MOSES LAKE — This week is National Health Center Week, and the Moses Lake Community Health Center is celebrating.
Regular screening can prevent heart attacks – if you take the time
MOSES LAKE — Heart health is nothing to take lightly. “Over the last 50 years, heart attacks have decreased almost 90% in the United States,” said Dollie Jo Cloud, a nurse at Samaritan Healthcare specializing in cardiac medicine. “(It’s due) to early detection, getting that preventative care.” With the children of the 1970s now nearing or in their 50s, more people are realizing they don’t want to follow in their parents’ footsteps, gritting their teeth and working through health problems until they get too big to ignore, Cloud said. “We can live a longer, healthier life,” she said. “The key is early detection, making sure we’re getting screened for congenital heart disease and heart failure, eating right, exercising and just making sure that we’re doing everything that we can.”

MATTAWA — A new convenience store is scheduled to open in spring 2026 at the west side of the intersection of Government Road and State Route 243 in Mattawa. Owner Hardeep Singh and Port of Mattawa officials recognized the start of the project with a groundbreaking July 30.

DESERT AIRE — One man sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting at the Shell gas station at 5 Desert Aire Drive SW in Desert Aire Saturday around 5:30 p.m. The case is still under investigation.
Adams County Jail remodel could begin early next year
RITZVILLE — Remodeling of the Adams County Jail could begin in spring 2026. Adams County Commissioners authorized county officials to go ahead with a draft design for the project within the existing budget Tuesday. Todd O’Brien, county public works director, said the goal is to determine what can be done with the money and square footage available.
MLSD welcomes two assistant principals
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake School District has announced the appointment of two new assistant principals for the upcoming 2025–26 school year. Annie Hindman has been named assistant principal at Columbia Middle School, while Teri Clark will take on the same role at Frontier Middle School.

Glennda Gaudet, 67, of Ephrata, died on July 2, 2025 in Spokane, Washington, following an extended illness. She was able to spend her final days with her siblings.
Second brush fire ignites in Beaumont, 2 acres burnt
MOSES LAKE – A second brush fire ignited Monday evening along Beaumont Avenue, following a weekend blaze in the same area. The latest fire, which burned approximately 2 acres, was reported at 5 p.m. behind the 1600 block of Beaumont Avenue.

With the help of his wife Krista and his son Jordan, he's created a legacy with Michael’s on the Lake, Michael’s Market and Bistro and Rock Top Burgers & Brew. “I've always known I wanted to own a business,” Mike said.
Moses Lake considering options for fire, EMS services
MOSES LAKE — Options for changing fire and EMS delivery in and around Moses Lake, or whether to keep the existing system, will be the subject of a study commissioned by city officials. The city has issued a request for proposals for a consultant to study three alternatives, and Mayor Dustin Swartz said it’s a sign of growth in Moses Lake and the surrounding area.
Basin athletes compete at Battle on the Columbia
KENNEWICK — On Saturday, students at Freewind Martial Arts Studio traveled to Kennewick for the Battle on the Columbia tournament. According to Brandi Guertin, manager and instructor at Freewind, tournaments like these help gauge progress. “Proud of everybody that showed up and competed,” Brandi said. “Martial arts is an ever-learning, evolving art and when we go to tournaments, we get to see what some of the other arts have to offer in their style of performance, and sometimes we can identify where a tool or a technique might work well with something that we do as well.”
Allison Stanley ready to be a Knight
MOSES LAKE – For Allison Stanley, sports have been a part of her life ever since she could walk, she said. She played every sport one could think of. Even dirt bike racing, but she wound up falling in love with softball, she said. “It was just the competitiveness, and you had to fight for everything. It wasn't just handed to you. You had to win every at-bat, and just that competitive edge that I always got from softball and how I'm always chasing to be better,” Stanley said.

SOAP LAKE — As the current mayor of Soap Lake, Peter Sharp is running to continue as mayor with a vision to keep improving the quality of life for residents and enhancing community infrastructure, he said. Fatality collision closes Road 4 NE in Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE – Road 4 NE was closed near Road F NE in Moses Lake late Monday afternoon due to a two-vehicle collision that resulted in one fatality and one injured, said Kyle Foreman, Public Information Officer for Grant County Sheriff’s Office. The road is closed until further notice as officials investigate and remove vehicles from the scene. More information on the collision will be provided as it becomes available.
