othello Special Olympics teams succeed at state
OTHELLO – The Othello Special Olympics Dream Team qualified both their soccer and track teams to the state tournament over the weekend. Overall, the Dream Team took home seven medals from the tournament. “I think it’s very important that they can be proud, and they can get out there and do things that they’re capable of and feel really good about themselves,” said Dream Team Coach Pam Schmidt.
Quincy Special Olympics in state tournament
QUINCY – The Quincy Special Olympics Jackrabbits travelled to Tacoma over the weekend to compete in the state tournament. The team overall brought home 14 medals from their efforts over the weekend.
Moses Lake Special Olympics soccer earns third in state
MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Special Olympics Scorpions soccer team went to the state tournament over the weekend where they placed third. This follows the team’s second place finish in the regionals. “They are very proud of themselves, and I am very proud of them because we were down five of our best players that we don’t have this year,” said Scorpions’ Soccer Coach Jennifer Vaughan-Darby. “So, to even be able to come to state this year is amazing in itself.” The tournament started out rough for the Scorpions as they lost their first three games on Saturday.

Dru Gimlin tourney brings B-ball enthusiasts together
QUINCY – Downtown Quincy hosted the annual Dru Gimlin 3-on-3 Basketball tournament Saturday. The games began at 9 a.m. and lasted until 6 p.m., making for a full day of basketball in honor of the memory of Dru Gimlin. “We are all truly thankful for our community and everybody that continues to come support the tournament,” said Stephanie Boorman, who runs the tournament.
Moses Lake Special Olympics bocce team excels at state championships
MOSES LAKE —The Moses Lake Special Olympics’ bocce team participated in the state tournament in Tacoma over the weekend. The bocce team took home six medals altogether with three gold, two silver and a bronze and had two players finish fourth. “We had it at the Puget Sound University for (state competition); it was a really nice place, and they treated the athletes very well,” said Shane Lunderville, the bocce coach for the Moses Lake Special Olympics team. “We also got to go to a Rainiers game that Friday night so that was really special for the athletes.” The bocce team played both individual and unified matches during the tournament. Local athletes win PG State tournament with Reign
PASCO – Reign Sports Performance’s 18u team went 4-0 and became champions of the Perfect Game Washington State Tournament last weekend. The team consists of four basin players Anthony Gutierrez from Warden and Quade Gonzalez, Jordan Montemayor and Kal El Ozuna from Othello.

WIAA officially adds girls flag football
MOSES LAKE — The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association passed the amendment to add girls flag football as an official sport. The sport was officially sanctioned in April, and the resolution to hold the state championships in the spring season was passed at the WIAA executive board meeting on June 8. “Passing this year was awesome with the help and continued support of the Seattle Seahawks and all the people that helped get it off the ground,” said WIAA Marketing Coordinator Bryn Langrock, who leads the girls flag football advisory committee. “It’s been a long journey, but I think officially sanctioning this sport is going to make it take off even more than it has so far.” The amendment to add the sport was first brought forward last year where it failed but was brought up again this year where it ultimately passed. Langrock said the drafters of the amendment made the effort this year to make it appealing to both sides of the state to participate.

Dru Gimlin tournament set for Saturday
QUINCY – The annual Dru Gimlin 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be this Saturday with player check-in beginning at 8 a.m. and the first games starting at 9 a.m. The event helps raise money to support Quincy athletes and ensures financial support for children to participate in sports. “It will be a fun-filled day full of basketball,” said Stephanie Boorman, who runs the event. “It’s a long day, but we’re excited to have the streets of downtown come alive again with basketball. The tournament is still in need of volunteers to help out with operations at the tournament. Organizers need court monitors to manage fouls, scorekeepers and a cleanup crew for Saturday.

WIAA announces raise in ticket prices for 2025-26 season
MOSES LAKE – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association passed an initiative to increase ticket prices for the 2025-26 school year during their executive board meeting on June 8. The official full ticket price list will be approved in the fall.

