VERMILLION, S. Dakota — The fourth quarter is where the excitement is for Eastern Washington women's basketball as they complete another comeback. Eastern defeated South Dakota 67-63 on Saturday afternoon to go 2-0 in the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season, while USD falls to 8-2.

Public opinion sought on Grant PUD rate proposals

EPHRATA — Grant County PUD customers are invited to give their opinions about electrical rates for 2026 and beyond at a public hearing at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the PUD’s main office, 30 C St. SW, Ephrata. It’s the start of a two-week public comment period on the new rate proposal.

Broncos win in competitive game against the Cougars

WARDEN — The Warden Cougars (0-3) fell to the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna Broncos (1-1) 58-45 Saturday. Despite the loss, Head Coach Emily Cox said this game showed how far they’ve come in the last year. “I thought the girls overall did really well,” Cox said. “They came to play, they worked hard and really were trying to clean up and do our fundamentals better. I felt like (in) this game they did better.” The Cougars started strong in the first quarter by taking a 13-9 lead. However, the Broncos responded in the second to go into halftime with a 29-25 lead over Warden. In the second half, the Cougars hung close with LRS but ultimately the game escaped them in the fourth quarter and the Broncos took the win.

Tentative agreement reached in Moses Lake school strike

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake School District personnel will return to the classroom Monday following the negotiation of a tentative agreement between the district and the Moses Lake Education Association that ends a week-long strike. In a statement signed jointly by the MLEA and MLSD, both sides said they were satisfied with the outcome.

Adams County Jail remodel to start in spring 2026

RITZVILLE — Remodeling of the Adams County Jail is projected to begin in May 2026, with the project completed by the end of next year. Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner said the project will put the county closer to reopening the jail. “We’re going to get a safer, more functional facility, updated to a standard we can manage safer and easier,” Wagner said. “It’ll allow for a lot of different things – easier access for the jail staff and inmate safety, (and) ability to allow more space to our dispatch area, which has been a major fire concern for several years. We’re making it a safer and better functioning environment.” Demolition is projected to begin in April. The jail was closed in 2022 following an inmate’s attack on another inmate and a corrections officer that left both severely injured. It’s been closed since. Wagner cautioned that even with the remodeling, additional staffing will be necessary.

Young Huskies team falls in first two matchups

OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies girls basketball team fell short in their first two matchups of the season, losing 33-50 on the road Tuesday against Omak and 32-46 at home against Connell. Despite this, the young Huskies team is still optimistic. “Things didn’t go too bad, but they could’ve gone a lot better,” said Huskies sophomore Khloe Valdez. “Could have connected a little bit better as a team and talked some more.” Following a tough loss against Omak, the Huskies returned home on Thursday to play the Connell Eagles in another nonleague matchup. In the first quarter, the Eagles scored eight unanswered points before the Huskies put up four by the end of the quarter.

From overtime thriller to championship stage

The Knights meet Cashmere once again

ROYAL CITY — On Friday, the No. 1 seed Royal Knights (12-0) will travel to Husky Stadium to play the No. 2 seed Cashmere Bulldogs (11-1) in the 1A state championship game. The Knights Head Coach Wiley Allred was not surprised to see the Bulldogs reach the state championship game. “I was hoping there wasn't a team better than them, because that's a pretty tough team right there. We'll meet our match,” Allred said. When these two met in October, it was the Knights pulling off a late comeback to win 21-15 in overtime. Coming into that game, both teams were undefeated. The Knights had only allowed seven points all season, while the Bulldogs had not allowed a score by any team.

Lions open the season 2-0

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School Lions got off to a strong start to their season taking two home games against Touchet and Entiat on Tuesday and Wednesday to start their season 2-0. “I think it went good, I think we got a little jumbled during the (second) game, but I think it was it was a good game for us to start off,” said Lions senior Brynlynn King. The Lions dominated in their season opener against Touchet on Tuesday, holding their opponent to five points total and preventing a single score in both the second and third quarters. The MLCA/CCS offense and defense were on full display in this game as they won 59-5.
