The Fishin' Magician: Eastern Washington trout opening
The opening weekend of trout fishing in Eastern Washington was one of the best in years. Anglers were greeted with sunny skies and calm weather, and trout fishing was very good on most of the lakes in the region. My wife and I visited seven lakes in Okanogan County on Saturday of the opener, and found happy anglers everywhere we went.

Trout lakes performed very well throughout the region on the opening of the fishing season. Good weather played a part in angler participation, and although overall it looked like traffic was down compared to earlier years, thousands packed the campgrounds and parks in Eastern Washington.

Public input sought about proposed lake treatment
Fish and Wildlife is set to rehabilitate three lakes in eastern Washington with rotenone. The lakes are Fish Lake in Spokane County, Little Beaver Lake in Okanogan County and Burke Lake in Grant County. The treatments are proposed for this fall to remove species ranging from brown bullhead to northern pike.

With day time temperatures at the 90 degree mark exciting times are happening for fishers in Central Eastern Washington. Surface water temperatures are topping the 70 degree mark which really improves bass fishing. Buzz baits, floating stick baits, Rebel Pop R.s and especially floating frogs of all kinds now are producing large mouth bass over 5 lbs. and small mouth bass over 4l bs. Yamamoto Senkos of all sizes, spinner baits and everthing from plastic grubs to plastic lizards are producing action for bass fishers.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will have a prescribed burn in the north Potholes State Park area, just south of Interstate 90, early next week.

Fish and Wildlife restricted fires on Eastern Washington lands a month ago. They said, "The arrival of hot, dry summer weather has forced Fish and Wildlife to restrict fires and other activities on its eastern Washington lands to reduce the risk of a repeat of last year's costly fire season."

Central-Eastern Washington is enjoying the signs of an earlier spring than the last two years. Ice off was three weeks earlier this year compared to 2012. This past week bank fishing anglers were reporting quality rainbow trout from the southern shores of Potholes Reservoir. Six limits of rainbow's were also reported from the public access known as Blythe Point Boat Launch. One lunker trout 28 inches long was reported from these limits. Frenchman's Waste-way, where it enters Potholes Reservoir has been producing good trout as well. Bank fishers at MarDon Resort are having good action on rainbow up to 4lbs fishing from the shore and off the dock. Canal, Heart, and Windmill Lakes are also producing Trout. The bank fishing trout ammunition has been Berkley power-bait with a night crawler. Larger Rainbows are being caught using cocktail shrimp with a power-bait marshmallow or a brand name "Coon-Shrimp" (Larger Bait Shrimp) with Smelly Jelly.

Surplus fish and wildlife offered to anglers and hunters
A press release arrived in my inbox on Tuesday announcing boat limits are now allowed during the Baker Lake sockeye season. This is a change to the way most fishing is allowed in Washington State.