ACH Legion starts summer season
COULEE CITY — The Almira/Coulee-Hartline American Legion summer baseball team split a double header over the weekend against Gonzaga Prep AA1. The team now sits at a record of 1-2 to start the season. “I think one of the lessons is just to be patient,” said ACH Legion head coach Mike Correia. “We have a number of players, especially in the small school here, that play basketball, football and baseball so all of them are taking part in the various camps or tournaments, or league play for whatever sport, so that wears on them a little bit.” In the first game, Gonzaga Prep scored six runs in the first inning followed by three in the second. ACH Legion put up a run in the top of the fourth which was met by another two runs from Gonzaga Prep making the score 1-11 at the top of the fifth.

MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Top Tier Sports baseball teams have now entered the summer tournament season. Top Tier is partnering with the Moses Lake Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department.

Moses Lake adult softball moves into summer play
MOSES LAKE – The city of Moses Lake’s adult softball league is underway and pushing into its summer portion of the season. “It really is a big family out there,” said Isaac Valdez who runs the league for the city. “We have a diverse group of people that play in our local league here in Moses Lake.”

Grant GOP discusses selection of prosecuting attorney
EPHRATA – Members of the Grant County Republican Party gathered for their monthly meeting for June last Thursday. The main topic of discussion was organizing for the upcoming selection for the open seat for prosecuting attorney after current prosecuting attorney Kevin McCrae announced he will be stepping down from his role August 3. “I want this prosecutor to be put in so cleanly that they can hit the ground running with no cloud of how they were appointed,” said Andrew Koeppen, Chair for the Grant County Republican Central Committee.

Jacks reflect on 2025 baseball season
QUINCY – The Quincy Jackrabbits baseball team finished their 2025 season with a 5-15 record and entered the District Five tournament as the seventh seed. This was their first year back in 2A as they played in the Central Washington Athletic Conference. “We wanted to try and secure a home field opening round district game,” said Jacks’ head coach Seth Longwill. “Keep improving, working up, having some momentum going into districts and be able to play with anybody to give ourselves a chance to advance.”
Wahluke soccer celebrates strong 18-4 season
MATTAWA – The Wahluke Warriors soccer team ended their 2025 season with an overall record of 18-4. They also were the number one team in the South-Central Athletic Conference and earned third place in the district tournament. “The expectation was for everyone to have a good season together,” said Warriors head coach Cele Lopez. “To have fun and for the seniors to enjoy the last opportunity they had to compete with the school, and it came out pretty good.”

WSP has since determined that the death was a suicide, said Trooper Ryan Michael, a public information officer for the WSP’s sixth district which includes Moses Lake.

Pedestrian killed on I-90 in Moses Lake area
MOSES LAKE – The Washington State Patrol is still investigating a fatality that occurred Sunday afternoon at exit 176 on Interstate 90 in Moses Lake. WSP has since determined that the death was a suicide, said Trooper Ryan Michael, a public information officer for the WSP’s sixth district which includes Moses Lake. “He did jump off the overpass and landed on I-90 before he was struck,” said Michael. According to a press release issued by WSP, a Subaru Forrester was driving along the interstate when it struck the unidentified individual at milepost 176. Neither the driver nor passenger, both from Everett, Washington, were injured in the accident, though there was damage reported to the vehicle.

MOSES LAKE – The Washington State Patrol is investigating a fatality that occurred Sunday afternoon which was a one car vs pedestrian collision on 1-90 near exit 175 heading east bound, said Trooper Ryan Michael, a public information officer for the Washington State Patrol’s sixth district which includes Moses Lake. “Traffic is being diverted to the exit and slowly moving,” said Michael. Michael said the WSP will provide a press release providing more information as soon as it is available.

Wahluke Warriors baseball season in review
MATTAWA – The Wahluke Warriors baseball team finished their 2025 season with an overall record of 4-15. “I was really proud of the guys,” said Warriors head coach Chet Bangs. “They filled different roles, stepped up, especially the freshmen, and the senior leadership was really strong.”

EPHRATA – The Ephrata Tigers softball team finished their season with an overall record of 20-10, earning third in districts and making the state tournament. “At the beginning of the season, we as a team set our team goals for the year,” said Tigers head coach Heather Wood. “They have a top five that they always aim for and so theirs was district champs, league champs, make it to state, second day of state, and then developing a family.” The Tigers started the season only losing three seniors last year but struggled here and there with players stepping into positions they hadn’t played before, said Wood.

