Joe H. McCullough

Joe McCullough, 76, was born March 31, 1947, to two very loving parents, Mack and Beverly, in Wenatchee, Washington. His beloved Grammy Bert lived with them during Joe’s early years and she was very special to him. That relationship gave Joe a love and respect for older grammy types in his life. Joe’s early years were full of backyard baseball, cars, school, cars, water skiing at Lake Chelan, cars, camping trips, and more cars. He and his dad loved the times they spent together working on their latest project. And Beverly supplied the treats. During his high school years, Joe joined DeMolay, a Masonic youth organization, and he was a very accomplished drummer in various bands.

Knights surge in fourth quarter to win third-straight 1A title

LAKEWOOD – Tied at 14 entering the fourth quarter, the Royal Knights rallied off three-straight touchdown scoring drives to pull away from Mount Baker in Saturday’s 1A state championship game, all of which within eight minutes of each other. “It just started in the off-season, where we had to come together and lift weights and just working together,” Royal quarterback Dylan Allred said of what helped the Knights pull away. “It built a bond that’s hard to break.” Mount Baker scored a late touchdown to cut the lead to 15, but Royal receiver Lance Allred recovered an onside kick attempt to seal Royal’s third-straight state title victory. The win was Royal’s 11th state title in program history. “It’s incredible,” Dylan Allred said. “It’s just been the goal that I’ve been working for, for so long, just every day thinking about it and trying to put in work. To have it finally be accomplished, with my team, my brothers, it’s incredible. Just super thankful.” ...

Fire season outlook grim

Residents urged to use caution when recreating, working outdoors

OLYMPIA — This year’s fire season is upon us, according to Washington State Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz. “Fire activity has increased considerably from earlier spring months,” Franz said in a press conference Friday. “We've seen about 600 fires burn roughly 17,000 acres statewide so far. On lands under Department of Natural Resources protection, we have had more than 330 fires burn just over 1,200 acres. And these numbers obviously are going to increase as the season goes forward. But it's clear that fire season has arrived and we're in it.”...

Mystery photos show Larson AFB in 1950

MOSES LAKE — The photo shows a trio of Air Force pilots walking from fighter jets with the kind of swagger expected from men who fly very expensive, very fast machines through the air, frequently with guns blazing. Almost nothing is known about the photo, though. Not the names of the pilots, not the photographer, not even when or why the photo was taken, though it was likely sometime in the summer of 1950. All that’s known – from the unit patch on sleeves and flight suits and painted on the sides of F-86 Sabre fighter jets – is that they were of the 71st Fighter Squadron, showed some kind of special event and were taken at Larson Air Force Base. And that they were found in Southern California last year.
