Basin events calendar for May 2025
COLUMBIA BASIN — May is here, and the Basin is making the transition from spring to summer. Here are a few of the things that are happening this month.
MLSD hosting community forum to introduce finalists for leadership role
MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake School District is inviting families, staff and community members to actively participate in a forum to introduce finalists for the executive director of safety and wellbeing tonight, as the district seeks to enhance its educational and safety framework

Cody Joe Spicer was born on August 19, 1985, to Lisa McCurty and Bill Spicer in Moses Lake, Washington. He had one sibling, his little sister, Katrina Ball.
Substance abuse resources highlighted at town hall
MOSES LAKE – The Moses Lake Community Coalition held a town hall to discuss addiction and resources in the Moses Lake community. The meeting titled “The Us in Them: The line between us and them is thinner than you think” had a panel of six speakers from a variety of backgrounds. The Columbia Basin Herald published a story Monday about the personal experiences of the participants.
Moses Lake Farmers Market to open Saturday
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Farmers Market will open Saturday for the season in high style, with live music, entertainment, a raffle, a scavenger hunt and a ribbon-tying ceremony with Moses Lake Mayor Dustin Swartz to symbolize the community coming together at the market. The event is in keeping with the theme of the market this year, according to an announcement from the Market Manager Christine Haguewood. “This year’s theme, ‘Tied Together by Community,’ highlights the power of local connections – bringing together farmers, artisans and neighbors for a fresh, meaningful start to the season,” Haguewood wrote. The Moses Lake Farmers Market was established in 1978 and takes place every Saturday from the beginning of May through the end of October at McCosh Park. The number of vendors varies, but this year’s market will kick off with more than 50, Haguewood wrote in her statement.

Columbia Basin Allied Arts fundraiser takes on a yacht rock theme May 3
MOSES LAKE — Get out the boat shoes and sailing togs and get ready to cruise in a good cause at the Columbia Basin Allied Arts annual fundraiser auction May 3. The theme is “Make Waves for the Arts,” and the background will be yacht rock music, said Shawn Cardwell, CBAA executive director.
One dead, another injured in one-vehicle crash
MARLIN – A 33-year-old man from Moses Lake, Don “Chris” Terrell, was killed in a one-vehicle accident early Friday morning near Marlin, according to Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

MOSES LAKE — A former Moses Lake man was recently honored with a knighthood in Finland. Collin Hansen, a 1975 graduate of Moses Lake High School, was awarded the Order of the Lion of Finland at a ceremony March 18.

Ephrata’s Downer recognized for excellence
EPHRATA — Hannah Downer, an 18-year-old senior at Ephrata High School, has been selected as one of the Students of the Month for March in recognition of her academic performance, leadership roles in extracurricular activities and positive influence on her peers. “I like being nominated for stuff and being recognized,” Downer said.

WARDEN – Warden High School’s Anthony Gutierrez has signed his letter of intent to play baseball and pursue a major in Agriculture Business Management with Olympic College in Bremerton. “It reminded me a lot of Warden,” said Anthony. “It was for sure, I knew this was going to be the spot as soon as I got the offer.”
Renew director brings back ideas from prestigious fellowship
MOSES LAKE — Behavioral health care in Grant County may see some improvements. Dell Anderson, director of Renew, formerly Grant Mental Health, recently completed a Baldridge Fellowship and came back with some ideas, he said Thursday.
