Husky trio named to players to watch list by Big Ten

SEATTLE – On Monday, the Big Ten Conference announced its women's soccer Players to Watch list. Three Husky upperclassmen featured on the preseason list in Kolo Suliafu, Samiah Shell and Laura Cetina, according to a statement by University of Washington athletics. Suliafu enters her senior season well established as not only the anchor of the stingy Husky back line but one of the most feared defensive talents in both the Big Ten and nationally.

Moses Lake middle schools looking for coaches

MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake School District announced they are looking for coaches at Frontier and Endeavor Middle School. Loren Sandhop, the athletic director for the school district, said the most important aspect of a candidate they are looking for is good people. “We're teaching them lifelong lessons, and we're just using sport to do it,” Sandhop said.

Volunteers serve dental patients at free clinic

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church’s annual free dental clinic seems to be making a difference. About 100 people came through each day of the clinic, Meyer said, and about half of those were just there for cleanings.

WA launches online Narcan finder amid rising overdose deaths

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health has unveiled an online tool designed to help residents swiftly locate free naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, including those related to fentanyl. The only place for residents in both Grant and Adams Counties to get free naloxone is the Grant County Health District, 1038 Ivy Ave. in Moses Lake. There are no locations in Adams County.

Gas prices see increases locally, drop nationally

MOSES LAKE – Washington and Grant County both saw slight increases in fuel prices this week. Adams County remained steady and national prices saw slight decreases. “After rising for two straight weeks, the national average price of gasoline saw a slight decline in the last week as oil prices fell below $64 per barrel, paving the way for prices to ease in most states,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Fire burns about 3 acres along Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE — A fire blackened about three acres and required a return visit from Moses Lake Fire Department crews Sunday afternoon. A press release from the city said the fire apparently was caused by an illegal campfire. No one was injured, and no homes were threatened.

Grant County Fair opens today

MOSES LAKE — It was quiet in the swine barn at the Grant County Fairgrounds Monday morning; the pigs were not due to arrive for a few hours. They were running tests on the ice cream machines in the Block 40 booth and volunteers were hanging artwork for display. The Grant County Fair opens Tuesday.

Biscuits, bacon and buckin’ broncs at the Cowboy Breakfast

MOSES LAKE — The chute opened, the rider came out and for eight seconds, the bull and rider flung themselves every which way. But this time, the bull was inflatable and the rider’s age was a single digit. This was the Peewee Stampede Rodeo at the Moses Lake Cowboy Breakfast, the longstanding traditional kickoff to the Grant County Fair. This year’s stick horse rodeo drew about 20 young cowboys and cowgirls.

Invasive animals pose risks to the Basin

MOSES LAKE – The Washington Invasive Species Council has 29 animals and insects listed on their site as priority invasive species that have either found themselves at home in the state or are of concern around the country. The Columbia Basin has become home to a number of these species.

Lady Jacks to hold soccer tryouts

QUINCY – The Quincy High School Lady Jackrabbits soccer team will be holding tryouts Aug. 25 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the high school soccer field. “Looking at the big idea, I just want as many girls to play as much as possible,” said Jacks head coach Jesse Villalobos.