EPHRATA – The Ephrata Tigers baseball team ended their 2025 season with a 4-18 record after entering the district tournament as the number eight seed. “As the season went along, we had our bumps in the road with different teams we were playing and that’s going to happen,” Tigers head coach David Tempel said. “I was very pleased with how we competed in some of the games where on paper it looks a little bit like a tall task.” Coming into the season, the Tigers were made up mostly of young players with very little varsity experience. The goal for them this year was to just improve as much as possible and utilize the teachable moments that occur in every game as the season progressed.

Congrats to ACH Baseball
COULEE CITY – Congratulations to the Almira-Coulee-Hartline Warriors on ending the 2025 spring season in third place at the state tournament. The Warriors had a solid foundation to build off coming into this season and were working toward making another state tournament appearance following their second place finish last season. ACH started the season with a 10-game win streak and would finish off the season with an overall record of 19-4 and a league record of 12-0 in the Northeast 1B, placing them as number one in the conference as they made their way into district play.

YAKIMA – Soap Lake Eagles tennis player Xavier Ewing took third in the 1B/2B state tournament after placing second in the district tournament. Ewing also earned the title of boys tennis player of the year following the state tournament.
ACH Warriors pull third in state tournament
SELAH – The Almira-Coulee-Hartline Warriors earned third in the 1B state tournament Saturday afternoon. The team entered the tournament as the number three seed. “We’ve played a lot of baseball together and we’re kind of senior heavy, so we knew it was coming to an end and there were feelings throughout the weekend,” said Warriors’ senior Carter Pitts.

Basin schools prepare for summer meals
COLUMBIA BASIN — Schools around the Columbia Basin will have food service programs available at no charge for children 18 years of age and younger over the course of the summer. Ephrata “We are going to be offering both congregate meals and non-congregate meals,” said Alain Black, Ephrata School District’s food services director. “One of our schools will have congregate meals where children have to eat on-site.” The on-site meals will be available at Grant Elementary with breakfast served from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will also be a grab-and-go meal option which will be distributed in a drive-thru line at Ephrata Middle School from noon to 1 p.m. Both sites will be open Monday-Thursday from June 16 to July 24. The program will be closed for distribution on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth, but grab-and-go boxes for that day will be available for pickup on June 18.
Moses Lake youth soccer program sees success
MOSES LAKE – The Basin Sounders Girls 2011 team had a lot of success this season, bringing the team up to the National Premiere League. The girls finished the spring season in second place for the NPL.

ROYAL CITY – The Royal Knights girls tennis doubles team Madi Christensen and Campbelle Anderson won third at the 1A state tournament last Saturday in Yakima.

Warden Boys golf earns fourth at state
WARDEN – The Warden Cougars boys golf team earned fourth place at the 2B state golf tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course in Spokane last week. “It was a cool experience getting to go up a day early and getting to go through the course with golf carts,” said Cougar’s golfer Jaden Hernandez. “It’s a lot playing on a course like that and having to take things serious.” The Cougars had three boys qualify for state, Hernandez, Everett Cox and JJ Madsen. The par for MeadowWood Golf Course is 72 and it spans 6,728 yards.
Othello Huskies qualify for baseball semifinals
CHEHALIS — The Othello Huskies began their push for a state championship, winning in both the opening round against R.A. Long 4-1 and in the quarterfinals against W.F. West 14-8. The Huskies entered the tournament as the number five seed. “I feel amazing, man, these guys have done a great job this year,” said Huskies head coach Sonny Garza. “Everything that I’ve kind of thrown at them, they’ve just soaked it in, and they’ve been able to go out and execute.” Othello’s first opponent in the state tournament was the number twelve seed R.A. Long. The game went scoreless in the first inning, with R.A. Long earning the first score of the game in the top of the second, which would be the team’s only score. Zayvier Olazcon singled down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. The Huskies would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Jaxon Gomez singled, Kal-El Ozuna walked and Jordan Montemayor doubled, each scoring one run for the final score of 4-1.
