Soap Lake shuts down personal fireworks
SOAP LAKE — The City of Soap Lake issued a press release on June 6 stating that the use of fireworks would be drastically reduced this year. “With the large crowds and vendors gathering for the Suds-N-Sun event planned this July 2 and 3, there is an increased danger to the public from accidents created by the personal use of fireworks,” the release stated. “Therefore, personal fireworks will not be allowed in the city from 5 p.m. July 1 through noon on the Fourth this year.”...

COLUMBIA BASIN — Independence Day is next Tuesday and residents can expect a lot of booms, bangs and whistles, but in a dry climate like this, fireworks get out of hand easily and set off wildfires, said Grant County Fire District 7 Chief Chris Baker. “We have warmer, drier conditions that are going to be affecting the area,” Baker said. “In our jurisdiction, especially the north portion, we haven't had a whole lot of fires in recent years, so we have a lot of light, flashy fuels that are of concern. And of course, the increase in vacationers in the area means that there's a potential for even more issues. If we do have a fire that means evacuations, potential for people to get trapped, things like that.” ...

16-year-old injured by firework
MOSES LAKE — A 16-year-old was injured by a presumed aerial firework on March Avenue and Loring Drive in the Larson community early Sunday morning, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office. “Fireworks are only permitted to be sold and purchased and ignited for certain periods of time around the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve in Grant County,” GCSO Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman said. “It's illegal to discharge, sell or purchase fireworks right now.”
