Soap Lake sees two fires Thursday evening

Both may be associated with prior arson investigation

SOAP LAKE - Two fires broke out Thursday evening in Soap Lake. “Both are definitely suspicious,” Grant County Fire District 7 Chief Kirk Sheppard said. The first fire broke out at about 8:40 p.m. in the 21000 block of Road A-Northeast. According to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the fire burned about 10 acres and was responded to by Grant County Fire Districts 7 and 13 and City of Ephrata Fire. There were no evacuations issued and the fire was contained by 9:30 p.m. The second fire broke out at 9:15 p.m. in the field in between State Route 28 and Sixth Ave. SE; the same area as two previous fires from Monday and Friday...

Mattawa Council approves proposed contract with police union

MATTAWA — After a negotiation process that went to mediation, the Mattawa City Council voted May 15 to approve a new three-year contract with the union representing Mattawa Police Department officers. The vote was 4-2, with council members Tony Acosta and Fabiola Hernandez voting no. City Attorney Kathryn Kenison said it was a challenging process. “We didn’t think we were going to get there, but we asked the mediator to work with us a little longer and this is what the parties compromised on,” Kenison said. “The open items were mostly the financials.”

Ronald Roger Kissler of Quincy, Wash. passed away on June, 27 2016. Ron was born in Toppenish, Wash. on June 24, 1945 to Ben and Dorthy Kissler. He moved to Quincy at the age of 7 where he attended school and later graduated. After high school Ron was drafted to Vietnam where he served from 1965-1967. After returning home he served as a reserve for several years. Ron would later go on to establish his own construction business in Quincy, Wash. He is survived by daughter Ronda Eubanks, son Dustin Kissler, sister Sharon Kirkpatrick, and sister Dianna Keppler.
