Ephrata’s Malone takes top honor in chess tourney

EPHRATA – For the third consecutive year, Hayden Malone, an Ephrata High School senior took home the top prize in the Waypoint Foundation Scholastic Chess Tournament, according to a statement from the Waypoint Foundation. The competition was held Saturday at Parkway Intermediate School in Ephrata.

Grant PUD rates to go up 3%

EPHRATA — Grant County PUD customers will see an increase in their electrical rates beginning April 1. Utility district commissioners approved an overall 3% rate increase, averaged across all rate classes, on a 3-1-1 vote Jan. 23.

Whooping cough infections rise in Grant Co.

GRANT COUNTY – The Grant County Health District is responding to a concerning spike in whooping cough, also known as pertussis, cases, with 28 infections confirmed since June, according to an Aug. 21 press release. This outbreak, largely linked to several Slavic churches in Moses Lake and Soap Lake, raises alarm as 22 of the identified cases were traced to these communities.

Treehouse seeks support for foster youth going back to school

MOSES LAKE — Treehouse, a Washington state nonprofit dedicated to supporting the educational and other essential needs of youth in foster care, is launching its annual back-to-school campaign to collect school supplies and items by the end of summer, according to an announcement from the organization. Treehouse is calling on community members, businesses and organizations to support youth in foster care during the back-to-school season by hosting donation drives and/or organizing fundraisers now. This initiative aims to ensure that every child in foster care has the necessary resources to succeed academically and beyond.

For many years Moses Lake Kiwanis has sponsored youth service clubs. Due to the failure of the 2024 Moses Lake school levy, two of those clubs have folded this year; one has yet to meet and the other two are struggling. This is just one example of many, many, many negative ramifications of that school levy failure.

RITZVILLE — A race for an open seat on the Othello City Council may be headed for a mandatory recount and a former member of the Ritzville City Council will take over the mayor’s job. The 2023 general election was certified Tuesday.

Othello drug dealer sentenced

SPOKANE – Jaime Alberta Garza, 52, of Othello has been sentenced after pleading guilty to possession with the intent to distributed fentanyl. United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice imposed a sentence of 78 months – about six and a half years – in prison to be followed by 5 years of supervised release, according to a press release from the office of Vanessa Waldref, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.
